Chapter 22 - Birth of Devil

"What... what just happened?"Blaze Emberheart coughed, struggling to catch his breath amidst the dust and debris of the fallen city wall

Hearing his question, Frost remained silent, her eyes fixed on the approaching wolves.

"They said the wall would crumble down once they gave us the signal, didn't they?" he asked another question.

Frost continued to ignore him, preoccupied with her thoughts and contemplating her next course of action.

'They definitely wanted to kill as many people in White Lotus City as possible, judging by everything they did.'

'Well, regardless of what happens, I'll have to escape the city.'

Despite her decision to flee the city, she couldn't resist waiting to see how things unfolded, hoping to take advantage of any favorable opportunities that might arise.

She and Blaze hid among the wreckage of the city wall to avoid fighting the wolves and to conserve their energy. As cultivators, they had the skill to hide from the wolves, which were just normal animals and not magical beasts.

From their hiding spot, they watched everything unfold. They saw the city lord initially use a secret technique to protect the citizens, but he suddenly disappeared after a while. Then, the wolves started attacking and killing the innocent people of the city.

Frost remained calm and unaffected, as cold as ice, while Blaze tried several times to go and save the people but was stopped by Frost.

Just as Frost was about to leave the city, considering it had been overwhelmed and defeated, an eerie silence suddenly fell upon the surroundings.

The once chaotic noise ceased, and an unsettling calm settled in.

Startled, Frost scanned her surroundings, only to find that all the wolves had frozen in their tracks, their eyes fixated on a distant point in the depths of the forest.

Sensing their alertness, Frost turned her gaze in the same direction, a rush of blood pulsating through her body.

In the distance, she noticed a gust of wind beginning to rise, carrying an icy chill that sent shivers down her spine.

The bright morning sun, once radiating warmth and light, now seemed to cower in fear, as an encroaching darkness cast a gloom over the city and the surrounding landscape.

The temperature plummeted, turning the air frigid and causing Frost's breath to materialize in front of her.

"What... what is going on?" Blaze's voice trembled with trepidation, but Frost had little time to consider it.

The wind continued to grow in intensity, whipping through the air with increasing ferocity.

Her instincts urged her to flee, to escape the looming threat, but before she could take a step, a cataclysmic event unfolded before her eyes.

Reality itself seemed to rupture as a rift tore through the fabric of space. It was as if time itself had been severed, and in an instant, an entire field beyond the city walls, spanning a radius of about one mile, vanished from existence.

There were no remnants of the once dense forest, no trace of the wolves that had stood frozen, not even the familiar surroundings of space and time.

In its place stood a solitary figure—a man with jet-black hair, intricately styled to resemble flickering flames, which danced ominously atop his head.

He was draped in an ensemble befitting a creature of the underworld, his dark attire flowing around him like ethereal shadows.

The fabric seemed to possess an otherworldly quality, as if woven from the essence of night itself, exuding an unsettling allure that drew the eye.

Yet, it was the man's countenance that truly seized one's attention. His unnaturally pale complexion seemed to glow with an otherworldly pallor, accentuating the stark contrast of his penetrating black eyes.

Those abyssal orbs held an unfathomable depth, resembling endless voids that sucked in the light, leaving only an eerie emptiness behind.

They glimmered with a malevolence that sent a chill racing down the spines of anyone unfortunate enough to meet his gaze, as if they held the secrets of countless unspeakable horrors.

Frost's shock reached new heights as she witnessed the man vanish from his original position and reappear directly above the city.

Extending his hand, he exerted an otherworldly power over the wolves that had previously stood frozen in place.

They were lifted into the air, suspended by an unseen force, and then sent hurtling back down to the ground with astonishing speed.

The wolves descended with a relentless velocity, their impact transforming them into crimson stains upon the earth.

The spectacle mirrored the earlier destruction caused by the rocks crashing into the city, but this time, there was a marked difference in the onlookers' expressions. No longer filled with fear or despair, their eyes held a mixture of reverence and respect for the enigmatic figure.

Frost's mind raced as she realized the identity of the being before her—a Nascent Soul cultivator.

Without a moment's hesitation, she made a fateful decision. She swiftly drew upon her instincts, eliminating any doubts that may have lingered. In an act of ruthless determination, she silenced Blaze by killing him, for she knew that her survival depended on her immediate action.

Whoever that senior was he had definitely saved the city and if he knew of her involvement in its calamity the result could be guessed.

With her heart pounding in her chest, Frost turned on her heel and sprinted away from the city, her footsteps echoing the urgency that burned within her.

The scenes of destruction and devastation blurred past her as she fled, her mind consumed by the enormity of the encounter.

Fear and awe mingled within her, fueling her determination to escape the clutches of a force she had never fathomed possible.

....

"Shit, did I use too much energy?" Lucifer thought as he looked at the dying wolves.

Just as he had intended, he had utilized his devil evolution to launch a ferocious assault, effectively eliminating the wolves that encroached beyond the city walls. However, without giving it much thought, he had further exerted his telekinetic prowess to eradicate the remaining creatures within the city limits.

He just hoped that he had acquired enough energy capacity to withstand the extensive energy usage.

About to access his status screen, he abruptly halted as his attention was drawn to a gathering crowd below. Some individuals had even dropped to their knees in reverence.

The realization dawned upon him that he had become visible to them, leaving him uncertain of his next course of action. With a mind grappling with indecision, he decided to go to Emily first.
