It wzs getting late. Crickets were out, chirping loudly as Ferif and Soot trotted through the forest. Soot was looking ahead and Ferif was complaining.
"My paws hurt, Soot!"
"What do you want me to do about it?"
"You're a healing fox, help me!"
"They're judt aching from walking for so long." Soot was sounding like he was getting irritated.
"Then let's take camp!"
"We want to get there as early as we can." Soot said with finality. But Ferif kept complaining. Soot stopped dead in his tracks after a bit. And turned to face her.
"Fine! You wanna rest? We'll rest!" He said, turning away to make a bed out of leaves. He was growling to himself the entire time. Ferif sat back on a log. After a bit Soot had made two beds.
"Rest. We're not gonna stop to rest tomorrow." He curled up in one of the leaf beds under the trees. Ferif trotted over and sat down on the other bed. she opened her mouth to say something, but didn't. Mice scattered through the forest, some birds nestled in their nests. Ferif laid down in the bed, shifting to make herself comfortable, and soon drifted off.
Ferif only got a few hours of sleep when she awoke to loud thunder. Soot was sitting at the edge of the trees. It was raining. Soot was watching the rain. Ferif weakly got up from the bed and shook herself, before going over to sit by Soot.
"The rain is pretty." Soot said when she sat down. Ferif yawned, nodding. She looked over at him. "I'm sorry for getting so mad earlier." he said, looking down.
"It is alright, Soot." Ferif said looking at him. "You were frustrated." She said. Soot nodded.
"...The rain calms me down. What calms you down, Ferif?"
"Want my honest answer?" He nodded. "Being with you." She said this, her eyes softly sparkling as she looked into the rain. The soft pattering and thunder booms soothed her. Water dripped from the vivid green leaves, falling onto her snout and ears. She felt the warmth of something lean on her. She looked down and saw Soot leaning on her, still watching the rain paint everything with water. Ferif wrapped her tail around him lovingly, and for the first time in a while, she felt....
home.
