Chapter 24 - Oblivious Experimenting

It takes Clemont almost 3 weeks to reach Shalour. Not for the first time does Bonnie curse her brother's incredibly slow speed. During this wait, Korrina grows increasingly impatient for him to arrive. She's often seen rolling up and down the streets near the entrance to Shalour, hoping to see his mop of lightning yellow hair and large glasses bounding up the road. After calling their dad to confirm that Clemont had left for Shalour, Bonnie spends half of her time training for her next badge and half of her time plotting her matchmaking scheme with Max. Max spends his time either helping Bonnie out with matchmaking operation, which she dubbed 'Laserblade', or documenting the pokémon that live in and around Shalour. As for Megan, she spends a lot of her time watching Bonnie train or in the pokémon centre. She spends a lot of her time there on the phone with someone, who she claims is her brother. But neither Max nor Bonnie know what they talk about.

Eventually, those three weeks come and go, and Clemont can finally be seen coming up the road, with a massive bag on his back and wheeling a large cart full of lots of different gizmos. Both Max and Bonnie can tell that Korrina is resisting the urge to skate over and hug him, which would be quite a funny sight. Clemont reaches them and slumps down with his hands on his knees, panting heavily. "Sorry I took so long," he pants, completely out of breath. "But the machines I need for this are stupidly heavy." Korrina giggles at the sight. "Here, let me help," she offers, lifting one of the heavier machines with ease. The sight of Korrina's bulging arms as she does this causes Clemont to blush furiously, much to Max and Bonnie's amusement.

Everyone picks something up from Clemont's cart and follow Korrina to an open field where they can test out Bonnie's Aura without being in anyone's way. But as they headed off, Clemont grabbed Bonnie's shoulder and held her back. "What's up, big brother?" she asks. In truth, she knows exactly why her stopped her but tries to feign innocence. "I know what you're trying to do," he replies, his voice emanating a vague threatening aura. "You called me here to try to match me with Korrina, didn't you?" Bonnie shakes her head furiously, but her eyes don't quite meet Clemont's. "Of course not," she lies. "I called you here because I want to investigate this Aura thing, and Korrina has a Lucario, so I figured it would be easier to test it out here. Well, unless you wanted me to bring Korrina to Lumiose." Clemont goes bright red at the thought of their dad seeing Korrina. He was bad enough when he met Serena. "No, no," he says, letting go of her shoulder. "It's a better idea to test it out here. You're right." Bonnie smiles and goes to run over to Max to begin their plan, but before she can, Clemont calls out to her. "But remember this!" he calls. "I've noticed you've become quite close with Max. If you ask Korrina to take care of me at any point during my time here, well, we'll just have to see how you like it if I ask Max the same question." It's Bonnie's turn to go bright red. She nods her head to show Clemont that she understands his implications, then runs to catch up to Max, determined to keep him well away from her brother, just in case.

Korrina leads the group to an open field on a hill above Shalour. There are lots of different pokémon around, and Max keeps getting distracted by all of them. He keeps getting smacked by Bonnie in order to refocus him. "My Arceus, your ADHD can be a pain sometimes!" she complains. "Takes one to know one!" Clemont calls to her, causing her to blush and Max to laugh. While he and Bonnie set up some of Clemont's less important equipment and plot out ways to pair him and Korrina together, Clemont, Korrina, and Megan work together to set up the more important stuff. Clemont explains to the two of them how his newest Clemontic Gear works. Megan listens intently, hoping that she can get inspiration for her work, while Korrina becomes enamoured with him talking science, as she always does. The sight never fails to make Bonnie laugh, especially because of how Clemont always fails to see it. Bonnie points this out to Max and whispers to him, "This is why I need to find him a keeper for him. He's way too oblivious to do it himself." Max laughs as he finishes up his part of the setup. "I know exactly how you feel," he comments, thinking about May and Drew's constant dancing.

Once everything is set up, Clemont fiddles with one of the devices and plugs a few things to Bonnie's head. "This isn't going to blow up, is it?" she asks nervously. Clemont rolls his eyes, but Max looks at Bonnie nervously, suddenly not so keen on this idea. Clemont notices Max's concern and says quickly, "Don't worry, Max, it's quite safe. She'll be plugged in for only a few momen, and if there's any sign of danger, I'll get her out of there as quick as possible." This does nothing to soothe either of their worries, but they let it slide as it's one of the only ways that Bonnie's plan can work. Clemont adjusts his glasses, then exclaims proudly, "The future is now, thanks to science! Clemontic Gear on! Introducing the Aura Detection Scanner! With this device, we'll be able to see exactly when Bonnie's Aura activates and exactly how it works in her brain." He goes over to the main box of the machine and begins to fiddle with the controls. While he does that, Max sidles up to Korrina and asks, "Are all of his inventions named like that? Because that one definitely needs a lot of work." Korrina laughs. "Yes, they are," she tells him. "It's quite funny. He's good at a great many things, naming things isn't one of them." Max laughs at this, then goes back to focusing on the machine. He wants to be ready to pull Bonnie out if it shows signs of exploding.

Clemont gives Bonnie the all clear, so she begins to meditate, just like Ash told her to. As she does, Korrina releases Lucario and Mega Evolves him, so Bonnie has something to latch her Aura on to. While all of this is happening, Megan is watching the readings and monitors any changes in Bonnie's brain according to the scan. Bonnie sits there, eyes closed and breathing controlled, and she feels out for Lucario's Aura, hoping to latch onto it. From there, she'd feel out for Max's, then the others. As she feels for it, she suddenly comes in contact with a powerful Aura. After feeling it for a few seconds, she realises that it's Lucario's. She begins to link her Aura with his, hoping to be able to speak with him. But, maybe she put too much effort into feeling for the Aura, because the machine starts fizzing. Clemont begins to panic and starts trying to get it back under control. Megan begins furiously taking notes on the readings of the machine before it blows. But Max decides that it's no longer safe, so he quickly jumps onto Bonnie and frees her from the machine and breaking her concentration. The two hit the ground and Max covers Bonnie just as the machine fizzles too much and explodes.

Once Max is sure that Bonnie's alright, he looks back at the ruins of Clemont's device. All that remains of it is a smoking patch of grass and a soot covered Clemont, whose hair has gone all poofy. But, much to Max's pleasure, and Bonnie's when he points it out to her, he had ran to cover Korrina from the blast. Bonnie quickly pulls out her Rotom Phone and snaps a picture of the two, right before they notice the position they're in and spring apart, with Korrina looking quite embarrassed, but happy at what had just transpired. Max and Bonnie giggle at the pair, before they themselves notice the position they found themselves in. Max is still on top of Bonnie in the protectivr position, and their faces are extremely close to each other. They both go very red at this and spring apart, very red in the face. Bonnie looks over at Clemont to see thst he had his own phone out and had taken a picture. "Payback" he mouths, before turning to Megan to have a look at the readings she managed to write down before Max disconnected Bonnie.

"So," Max says awkwardly. "Did you manage to do as Ash said before I... interrupted?" Bonnie can tell he's apologetic for doing so, so she's quick to reassure him that she's glad he did. "It could've been a lot worse if you did nothing," she tells him. "Anyway, yes I did. I managed to feel Lucario's Aura, but you saved me from the explosion before I could do anything with it." Max feels bad about that and is about to apologise again, but Bonnie quickly says, "Like I said, I'm glad you did. Otherwise I could be on my way to hospital by now. Having to start from scratch is a hell of a lot better than that, so don't worry." She hugs him for a second to show her gratitude, but stops when both of them feel their cheeks warming up. Clemont laughs at his sister and her friend's cluelessness. "It's quite funny how Ms. 'Matchmaker Extraordinaire' is totally clueless about her own feelings." Korrina laughs bitterly at that. "Takes one to know one" she mutters to herself. Clemont looks at her quizzically, but she just brushes him off and they start setting up for the next experiment.
