Chapter 29 - Poison arts and Medical Ninjutsu

Yoriichi P.O.V

Next week we started going to our classes of additional subjects.

First I attended the poison arts class. The teacher was a female kunoichi of Hoshikagi clan. I have to admit Hoshikagi females had a different level of charm and beauty. Her name was Emika Hoshikagi.

"Poisons, toxins and venoms are all poisonous, intoxicating substances - powders, liquids and gases are all the things that can be used by ninja in combat. Poisons come with a variety of effects, ranging from body weakness, paralysis or death."

"Most poison users use poison on their weapons through various means like poisoning your kunai or senbon. Puppet-users prefer to put poison inside their puppets so that they inject via hidden bladed weapons. If you poison someone even for a second that can change the course of battle if the enemy gets paralysed or drowsy or other negative effects. There was even a person during the warring states period who used a different kind of poison - 'The laughing Poison'. When the person was injected by this poison he would die while laughing continuously."

"Those who are experts in medical ninjutsu can treat less lethal poisons easily. Other method to treat poisons is to have antidotes. Those skilled in the fields of chemistry and biology are capable of producing antidotes to the poisons. Apart from using antidotes to poisons, a ninja can also work to build-up a tolerance to certain poisons by gradually exposing oneself to non-lethal amounts of those poisons."

"Those who manage to do well in this subject and are in top 3 of the class will all be taught a B rank technique by the end of 3 years. The technique is called Dokugiri (Ninja Art: Poison Fog)

This technique combines ninjutsu, chemistry, and medical knowledge, thus requiring fine chakra control and advanced ability in medical ninjutsu. The user converts chakra in their body into a special chemical that they then exhale from their mouth. When the chemical comes into contact with the air, it becomes a cloud of poison. Breathing in even a small amount of the poison will cause immediate death." She explained all of this and after that the class got over.

Next up was the class for medical ninjutsu.

The teacher was an old lady from the Uzumaki sub clan of healing.

She explained about medical ninjutsu and different techniques we will be taught.

"Medical ninjutsu (Iryō Ninjutsu)is a branch of ninjutsu associated with healing, as well as the manipulation of their own, or another's body, practised by shinobi categorised as "medical-nin". The use of medical ninjutsu requires very advanced chakra control, as well as extensive knowledge on such things as herbs, medicines, the human body and even poisons."

"In the first year you will all be taught about different herbs and their uses. Along with that you will be taught some basic medical ninjutsu and techniques Let me explain and give you a brief explanation about these jutsus and techniques. These jutsus are basic for a medical nin."

So in short these jutsus were like this.

Shindan (Diagnosis)

The first step in treatment is understanding the problem. With this skill a shinobi uses their hands to carefully probe a patient for problems. This technique is preformed by kneeling over a patient and slowly running both hands over their body, looking for signs of injury that may not be visible to the naked eye. It can detect things such as internal injury, improper heart rate, non-apparent bone fractures, poisoning, and disease. A ninja of higher rank has learned to use this technique to perform a rudimentary examination of a body to determine cause and time of death. A Genin using this skill takes several minutes of work to determine the nature of a problem, a Chunin takes less than a minute and a Jonin requires only a few seconds.

The next jutsu is Kiyomaru (Cleanse). It is not always possible for a medical-nin to practice basic hand washing and other procedures. This technique has the effect of instantly removing bacteria, dirt, blood, and other contaminants from the user's hands, lower arms, and face. It also insures that any breath that comes from the user's body will be free of any bacteria or infectious disease. This technique can also be used to clean the wounds of others in order to prevent infection from bacteria. It the event that the medical nin is using this technique to prevent infection of an injury that has been inflicted upon them, it is used as if the shinobi were using it on somebody else. The next one is Shiatsu (Massage). For a variety of reasons, muscles, tendons, and ligaments can become overworked and painful. This may be because of some type of injury or it may simply be the result of too much work without enough rest. By applying the proper amount of pressure at the right points and using small amounts of chakra a medical-nin is able to relieve pain and help the patients body recover more quickly. A strain or sprain can seriously hinder the effectiveness of a shinobi and as such this technique really can make a difference.A medical-nin must always be aware of becoming a victim of whatever their patient is suffering from. With this technique a medical-nin temporarily increases their resistance to diseases and poisons. It has no effect on diseases or poisons already affecting the medical-nin. This technique improves as the medical-nin grows in power and affords greater resistance to a wider range of diseases and poisons. This can be achieved by the technique Teikouryoku (Power of Resistance).

The next technique is Tekishutsu (Extraction). This is used when a patient's body has a foreign object in it, such as the point of a shuriken, a senbon needle, or an arrow, it is important to remove the object without further harming the patient. Using this technique the medical-nin places their hands on either side of the injured area and uses chakra to very carefully manipulate the surrounding tissues in order to remove the object without causing any further damage. Depending on the severity of the wound and nature of the object, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes to remove it.

After that the class got over. I met with my friends and started today's training.
