Murderous intent.
The words of Kimura Saionji held an undisguised intent to kill and satisfaction.
Chiba, who was beside them, became infuriated upon hearing his "arrogant" words and was about to stand up and start a heated argument. However, Senichi immediately intervened and stopped him.
"I understand. It was my oversight," Senichi nodded, indicating an apology.
Kimura Saionji also nodded but remained silent, and the atmosphere became tense.
*Knock, knock, knock!*
Accompanied by a series of knocking sounds, a young man's voice rang out, "Excuse me, Uncle, your breakfast bento has arrived."
"Thank you for delivering it every day; it's a real help," Kimura Saionji got up, smiled at the boy, and accepted the two lunchboxes. "I really appreciate it."
The young man peeked inside and coincidentally made eye contact with Senichi, who was looking toward the door. They exchanged polite smiles and nodded in greeting.
After receiving the two breakfasts, Kimura Saionji entered the adjacent bedroom and soon emerged carrying one of the breakfasts. After that, he seemed to lose interest in continuing the conversation and bluntly said he wanted to eat, requesting the two to leave.
Senichi didn't press further and, after taking Chiba with him, got into the car. Without starting the engine, he immediately made a phone call to have information about Kimura Saionji's daughter's suicide sent from the Metropolitan Police Department.
According to the local police records, Sekai Saionji's shoes and cellphone were placed in the middle of the suspension bridge with his suicide note.
The suicide note was addressed to her mother with just the words "I'm sorry".
However, the body had not been recovered. Underneath the suspension bridge was a turbulent river with numerous large submerged rocks.
In previous years, even if those who attempted suicide by jumping into the river were lucky enough not to die from fall, they often got swept away by the strong currents or collided with submerged large rocks that appeared to be just beneath the water's surface, leading to their deaths.
Due to the dangerously turbulent nature of the river, which also connected to the sea, many suicide victims' bodies were never recovered. This was a choice made by those who didn't want their bodies to be found. This personality trait of not wanting to trouble others persisted until their deaths and had become a kind of pathological behavior.
"It's truly unfortunate. While I have a lot of respect for Chief Superintendent Itou, I think he went too far in this matter. After all, the child is innocent," Chiba couldn't help but sigh.
"Well... if the son marries the daughter of a former extremist, it could potentially become an issue for the entire police department," Senichi shook his head, indicating that the situation wasn't as simple as Chiba thought. "Although I don't approve of this approach, I can understand it. But it's clear that Chief Superintendent Itou didn't want things to escalate to this point."
"So, what should we do now?" Chiba asked. "Should we go to Makoto Itou's place? He should be dealing with Chief Superintendent Itou's funeral arrangements along with his mother."
Before Senichi could respond, their phones rang, one after the other.
"Officer Takagi?"
"Officer Sato?"
Hearing the voices on the other end of the line, they exchanged a glance, both feeling a sense of unease. They were aware of Sato and Takagi's whereabouts, and the fact that they were both calling at the same time indicated that the news was likely very important.
It wasn't a coincidence, it was bad news.
Makoto Ito had died.
Just as they were inside discussing matters with the monk who had come to perform last rites, Makoto was shot in the heart and killed. Upon seeing her son's lifeless body, Mrs. Ito immediately fainted and was currently in the hospital.
Upon hearing this news, Senichi and Chiba immediately left the car and rushed to the front door of Kizuki Saizou's house, knocking urgently.
"I'm so annoyed! Stop!"
Kimura Saionji's impatient voice rang out, and as soon as he saw the two people standing at the door, he expressed his irritation. "So annoying, why haven't you left?"
"At home..." Chiba's voice was dry. "So, does this mean there's really another suspect?"
"Moreover, we are the ones who provided the alibi," Senichi looked at Kimura Saionji and said, "Congratulations, your suspicion has been cleared. Just a moment ago, Makoto Ito was killed."
"Haha..." Kimura Saionji seemed almost incredulous when he heard this news. "Dead... Dead? Hahaha!!! He's dead!!!"
Tears flowed involuntarily from his eyes, and Kimura Saionji burst into laughter and cries of his daughter's name could be heard from inside the house.
Senichi and Chiba could only exchange a wry smile.
They had been investigating the death of Sekai Saionji just now, so their line of sight hadn't immediately turned towards the door.
Upon receiving the news of Makoto Itou's death, they immediately knocked on the door. Kimura Saionji had responded and opened the door promptly.
The distance between Kimura Saionji's house and the Itou residence was at least half an hour's drive. Even if there were alternative exits, it would be impossible for him to teleport there.
In other words, Kimura Saionji's suspicion had been cleared. He was not the one who had committed the murder.
After confirming this, Senichi immediately started the car and used the siren to make their way to the Itou residence.
Currently, Makoto Itou's body remained in place, having not been moved. After passing through the police cordon, Senichi immediately activated his super-smell.
Unfortunately, even though this crime scene had occurred just moments ago, there was still no trace of gunpowder residue in the air.
At the same time, there were no unusual items in the vicinity. They had almost conducted a house-to-house investigation, hoping to find any witnesses who might have seen something suspicious or any unusual individuals or vehicles at the scene when Makoto Itou was killed.
But unfortunately, they had found nothing.
"Damn it... how did the murderer kill them?" Officer Megure muttered, his voice filled with anger. "This is already the third victim... and they even did it right in front of us..."
The deaths of Chief Superintendent Itou and the journalist confirmed that the case was related to Sekai Saionji's death.
So, as the source of this tragedy, Makoto Itou was naturally one of the key protected targets.
But who could have expected that the killer would brazenly murder Makoto Itou right before their eyes?
Even Senichi furrowed his brow. This killer was proving to be a formidable adversary. Their actions were ruthless and decisive, making them the most straightforward and efficient killer he had encountered in numerous cases.
Killing two people directly on the same night and then, despite knowing that there were people protecting the victim, showing no fear of exposure and killing him in cold blood—this audacious and ruthless style of the killer was truly perplexing.
