They flipped through the book in order to get a clearer picture of what was going to be needed for the spells. They were indeed very simple, with no extra equipment needed, and Bastian was pretty confident that he could pull them off by memory alone after pushing the instructions into his mind.

No, Bastian and the girls repeatedly pointed out that while they did have to rest after fighting off various abominations, it felt wrong to do so by breaking and entering. Pirates were supposed to cause mayhem on the high seas, not in people's homes. They were not burglars or anything truly vile like that. They just killed people and took their property, but at least they did it on the waves.
