The wandering merchant seemed pleased by the transactions even though Xander couldn't help but wonder why an entity roaming the veiled realm would require coins and shards. It wasn't like the merchant was human. And there weren't any shops or markets in the Nightscape.
After hesitating for a while, Xander finally asked, "What do you do with these shards and coins? Why do you need them?"
"I need them to acquire new wares," the merchant replied. "I exist only to sell my services to those in dire need, and the payment I accept helps me expand my inventory."
"And where exactly do you purchase these items from? I haven't seen any shops around here."
The merchant wasn't normally used to answering such questions about his trade, but since he was pleased with Xander's purchases, he decided to humor him.
