Despite the worried parents the two kids made a fine if not mundane and boring recovery. Earth mage students managed to rebuild the stone arena in a relatively short time, so by the time the pair recovered they had been sentenced to fixing the inlayed magic.
It wasn't a difficult task bay nature, simply add a magic mixture to the interior of a small channel laid under the arena. This task required two coats of the paint substance and had to meet very stringent criteria in terms of coverage. Further it could have no splatter, and none could be outside of the rim but had to be directly flush with the edge of the rim itself. If mistakes were made, entire sections could have to come up requiring them to be done.
This was why it was commonly used as a punishment for students who stepped out of line or errored.
