Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 The World Around Us

The van door blasted open. There were a lot of people that rushed out to make way for the accident.

"Will I make it?" David's eyes fluttered, trying to stay alive.

"You will. Stay awake." I replied.

I let go of David and watched the medical team drag David into the emergency room. I prayed hard as the doors slammed shut.

The woman from the Mercedez came out to meet me.

"How is he? Will he stay alive?" Cara asked me in a hushed tone.

"I'm not sure." I fumbled my bag for my phone.

"I hope he will make it," Cara muttered. She didn't look too upset.

"How do you know David?" I turned around to ask her after checking my phone.

It was 4.53 pm. I sighed in relief. I wasn't working, so I did not have to bother about work from the boss.

I beckoned to Cara. I dragged her to a corner of the hospital to have a chat.

"Who is Daniel?"

"He's my fiancée, the CEO."

"Oh."

"I'm very sorry you had to see that."

"My god… I…"

"He will be fine. I am more distressed over this compared to you. I am, after all, his fiancée, and the wedding is in three weeks…."

"I'm so sorry. I am a stranger, but this incident in front of the flower shop…."

"I understand how you feel, Rita."

"Do you think he will make it, Cara?"

A long moment of silence.

"If he doesn't make it, it will still be better for him to go to heaven than survive with handicapped limbs."

"What? No! He will be fine."

"He might not have a full body when he gets up."

Cara turned away, grimacing slightly.

"But, he might still survive, by how I look at it."

"Christ, no. He will be fine."

I turn away from Cara as well. We both fall into silence.

I could not imagine if David ended up surviving with a handicap. No, I have to think positively. It will not be this way.

"So, how did the both of you meet?" I probed.

"It's an arranged marriage. But actually, I already met him in college, eight years ago. I also did not expect a marriage contract with a CEO." Cara replied in a composed manner.

The phone rang. Cara picked it up.

"The CEO got into an accident. I'll return to the office after he wakes. Cancel the meeting."

"Alright, Madam."

Cara slams the phone shut and continues her conversation with me.

"I believe we can get insurance for David —"

The emergency room door slams open.

"Who's this man's relative?"

I back away and wait for Cara to say something.

"I'm his fiancée. Is he alright?"

The doctor looked a bit down.

"He's alive, but he lost his legs."

My heart fell to the ground.

"What? Is there any hope for recovery?"

Cara had a panicked look on her face.

"A miracle, maybe. But, meager chances."

The doctor gave one last look at the report. He looked at me.

I avoided his glance. I walked away. I took one last look at Cara and went back home. I thought this was over and done with and we would never meet again. I never knew how wrong I was.

Three days later, I rushed to the hospital to meet David. The doctor said he was no longer critical, so I rushed to talk to him.

"Are you okay?"

"Mmhm. I'm fine."

"Thank you for saving me."

"Oh."

"So, do you want something in return for saving me?"

I gasped.

"No, certainly not, sir!"

"I can't feel my legs, but maybe I will recover. Your name is Rita, right?"

"Yes, sir!"

"Don't call me sir, just David."

"Alright…"

"Tell me, did you meet anyone when you rescued me?"

That statement left me astonished.

"Yes. Your… fiancée…" I stammered.

"Hmm." David gave a long pause.

"I just came here to check on you."

"Yes, I know."

"We come from different worlds, yet, I feel you are important to me."

The words shot out of my mouth.

"I live in a rich man's world. You wouldn't understand it. Everything is about money and power. But there is no one genuine in your life."

"Oh. That's… my life when my father left me and my mother. I was also from a rich family, but we became poor because another woman took my father away… I'm sorry. I blabbered." I felt flustered.

"It's okay. But, uhm." David paused.

"I need someone to take care of me. Is it possible if you take care of me for a while? I don't have family or friends, and it is already obvious that you are the only one who cares."

"But, I already have a sick mother ———" I stop midway.

Three days ago, I was becoming desperate to help this man, a complete stranger. Unfortunately, I was so drawn to him; I simply could not help but open up to him. Maybe this was fate.

"I have no one but my mother with me. My father left her with a lot of money when he divorced, but money doesn't help when my mother is going to die of cancer."

I opened up to David.

David turned away slightly. He suddenly became lost in thought.

"David?"

He turned and looked at me.

"I think you are very kind to me."

"What?"

He looked at me with tears shining in his eyes.

"I'm beginning to fall for you. You saved my life."

His eyes grew bigger, and I could see an adoring look.

I snapped to reality.

"You have a fiancée."

I told him directly.

"Yes, but we are not in love,"

"What?"

I began to open my mouth, only to realize that Cara mentioned something like a marriage contract.

Born from a wealthy family, I suddenly realized I understood what he meant by having a marriage contract and no genuine people in our lives.

"Wait. I will talk to Cara and then come back for you."

"Wait, don't go. Let's talk some more."

David pleaded.

"I'm sorry. I'll be back in an hour."

"Oh…"

I left David on the hospital bed and marched out of the hospital. The truth was going to come out, and I could already smell a fish.
