Laughter and friendly banter filled the forest as Matterinna pursued us in our wild game of tag. "You two are slippery as eels!" she huffed, the twinkling smile in her eyes belying the pretend frustration in her tone.
Illyanna, catching her breath for a moment, called out to Matterinna, "And you are as slow as a tortoise, Matterinna!"
I added fuel to the fire, "Maybe tortoises are faster in this world, Illy!" We laughed harder, our voices mingling with the rustling leaves and whispering wind.
As we rounded the mount, a sight beyond our wildest dreams unfolded before us. Tarvernia, in all its mythical glory, spread out in the valley beneath us. It was a sprawling kingdom of iridescent spires, fantastical creatures, and bustling markets. Beings of all races and classes intermingled, from sky-dwelling Sylphs with their delicate wings fluttering in the breeze, to burly Dwarves bartering at their gem-laden stalls.
"Look at that!" Illyanna exclaimed, pointing to a group of Elves serenading the crowd with ethereal music.
"And there!" I added, pointing towards a Leviathan casually swimming in the great city moat, its scales shimmering with the colors of the setting sun.
Our collective awe and excitement were palpable, electrifying the air around us. Illyanna and I, spurred on by the magical sight, increased our pace despite our panting breaths and aching legs.
"Race you to the city gates!" I challenged, my voice thick with exhilaration.
Illyanna shot me a determined grin, "You're on, Max!"
Our playful taunts and challenges echoed back to Matterinna, who was hot on our heels. "Wait up, you two!" she called, trying to close the gap between us. "Don't make me use my magic!"
Our laughter rang out, echoed by Matterinna's own, as we raced towards the mystical kingdom that was now within our reach. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy - a testament to the bonds we had formed along this journey, a beacon of hope in the dream world I had thought to be an illusion.
The colossal gates of Tarvernia loomed up ahead, yet I could hear Matterinna's panting breaths grow louder as she neared us. My heart pounded in sync with my thudding footsteps, adrenaline coursing through my veins.
Despite our fatigue, we pressed on, a spark of competitiveness lighting up our tired eyes. But I could see Illyanna's stride faltering; she was growing weaker by the second.
"Max," she panted, "I... I can't... I think I'm going to get caught!"
From behind us, Matterinna's playful taunting filled the air, as she pretended to make smooching noises towards Illyanna. "Ready or not, here I come!" she sang.
Seeing my sister's struggle and hearing Matterinna's playful taunts, something ignited within me. I slowed my pace, placing a gentle hand on Illyanna's back and gave her a boost towards the city gates.
In doing so, my exhausted legs gave way beneath me. My knees crumbled to the ground, sending me toppling onto the grass. Matterinna, too winded to stop, tumbled over me in a mess of giggles and exhaustion, her body draped over mine.
From the city gates, Illyanna's laughter echoed back to us, carrying an infectious joy that made the townsfolk join in. I met Matterinna's gaze, a cheeky smirk forming on my face. "Well, what are you waiting for? Isn't it punishment time?"
Her cheeks flushed as she playfully smacked her lips together, the crowd's chants for a mock penalty growing louder.
After a moment of playful defiance, she softened. "Thank you, Max, for making today so wonderful," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Promise me you'll treasure this family you've created, even if it's just a dream."
My heart filled with warmth at her words. "That's why I created it, Matterinna. To escape from my reality."
Her fingers traced the side of my face, the tender gesture catching me off guard. "I can see that in your eyes. I can see your loneliness," she murmured. "From now on, let's be a family together. I'll protect you, Master Max."
With that, she closed her eyes and planted soft, playful kisses on my cheeks while squeezing me in a tight embrace. I reveled in the warmth and affection, until the strength of her hug and the relentless peppering of kisses became overwhelming, and I found myself calling out for help amidst fits of laughter.
When she finally released me, she strode towards the city gates, proclaiming her victory. "The winners are Illyanna and Matterinna! The loser is Max!"
Exhausted and defeated, I lay sprawled on the grass, lifting a feeble thumbs up to the sky in acknowledgment. Amidst the laughter and cheer, I felt a strange sense of belonging in this dream world of mine - a sense of home that reality had never given me.
As I endeavored to rise, I found Illyanna and Matterinna already extending their hands towards me. Gratefully, I reached out, feeling their strong grip hauling me back to my feet.
Their eyes held a shared excitement, mirroring my own as we began to stride towards the towering gates of Tarvernia. The warmth of camaraderie surrounded us, forming an invisible shield that encased us in our own world.
Gossiping among themselves, the city guards watched our approach. One, a burly man with a thick beard, grumbled about our dramatic entrance. Yet, his companion, a young guard with earnest eyes, was moved by our display.
In a choked voice, he confessed that our shared mirth reminded him of his family, who were a continent away. He had journeyed to Tarvernia in hopes of amassing fortune, leaving his loved ones behind. His eyes misted up with the longing of seeing familiar faces again.
Finally, as we crossed the threshold of Tarvernia's gates, we were greeted by a world bustling with vibrant energy. It was as if the city itself was alive, with every corner humming with exhilarating life.
I could see Matterinna reminiscing as we wandered deeper into the city. "It's been almost a decade since I last set foot here," she murmured, her voice tinged with nostalgia.
Turning to me and Illyanna, she asked, "So, what do you think?"
Illyanna's eyes were wide, her expression mirroring the awe I felt. She bubbled with enthusiasm, her words barely able to catch up with her thoughts. "This is just like your stories, Matterinna! I can hardly believe it's real."
With a warm smile, Matterinna nudged her forward, "Then, why don't you lead us, Illyanna?"
Her face lit up at the suggestion, and she quickly took the lead, darting around the city streets like an excited hummingbird, leaving us trailing in her wake.
With a fond look at Illyanna's retreating figure, Matterinna turned to me, "And you, Max? How do you feel?"
Unabashed, I admitted, "I feel exactly like Illyanna. It's breathtaking."
A gentle smile touched her lips as she replied, "I'm glad you're enjoying it, Max."
As evening approached, the city of Tarvernia continued to buzz with life. Despite the fading daylight, the streets were crowded with people, each one contributing to the colorful tapestry that made up the heart of the city. The three of us reveled in the vibrant ambiance, losing ourselves in the heart of Tarvernia.
