Chereads / To Kill a Monarch / Chapter 2 - Vow

Chapter 2 - Vow

"Aaaahhh!!!", Cordelia screamed on top of her lungs upon seeing the horrible sight in front of her. More tears spilled out of her eyes and she held her head with her hands.

Her father's body was lying lifeless on a brown velvet armchair with his chest hollow. Cordelia crawled to her father while wailing her father's name. She touched her father's body which had turned cold and still.

Cordelia's teary gaze wandered on her father's dead body. There was a blood red hole in his chest area where the heart was located. The heart was pulled out and ribs were stuck out in the open. There was a look of shock written on her father's face; his eyes were wide opened–almost bulging out of the sockets, his mouth was ajar as if he was surprised with the way he was been killed.

Cordelia's body was shaking vigorously as more hot tears flowed down her cheeks. She continued to stare at her father's body. His pulled out heart was lying not far from the brown armchair on the bedroom floor. Who on earth did this to her father the King? What did her father do to deserve this kind of death?

Cordelia's father King Duncan was a loving king who ruled his kingdom with justice, mercy and love. He treated his ministers and subordinates and people with equality.

Cordelia knew her father like the back of her hand to be a good king who was fair to his people and other neighboring kingdoms. He never waged war against any kingdom in the Continent. He never engaged in shady business and deals that would warrant this kind of death for him. Yet, he was murdered in cold blood–in the worst kind of death. Every frigging body was killed and burned brutally in the massacre. Except three people.

Cordelia couldn't sob less. Her eyes was already swollen and red rimmed. She heard incoming footsteps and turned to the door she left ajar.

Meredith walked into the King's bedroom like a zombie. Her eyes was red rimmed just like Cordelia's and her face was stained with tears.

"Princess", Meredith's voice cracked due to intense sobbing. "Ever-ryon-ne is dead", she stuttered before her eyes fell on the cold lifeless body of the King. Her feet stomped forward one after the other until she fell on her knees beside Cordelia. Meredith's quivered at the sorry sight of the King.

Meredith looked at Cordelia while Cordelia's gaze was fixated in her dead father. Meredith raised her hand to the King's face and closed his eyes before closing his mouth with her hand. Meredith wrapped Cordelia's body with her hands, while lowering her head to her shoulder. No new tears could be shed anymore. They stayed still in silence. Their eyes staring into space.

After a long moment of silence.

"There is no home... for us anymore", came Cordelia's hoarse voice, "Evalon is destroyed", a shaky breath followed her voice but no tear fell. Meredith said nothing and stay still.

"There is nowhere else to go to, Meredith", Cordelia continued and her face became hardened. She stood up on her feet and balled her fingers to fists. Her gaze became fierce.

"Whosoever did this to my father, to my home, my kingdom... burned Evalon down and destroyed it to ruins...", Cordelia's voice began to Crack as her eyes watered, "I'll make sure that I kill him. I'll show him how pain felt like. I will stop at nothing until he is six feet underground", she vowed. Vengeance was blazing in her bright blue eyes. A fresh fire was burning in her soul. A fire of revenge and she would make sure that this fire would keep burning and never die until she avenge the deaths of the people of this kingdom, until she avenge the death of her father, until she end the life of the one who caused this massacre. She will not stop. She cannot let the death of her kingdom be in vain. Whatever it takes, how it was going to be, she will make sure that she kill the person. With her two hands and no one was going to do it for her.

Only her, herself will sure that the person take his last breath right before her. Until that moment, she will not stop. Cordelia promised herself to live in order to see the death of her father's killer.

"M-my princess, so you have any idea on who destroyed Evalon?"

"I think I do. Where is Edgar?", Cordelia asked Meredith, she was referring to the coachman who brought them from the journey.

"I don't know", Meredith answered, having no idea where the coachman would be because she left him outside the kingdom's gates.

Cordelia moved away from her father's body, heading for the doors, " Meredith, let's go outside and find a suitable place to bury my father".

Cordelia wanted to have her father's body buried properly. A King's corpse was often buried in the cemetery of the past King's of Evalon but it was unfortunate that her father will not have a befitting funeral, due to the horrible event that took place.

Meredith stood hastily and followed her, trying not to step on dead bodies.
