Bones?
After hearing this answer, Sato Miwako, Takagi, and the others all exchanged puzzled looks.
Officer Tome, as the most experienced in the forensics, was the first to react, "Yes! It's bones!
If the bullets were made from bones, at the moment of impact when they enter the body, they would be shattered into powder due to the immense kinetic energy, mixing with the damaged bones of the deceased.
At the time, during the autopsy, we only checked for any foreign objects inside the body, but we unconsciously excluded bones as it is a part of the body."
"I'll immediately conduct a DNA test on the bones inside the deceased!" Officer Tome said and didn't wait for anyone, he went straight to the door and ran out.
"The murder weapon has been found. So what do we do now?" Seeing that the mystery of the disappearing bullets had been solved, Sato Miwako and the others regained their spirits and awaited Senichi's next instructions.
"Investigate the purchasing records of Kimura Saionji from both the past and recent times, see if he has bought any machines capable of achieving the same effect!"
Without hesitation, Senichi continued, "And Chiba, I need you to get the search warrant. Although this firearm modification technique seems simple once exposed, it's not something an ordinary person would think of.
Our focus should still be on Kimura Saionji. Once the search warrant is granted, we'll go to Kimura's house and compare the machines there."
The investigation proceeded at lightning speed. When faced with the full force of a government in action, the power that erupted was undoubtedly terrifying.
The application for the search warrant was approved almost instantly. Subsequently, the investigation into Kimura Saionji proceeded smoothly under the massive manpower deployed.
Because it was also used as a business workshop, the door to Kimura Saionji's home was unlocked. After knocking on the door, they entered upon hearing his "please come in."
"Welcome, what can I help you with..."
But when he saw Senichi and Takagi's figures, his words came to an abrupt halt. He then looked at the two with some resignation and said impatiently, "Officers, is there something else you need?"
He didn't pay attention to their reactions and went straight back to the machine to start working. "I have a deadline to meet tomorrow, so please don't disrupt my work."
"If you cooperate with us, we won't disrupt your work either."
Senichi looked around at the machines and smiled, "But it seems you've already disrupted our work, so I'm sorry, but we have to disturb you as well."
After saying that, Senichi waved his hand towards the door, and several detectives wearing white gloves entered the room and began searching. Without waiting for Kimura Saionji to get angry, Takagi had already placed the search warrant in front of him.
"You..." Kimura Saionji saw the document in front of him, pointed at Senichi in anger, but couldn't find the words to speak.
"No need to get so angry, I believe you know what you've done."
Senichi took out a list of purchases from his suit pocket, "Have you bought an air compressor recently? We didn't see any new machines like that when we visited before."
"I... I did..."
Kimura Saionji's voice was hoarse and filled with deep resentment. "I promised not to get involved again, but my daughter's death ignited my thirst for revenge... To be honest, after avenging her, I planned to leave this world with my family... There's nothing left for me here."
Senichi could see that the man before him was telling the truth, and he truly had a death wish. The eyes revealed numbness, pain, and no attachment to the world.
"So, where is the machine now?" After hearing the report that the newly purchased machine from the list was not found in the house, Takagi looked at Kimura and asked.
"It was stolen by someone else..."
Kimura Saionji weakly waved his hand and said, "I know you might not believe me, but that's the truth. After I finished it, the machine was stolen..."
"Bullets?" Senichi asked, "Were you planning to manufacture bullets using animal bones?"
"Yes..."
Kimura Saionji sat on the floor and smiled indifferently, "So, that night after I finished making them, I was ready to take revenge the next morning.
But who would have thought that detectives would show up at my door in the middle of the night, saying that Chief Superintendent Itou had been murdered...
Now, even my revenge has been assisted by someone else. All that's left is taking care of my wife, and then I can leave this world without any attachment."
Looking at Kimura Saionji, who sat on the ground like a lifeless shell, Senichi didn't have time to console him again. Instead, he turned and quickly left the room.
"What should we do? Kimura Saionji says the gun he was making got stolen, and we haven't found any evidence. Plus, when Makoto Itou was killed, he had an alibi..."
Following Senichi out of the room, Takagi asked in frustration, "The leads are cut off again."
"Let's go to Sawayoshi's house," Senichi said as he quickened his pace, "If I'm not mistaken, Sawayoshi is the one who stole it."
"Sawayoshi? The boy from the bento shop?" Officer Takagi questioned with surprise, "Are you saying Sawayoshi is the one who stole the gun that Kimura made?"
"Yes, there's a good chance," Senichi squinted as he looked toward the nearby bento shop.
First, Sawayoshi had an admiration for Sekai Saionji and was even reluctant to believe her death. He insisted on delivering an extra meal every day.
Second, Sawayoshi delivered meals to Kimura Saionji daily, and Kimura didn't suspect him. Seeing the machines Kimura Saionji was modifying was not impossible.
Almost all three meals a day were delivered by Sawayoshi, giving him plenty of opportunities to steal the machine.
Moreover, the perpetrator had a convenient cover: he was the son of the bento shop!
Bento shops typically offered delivery services, and the bento delivery vehicle was one of the least attention-grabbing vehicles wherever it went.
Sawayoshi likely committed the crime while driving bentos in a delivery vehicle, which would also conveniently resolve the issue of transporting the heavy machine.
As for whether it was a joint crime with someone else, the likelihood of that seemed low.
After listening to Kimura Saionji's words, Senichi understood that he probably intended to seek revenge on his own.
He had nothing to lose, and with a death wish, there was nothing much to fear.
Even if Sawayoshi proposed to seek revenge together, he would likely decline.
Because being willing to collaborate for revenge would mean that the other person also had deep feelings for their daughter.
He would firmly refuse to let an innocent person, who was suffering from the loss of his daughter, fall into the abyss with him.
So, in this case, it is likely that Sawayoshi acted alone!
