Chapter 1 - Prologue: Ascension

Tóng De had finally finished his preparations. Countless Qi formations spun around him and many artifacts glowed from him. Ominous storm clouds gathered above him, but he stood stoically, his long black hair billowing frantically in the chaotic wind.

"Finally I can leave this dull world and truly see what this universe is really about. Who knows, maybe I could even find my way back to Earth eventually." Tóng De transmigrated to the immortal world from Earth over ten thousand years ago, so his attachment to his old home was not as strong as it was before. Instead, Tóng was more exited at the prospect of finally becoming free from the so called "Heavenly Laws" that kept the entire immortal world in a state of ignorance.

Despite having access to the mystical power known as Qi, the immortal world was significantly less developed than Earth. This was primarily because of the Heavenly Laws. The Heavenly Laws are a set of rules which govern a phenomenon known as a Heavenly Tribulation, in which a guilty party: a person, plant, or animal who has broken a Heavenly Law is attacked by nature itself, most often Heavenly Tribulations manifest as an electrical storm. Much like the one forming now.

Cultivators transgress the Heavenly Laws every time their cultivation base reaches the next stage. Tóng had done his research, and this next tribulation would be his last, either it would kill him or he would be too powerful for the heavenly laws to hold him down anymore.

*BOOM* A lightning bolt slammed against the outer layer of Qi around him. "Time to focus!" He said as he furrowed his brow. *BANG* *CRACK* *HOWL* The hail and lightning were relentless in their assault until the first shield dissipated with the sound of shattering glass. He gritted his teeth and clenched his fists until his knuckles were white as bone. *RUMBLE* The earth beneath his feet shook. Suddenly an artifact around his neck glowed with a brown light and the ground in a small circle around him was stable again. *RRRIIIIP* The mountains in the distance were ripped apart, and the valleys looked as though they were the surface of a troubled lake, moving in large waves. *WHOSH* *CRASH* Three twisters the size of entire cities approached him and hurled massive stones and trees at his barrier. The second layer broke. He staggered, but he held out his hands and the gauntlets he wore began glowing a bright green as large plants grew from out of the ground and began to catch the debris. "Just a little longer!" He shouted at himself, he was down to three barriers. Suddenly the chaos stopped and all was calm again, but he was not so gullible to fall for the misdirection. He quickly moved all of his defenses directly overhead, just in time to deflect a meteor. His third barrier snapped like a twig. Another meteor much larger than the first hurtled directly into him and shattered his last two barriers. *Spit* Tóng spat blood. "Looks like I'll have to take on the last one on my own." He could see the large space rock in the distance approaching fast. He shrouded himself in Qi he held out his hands as if he planned to catch the meteor right out of the sky. *RUMMBLE* As he made impact with the meteor it became a contest on who would break first, his Qi infused body, the Qi infused meteor, or the ground beneath his feet. The ground gave way first as he left a deep track in the ground six miles long. Bloody and bruised he had been able to arrest the momentum of the meteor. He threw it down and let out a satisfied sigh as a hair ornament flashed a bright white light, and he was completely healed.

For the first time in a thousand years Tóng could feel his cultivation expand greatly as he pulled in all of the Qi within a ten thousand mile radius. "Finally I'm free!" He floated off the ground and then shot upwards so fast that he red-shifted. After leaving the atmosphere of the planet he turned back and looked at the large world where he had lived most of his second life. "Wow it's almost beautiful from up here. Only almost though, a golden cage is still a cage." As he spun around once again he felt a familiar sensation, teleportation. He was face to face with an unassuming old man who was hunched over a cane and was glaring daggers at Tóng De.
