Chapter 15 - Aye aye Captain!

October 4, 2019.

How is it that even public security cameras aren't able to spot him anywhere in the city!?

Or maybe it's because he's so strangely dressed every time he steps out of his base that nobody's able to recognize him.

The bastard travels without his guards as if he's sure that he could take on a whole liege of guards on his own.

I could take him on, but it's always best to prepare before facing your enemy. Who knows? He might have stuff up his sleeve that I don't know about currently like the snake he is.

I will kill him.

Nothing's gonna change that.

BEEP!

Haven rolled over, a groan escaping her lips as she stretched out her hand, heavy with sleep, to grasp for her phone, buried somewhere amidst the tangle of sheets. With bleary eyes and a disheveled mane of tousled hair, she fumbled for what felt like an eternity until, on the fourth or fifth try, her hand finally met the cool surface of the screen, sending a shiver up her arm.

Parting her heavy eyelids, she let out a low curse, a mix of annoyance and curiosity, directed at whoever had the audacity to disturb her in the early hours of the morning.

Or maybe not as early, she thought glancing up at the tiny 09:17 flashing up on the glass screen.

"What's wrong?"

"Let me guess. You stayed up the whole night like the owl you are and woke up late as usual. Yes or yes?"

"Shut up you bald chicken!"

Gavin laughed out, his cheerful chuckle arousing her enough to sit up, reminding her once again how that bastard Zei's laugh had affected her entire existence.

'Of course, he had to ruin my mood the second I opened my eyes. Of-Fucking-Course!'

Recalling that she was supposed to despise that murderer's very being, she got up and stretched a little before walking toward the small window to get a view of the outside world.

"Apologies for disturbing your morning, Sleeping Beauty." he openly mocked. "But good news needs to be relayed as quickly as possible."

Haven carefully parted the sheer curtain aside, feeling a rush of anticipation as she peered through the opening. As the fabric slid across the curtain rod, revealing a sliver of the outside world, she couldn't help but hold her breath in suspense. To her immense relief, the scene before her eyes unfolded like a beautiful tableau—a vast expanse of clouds stretched across the sky, casting a soft, diffused light that bathed everything in a gentle, ethereal glow.

The cloudy canopy shielded the world beneath from the scorching rays of the sun, offering respite and tranquility. Haven let out a deep sigh of relief, grateful that she wouldn't have to endure the searing heat and instead could revel in the cool and soothing ambiance painted by the cloudy sky.

"Now let ME guess. They shifted the test a few days early, didn't they?"

"Bingo!" she heard the faint snap of his two fingers in the background and smiled. Some things never really change huh?

"They shifted it to tomorrow as Victor was kind enough to inform me. You don't know much about this body though, are you sure this is a good idea?" Gavin asked, worry extensively audible in his soft voice.

Haven pulled open the closet doors with her free hand and hurriedly took out a pair of casual outwear for the day. "Don't worry, I'll manage. Might even test this body out a little by spending the whole day in the gym after my shift." she briefly tried to explain as well as assure.

From the very day their plan had formed, she'd started to make a few trips to the gym across the street. This body wasn't in too bad of a condition but still needed some practicing and finesse.

"You're going to the coffee shop today?" he questioned in confusion. "I thought you were gonna join again or maybe quit but after the test."

"Well, if Zei—" Haven internally cursed herself and him in her head. "I mean if Wei does decide to send his men after me then I can't let him spot me anywhere near the headquarters. Best to take precautionary measures and pretend I'm just a normal girl trying to act strong after my boyfriend broke my poor heart."

Gavin cleared his throat. "I was against that idea from the start."

Haven shook her head, smiling slightly. "I need as much data as possible on Wei's lackeys by midnight okay?"

"Aye Aye Captain!"

After bidding him goodbye for the present, she hung up and hurriedly started dressing up for the day. Taking a quick shower, Haven exited the apartment after carefully making sure that the door was locked and programmed safely enough to not let any intruder in.

As soon as her bike hit the road, it didn't take more than a minute for her senses to kick in and realize something was incredibly wrong. Glancing in the side mirrors her fears were confirmed true as two bikers came into her view, dressed fully in black and following her from behind at a safe distance.

She had expected him to send his spies to monitor her movements until he figured out what to do with her. The prime worry in his mind must be that he was doomed if she ended up in the wrong hands and they ended up using her to control and destroy him.

Neither she nor Gavin could figure out why he was suddenly obeying her every command a few nights ago at the club. Did she hypnotize him? Quite literally impossible since Haven didn't even know how to do that.

Her bike stopped as soon as it reached its destination. While parking it behind the coffee shop, she could see the two bikes halt at a safe distance from the corner of her eye. They seemed professionally trained but not smart enough to follow her without making her aware of it.

'The next time we meet, I could advise him to train his minions better!'
