Chapter 10 - Unveiling the Patriarch

Arata was standing there, trying to get his head around what he just did. It was on the spur of the moment, after getting shot in his left arm, but he still killed two men. The last guy he shot told him they weren't planning on killing him, as per their boss' orders.

His expression kept getting darker and darker, as his thoughts were all over the place. It seemed like he couldn't believe he could do such a thing.

He looked at his hand, which was bloodied. It was shaking. Arata glanced at the corpses, and he started feeling sick. He couldn't look at the bodies anymore, and as his body increasingly started feeling weak, he fell down to his knees.

(So I really killed two men...)

Those are the kind of thoughts that he was thinking, and it seemed that he forgot his original purpose for coming here.

Amidst this, shouts could be heard coming from a distance.

"To all personnel, the suspect is on the fifth floor close to the stairs!"

Hearing this, Arata came to his senses.

(Right... I came here to rescue my brother, Akeru. They kidnapped him. Why should I feel bad for some people who would literally kidnap my brother without batting an eye? Actually, they deserved it.)

He stood up, and checked his gun. He still had 2 ammunition left of the current loaded magazine. He chose not to reload now, as that would waste 2 ammo which could be put to good use.

Footsteps were getting closer, and Arata decided to make his move. He went up the stairs to the sixth floor. There was one floor left between him and the boss' room.

There weren't stairs connected to the seventh floor here, that's why he needed to search for them, or depending which he found faster, he could take the elevator too.

And so, he began searching. After running through halls and not coming across anyone, he found the elevator leading up to floor seven. He called the elevator, and a minute later it was there.

Entering the elevator and pressing the button to floor seven, he got there in no time at all.

Arata was expecting for more yakuza members to be waiting outside of the elevator, but to his surprise, there was no one. Stepping out, he looked around. While there were many rooms, just like on the other floors, the one in front of him stood out from the rest.

The door leading to it was fancier compared to the rest, and next to the door there was a sign written "Chief's Office".

"Finally found it."

Kicking the door to the room, he stepped inside it. He was met with a highly decorated room. There were two sofas facing each other, and in the middle of them was a table. In front of the sofas and table, was the chief's desk. The office chair, which looked to be made out of really expensive leather, was turned to its back. Although Arata couldn't see the face of the figure sitting on it, the person had slightly longer wavy white hair, and seemed to be in his fifties.

"I have been waiting for you." a voice could be heard echoing through the room. The self confidence oozing from the rough voice was evident.

"So you're the culprit behind it all."

"That's right. I am the one who kidnapped your brother, Akira. However, I didn't expect you to come to me alone. What a pleasant surprise." replied the voice with sarcasm. "So tell me, what is your plan?"

"Well, I could easily place a bullet right in your skull, since it seems there aren't any bodyguards in here." said Arata, in a voice devoid of emotion.

"Haha, how fearful. Since you went through a lot just to come here, how about I enlighten you about my goal?"

Saying this, the man in the chair started slowly rotating the chair towards Arata, who was highly alert. Moments later, the man could be seen. His facial features closely resembled that of Arata, albeit he looked older. Upon seeing him, Arata was shocked.

"Father!?"

"Yes. You thought it was some random yakuza boss? No, it was me all along!" said Arata's father, as he gave his son a smug. He looked like he enjoyed seeing his son's reaction to the reveal.

"But why? Why would you kidnap your own fucking son and then demand ransom? Have you gone senile, you old man!?" shouted Arata at his own father.

"Don't be so rude, I don't think we raised you this way. Anyway... To answer your question, no we didn't kidnap him, I went to our apartment and told him to come with me. Don't worry, he's safe. Actually, he's currently playing that game, uh, what was it again... Fortnaito?"

"You disappear for a few years, telling us you're going on a working trip to Dubai... And then you appear now as the head of the yakuza, making me think you kidnapped my little brother and you're telling me not to talk to you that way!?"

"Let's get past that, shall we?"

"Ugh, fine. So, if Akira is alright, then why did you do this?"

"Well... You see? I am getting older, I'm already in my fifties, you know? I don't want to continue this occupation anymore since I can't move my body as well as I used to. So, because I'm thinking of retiring, I needed a successor. And, what better candidate is there, other than my own son?" looking at his son, he continued.

"Everything that happened so far was staged, in order to test you. To see if you are a worthy successor to inherit my business. And, what would you guess? I was right! Haha." chuckled the father.

"So... This was all for nothing?"

"I mean, not really... But it depends on how you look at things."

"So I just killed two men for nothing?"

"That's wrong-"

Just as his father was about to say something, the door to his office swung open. A young man in his twenties entered the room as he shouted towards Arata. Taking his gun out, he shot him in the stomach about three times.
