Chapter 60 - Allies or Threat? (8)

Enzo's shock intensified as he examined the contents of the secret room more closely. The gruesome evidence of experimentation was everywhere, with dismembered limbs and mutated body parts scattered about. The room resembled a macabre laboratory, a place where the boundaries of science and ethics had been obliterated.

Not that a lot of people cared about this now...

His butterflies carefully inspected the room, capturing images of the horrific scenes. It was clear that the organization was engaged in horrifying genetic experiments, not only on monsters but seemingly on humans as well. The implications were staggering.

Enzo's heart sank as he witnessed the grotesque tableau before him. Rows of tubes containing mutant creatures, both human and monster, suspended in an eerie, unnatural slumber. It was a nightmarish display of the extent to which the organization was willing to go in their twisted experiments, or rather to which extent the old man was ready to go as Enzo was sure no one knew about this.

'Is this what the old man meant by greater future?' Enzo couldn't help but wonder about the twisted vision of a "greater future" the old man had mentioned. Could it possibly be tied to these monstrous experiments? The thought sent shivers down his spine.

As his butterfly continued to capture evidence, Enzo's mind raced with questions. What was the ultimate goal of these experiments? How did they plan to use these mutant creatures, both human and monster? And who were the victims subjected to such horrors?

One thing was certain — he needed to stop them right now. Although everyone would most likely be sad to find the old man die, it was for the greater good. After all, if they knew that he was doing such experiments, the old man ought to die.

Nonetheless, he was surrounded by individuals who seemed completely devoted to the cause, and any wrong move could spell disaster.

Enzo knew he had to tread carefully. Stopping the old man and exposing the organization's heinous experiments was a noble goal, but it was fraught with danger. The unwavering loyalty and reverence the group displayed towards the old man were concerning, and Enzo couldn't predict how they would react to his interference.

As he continued to engage in casual conversations with the group, the old man slowly made his way toward him. Enzo couldn't help but feel a chill run down his spine as the old man approached him with that eerie smile. It was a smile that seemed to hide layers of malevolence beneath its surface, and it sent a wave of unease washing over him.

The group fell silent as the old man stopped in front of Enzo. His gaze bore into Enzo's, and for a moment, it felt as if he could see through the facade Enzo had carefully constructed.

"Enzo, my dear, you've been quite the unexpected addition to our little family," the old man said, his voice dripping with a honeyed charm that sent shivers down Enzo's spine yet again. "You even saved a lot of our members, so I wanted to thank you personally for this."

Enzo maintained his nervous demeanor, playing the part of the vulnerable outsider. "I-I'm just grateful for your h-hospitality, sir. A-and it was the l-least I could do as I'll b-be troubling you f-for a while."

The old man's eyes seemed to twinkle with amusement as he continued to study Enzo. It was as if he found great delight in this interaction, knowing that he held the upper hand. He stepped closer, his voice low and conspiratorial.

"You're a modest one, Enzo," he whispered. "But I sense that you're more than you appear. There's a fire within you, a drive to uncover the secrets of this world. Am I correct?"

Enzo couldn't help but gulp. The old man's insight was unsettling. It was as if he could peer into Enzo's very soul. He had to tread carefully.

"I... I'm just a survivor," Enzo replied cautiously. "I've s-seen things out there that... w-well, they've piqued my curiosity. But t-that's all."

The old man's smile never wavered. "Curiosity is a powerful motivator, my boy. It's what has driven us to explore the boundaries of science and possibility. And now, with your unique abilities, you could be an integral part of our journey."

Enzo knew he couldn't outright refuse without arousing suspicion. He decided to feign hesitation. "I'm n-not sure if I'm r-ready for all this. Your organization s-seems... complex."

The old man's eyes gleamed with a mixture of persuasion and intrigue. He seemed intent on not letting Enzo slip through his fingers.

"Complex, indeed," the old man replied, his voice low and soothing. "But Enzo, life is full of complex choices, and sometimes, those choices can lead to incredible discoveries. Think about what we could achieve together. The power to change the course of humanity's future rests within our grasp."

Enzo's mind raced as he looked at the old man carefully. He couldn't deny the allure of what the old man was offering. Knowledge, resources, and protection in a world overrun by monsters were incredibly tempting. But he couldn't forget what he had seen in the secret room—the horrifying experiments, the mutated creatures.

Nonetheless, he wasn't fit to be part of any organization. He was better on his own, and he already had his butterflies with him. So he didn't need anyone's help.

"I-I'm forever grateful for y-your offer, s-sir," Enzo smiled to not arouse any suspicions. "B-but I'll have to decline. I c-can't join any organization f-for the t-time being.

The old man's smile remained fixed, but his eyes seemed to gleam with something that Enzo couldn't quite place. "I understand, Enzo. We can't force anyone to be a part of our vision. Just remember, should you ever change your mind, our doors will always be open to you."

Enzo nodded, trying to appear as relieved as possible. "T-thank you, sir. Y-you've been very k-kind."

As the old man continued on his way, Enzo couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. He had managed to decline the offer without raising any suspicions. Now, he needed to find a way to kill the old man without anyone noticing to put an end to their horrifying experiments.
