Upon hearing this news from Aramaki, Senichi raised an eyebrow in surprise.
This news was a pleasant surprise. He hadn't expected that after so many years, Aramaki would still have retained evidence.
Then... Senichi promptly made the decision to call the police.
Emmmmm...
After all, this was Izu, and Senichi, a Tokyo Police detective, couldn't simply interfere in cases here, even if it was one he was personally involved in and had already identified the culprit.
Otherwise, he could easily be seen as provoking the local police department.
So, in the midst of Aramaki's confusion, he was taken away by the local police detectives.
Based on the evidence provided by Senichi, the Izu County Police Department easily obtained a search warrant and conducted a search of Aramaki's warehouse.
Ultimately, they found the ship involved in the accident. On the ship, they even discovered traces of blood. Combining the descriptions in Aramaki's videos with the fingerprints and some bloodstains of the victims - Noboru's father and the others, found on the ship, it all pointed to a grim reality.
As it turned out, after Aramaki destroyed Noboru's father's ship, the three of them decided to abandon their sinking vessel and attempted to seize Aramaki's boat to save themselves.
However, Aramaki had the advantage, coupled with the harsh conditions of the storm, and only Yuta's father managed to barely get on board. He was, however, beaten by Aramaki and thrown into the sea.
But traces of blood were left on the ship at that time. Currently, forensic scientists are conducting examinations, and results are expected soon.
It's as if fate had its own plans, and now Aramaki couldn't escape.
Originally, Senichi had only wanted to record him with the "Lie-Detection Needle," even if Aramaki were to deny everything afterward. Senichi just needed to use the media to create public awareness and draw the attention of the police.
With this newfound hope of a different outcome, those three, whoever among them had thoughts of revenge, would likely hold off on seeking vengeance when they saw another path to justice.
The videos recorded during the drinking sessions might not serve as legal evidence due to the nature of intoxicated speech, but even if they can't be used in a legal context, it doesn't matter. Senichi had intended to leverage the media to amplify the impact of this incident throughout society and publicly expose Aramaki.
Even if Aramaki can't be legally punished, he will face a far more terrifying consequence — social death.
You might be familiar with this term, but it doesn't carry a profound meaning for everyone. However, in Japanese society, the power of this term is truly horrifying.
In Japan, there's a saying that goes, "Better to die in the street than to suffer 'social death' from isolation by others."
It's evident that this phrase carries an incredibly chilling connotation.
In many works, individuals who are considered "outcasts" due to their introverted personality or being newcomers are bullied in school, let alone being considered murderers in society, they face widespread bullying.
Moreover, it's not limited to online attacks or public criticism; even your daily life will be marked by others' disdain and harassment.
You'll instantly lose your job, everyone will refuse to do business with you, you'll be denied service when you try to buy things, and even your home may be pelted with rotten eggs and vandalized with words like "murderer" sprayed on the walls.
Of course, Senichi has no sympathy for Aramaki; he made this choice knowing the consequences.
Since the law cannot judge him, Senichi intends to let society know about this incident and let society as a whole make a judgment.
Seeing the miserable fate that awaits Aramaki, when the three potential suspects who want revenge witness this, Senichi believes they will accept this reality after a warning from him.
However, this was a punitive measure of last resort when the legal system couldn't deliver justice, which is no longer necessary.
The wheels of justice turn slowly but surely, and Aramaki's failure to destroy the boat from the incident years ago has left irrefutable evidence that is sufficient to convict him.
And for the heinous crime of killing three people and evading capture for eight years, he can be sentenced to death.
This disturbance occurred within the bar belonging to the hotel, so the hotel staff naturally witnessed Aramaki's arrest.
Soon, Noboru and his two companions rushed out and looked puzzled as they watched Aramaki being escorted away.
"Are you all surprised why Aramaki is being taken away?" Senichi, who had been keeping an eye on the surroundings, approached them with a smile.
"You're... the one who was with the girl earlier..." Yuta and Noboru, apparently remembering Senichi from the events earlier in the morning, hesitated and asked, "Do you know what's going on?"
"I do, of course," Senichi nodded with an air of certainty. "After all, I'm the one who called the police and had him arrested."
"Huh? You called the police and had him arrested?" The three of them looked bewildered. "Why?"
"This matter is somewhat related to you three," Senichi said as he looked at them and slowly continued, "The three people Aramaki killed at sea back then, were they your fathers?"
"What!!"
"Are you serious!?"
"Aramaki was arrested because of this!?"
Noboru, Yuta, and the third person, Nobutsugu, who had experienced a similar situation as Noboru and Yuta, were immediately excited upon hearing Senichi's words. They wanted to grab Senichi and ask for more details.
"Don't be in such a hurry. If you want to know the whole story, I'll tell you slowly," Senichi stepped back, effortlessly avoiding the hands reaching out for him. He smiled inscrutably and said, "But before that, I want to tell you something."
"What's the matter?" Noboru impatiently urged, "Spit it out!"
"I know that among the three of you, someone has made up their mind to kill Aramaki. Although I've arrested Aramaki now, I hope that you can step forward and admit your mistake."
At this point, Senichi's gaze suddenly became sharp, as if he could see through their hearts. Unconsciously, the three of them took a step back.
"No need to worry. The reason I arrested Aramaki so quickly was a gamble. Under normal circumstances, I would have investigated the case slowly."
Senichi looked at the three of them, and his gaze seemed to penetrate their souls. "The reason I took this risk and acted boldly is that I don't want you to make an irreparable mistake. Now that I've dealt with Aramaki and sought justice for your fathers, and your intention to kill is just a thought, not an action, there's no need to pay the price for it. So, I hope you can step forward and admit your mistake. After all, no matter what, choosing murder as a way to end things is not acceptable!"
Hearing Senichi's words, the three of them exchanged glances, and there was an eerie silence in the air.
Seeing this, Senichi spoke up forcefully, "You have the determination to kill, but do you not have the courage to step forward and admit your mistake?"
"Courage..."
