JESSICA'S POV
When he said he had found the one, I had not expected this person. It was almost like Lambert had combed the entire world for someone with so much perfection clearly to spite me.
I come from a wolf line of good reputation, but my union with Lambert has been a thing that everyone seemed to question. It all stemmed from a controversy in the past between our ancestors after it had been rumored that my ancestor had refused to provide help intentionally to Lambert's ancestor at a time because he had been hoping to win over power.
Well, I still think of this mindset as cliche in that it does not matter whether one seeks power. Where ever has it been a crime now to dream bigger?
Long story cut short. I met Lambert through an arrangement as my pack had begun falling apart, and we needed to team up with the strongest to scare away all those threatening us. My family had discovered at the time that the heir to the strongest pack was out studying and decided to make ample arrangements for me to get into his school. It was not easy, but eventually, it worked out.
Now, anyone could imagine how easy it had been for us to fall in love, especially after he discovered that I was the only female of his kind that had actually met up with him in the school full of humans. With time, I filled his head with all manner of sordid things that made him believe he was in love with me. However, I had one warning from my family that I was going to see through to the end: I would never get pregnant for him. I came up with a lie that I was sick and probably dying from a poisoning I had suffered as a child. I, therefore, could not carry a child.
But something happened, and we went home after our studies to visit his pack. Then I might have laced a little bit of wolfsbane poison in his father's tea, prompting the old man's death. You would not blame me, either. Upon discovering where I was from, the old wolf kicked vehemently against our union, but his brainwashed son would not listen. I followed him through it all innocently and step by step. Besides, if I was hoping to become Luna, I needed to be with the Alpha himself and not just an heir.
So yes, I made Lambert the Alpha he is today. However, his coronation was not easy as the elders had given him an ultimatum to produce an heir, which I could not openly kick against. At this point, I decided to play nice and allow him to get himself a surrogate. So long as he does not leave me or fall in love with her.
Over and over again, I watched him reject every woman I brought to him when he kept claiming that he would identify the one if he found her. After a long while, the whole matter eventually died down as the pressure was no longer there, and we managed our happy life, although Lambert was yet to wed me. That was something I found confusing because it had been years now. Enough time for us to have married, and I would have carried out the last onslaught to kill him. I still wondered what he was hesitating for, or could it be that he was suspecting me of something?
Weighing this with my family, I was told not to pressure him but lie low. After all, I had already been treated and seen as his Luna. I knew that whatever he was waiting for would soon pass, or so I thought, because right now, I was beginning to realize how wrong I had been.
When he came up to me the previous night after he had returned with the news that he had found her, I was surprised.
This issue again... To think it was all but forgotten.
Of course, I showed my distaste, and when he questioned it by saying he thought that was what I wanted, I said it was indeed, but I was disappointed he would pick someone behind my back.
"Trust me; you would love her when you see her. She's such a simpleton." He had said.
A simpleton?
The lady that stood before me right now was no simpleton. It was clear that he had found a way to sneak in one of his lovers so I would be kicked out, but I would not be sidelined. I wished to the heavens that I could reach out and claw her angelic face or gauge out her beautiful eyes that seemed perfect.
What was Lambert thinking?
He mentioned that I would assist her with picking stuff about the wedding. Still, honestly, I had been hoping for a better introduction—at least something around the spheres of our relationship.
"Sit down, Miranda," I said. He had given me her name.
She walked to take the chair opposite him, and I frowned deeply at her. I was sure they could hear the low growl of my wolf right now.
"Um, she meant on the couch over there," Lambert said.
"Oh, I'm sorry." She muttered, irritating me a lot further.
I said nothing, nor did I spare her a look as I went to sit beside her and opened the list of selected guests.
"Now, we will select people you would want on your train. I have a catalog of people here, although I would be playing your bridesmaid." I announced it to her.
"I do not understand. Do I know these people?" She asked me.
"Let's just say you would get to know them and appreciate their company," I said to her,
"What if I bring my friends, people, instead?" She asked.
"So you could bring in lowlifes and low class? Do you think we would allow you to tarnish our image?" I demanded.
"But..." She began.
"There shall be no buts, and I suggest you readjust. And you better behave because you're only playing the surrogate here. Do not forget your place." I warned her sternly.
Lambert suddenly cleared his throat, and I sincerely hoped it was not to counter me or my methods. The wench needed to be shown her place, and that was final.
"Um... don't you think we're being too hard on her? I mean, she's new here, right?" He asked me to feign Innocence.
My glare before my response certainly did its bit at putting him in his place as it came to seem like he was beginning to forget a little too early.
"I planned this whole event. Allow me to organize it, or I'll drop it all." I warned him.
"I'm sorry. Carry on." He said.
Much better.
That was the tone I should be spoken to with.
Lambert suddenly got up and started to leave the space, which was much preferred. I would not have him choking us with his presence while I turned to face her.
However, she looked straight at him and stopped him from leaving by saying, "But why would she be playing my bridesmaid? Can't I do without one?"
The nerve she had to ask suddenly swept me with anger that rocked my entire being.
I mean, who gave her the right to speak directly to him?
I lost control immediately, and I suddenly faced her and raised my arm.
