Chapter 6

Shirley thought about it for a minute and understood how to return. Shirley took a plane ride back home and thought the case through on the way there. Shirley asked herself, "If Kris isn't behind this like I thought, who is? And do I do what he wants? I guess I have no choice. If I want to save my parents, that is." Once Shirley got home, she researched on her computer and tried to figure out where the diamond was hidden. Shirley said, "I have less than three days to find that diamond, or my parents are goners. Kris must have hidden it somewhere nobody would think to look. But where?"

Shirley remembered finding clues in the library basement, so she had a theory. Shirley went back to the library and hid there until closing. Once the librarian locked up the library, Shirley came out from hiding and went to the faculty room to find the blueprints for the library. Shirley said, "If my haunch is right..." Shirley took down the blueprints for the library and found the blueprints for the bank. Shirley said, "This library was built on the site of Kris' bank, which was robbed and then torn down. And now I think I know where that diamond is and who's behind this."

Shirley then used the key to the basement and her flashlight to look around. She saw a loose board on the floor, removed it, and found a hidden box. Shirley opened the box and found the diamond inside. Once she found the diamond, Shirley thought about it and figured that even if she gave it to the culprit, he wouldn't let her parents go and would probably take her hostage, too, so she needed a plan.

Once she had a plan, Shirley returned to the bad guy's hideout and brought the diamond. Shirley then snuck around looking for the guy and found her parents. Then she untied them and set them free. Shirley said, "Run. Get out of here." Mr. and Mrs. Hudson ran for it, and the bad guy spotted her. The hooded figure said, "Ok, you got your parents." Shirley turned around and saw the hooded figure behind her. The hooded figure raised his hand and said, "Now give me that diamond." Shirley said, "Fine." Shirley brought the diamond from inside her backpack and gave it to the hooded figure." The hooded figure said, "Yes. It's mine." Shirley pushed a button on a remote she was hiding behind her back, making the diamond launch a net at the guy, capturing him. The hooded figure said, "What? What is this?" Shirley said, "A trap. I switched the diamonds." Shirley showed the hooded figure that she still had the diamond and said, "The one you took was fake."

Shirley's parents returned to the police and saw Shirley had caught the guy. The policeman said, "Excellent work, Shirley." The police officer pointed at the hooded figure and said, "But who's this?" Shirley removed the guy's hood and said, "Edward Paws. Or as he's better known as Edward Yates." The policeman said, "Yates? As in Kristopher Yates, the bank president." Shirley said, "That's right. Changing names runs in the family. So Kris was the one behind this. He robbed the $10,000,000 from his bank and framed Elizabeth for it. He then used his smarts to change the $10,000,000 into a diamond worth $10,000,000. But as Mr. Paws showed me, his grandfather died, and he never told anyone where he hid the diamond, not even his wife or son. It took me a while to figure it out, but he hid it in the last place anyone would look: the bank itself. The money never left the bank. The bank then got torn down, and a library was built on the site of it. After the bank got torn down, Kris Yates changed his name to Knab Relgrub, which is Bank Burglar spelled backward. Mr. Paws did the same when he applied to school so no one would figure out he was related to a thief. What led me to Mr. Paws was the research he did at his grandfather's house. So I figured he had to be after the diamond. He also kidnapped my parents and tried to waste me because he was afraid I would figure it out, which I did. I also found the key to the library's basement under his bed in his room at his house, which means he had to be the one I chased in the library and saw go into the basement. I found his clothes and yearbook in a backpack when I got down there. That means he must have changed out of his clothes and into the masked guy's outfit. To cover his tracks, he made everyone think he was dead by throwing his car into the Mississippi River." Edward said, "And I would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that pesky girl."

Shirley then gave the diamond to the police, who took it to the museum, and Mr. Paws was sent to jail. The next day, Shirley and her parents looked at the newspapers and saw Shirley on the front page. Mr. Hudson said, "Hey Shirley, listen to this. Teenage Sletuh clears Elizabeth Malice's name by uncovering that the culprit behind Mr. Paws' disappearance was Mr. Paws himself. You cracked the case, found Mr. Paws, and cleared Elizabeth's name. You might make a great detective for the future." Shirley said, "Well, I guess if people see my story, they will need me." Shirley visited Jennifer and asked her if she had seen the paper.

Jennifer said, "Yep. Thank you." Shirley said, "It was the least I could do. Your great-grandmother was framed, and she needed to be proven innocent. Especially since I live at her house now." Jennifer said, "So, you think you'll do this again sometime?" Shirley said, "Well, it was fun. I even told my parents I would if I was needed. I'm sure everyone's happy that she's been proven innocent. Well, everyone except the family who framed her." Jennifer said, "Yeah, but faking his death, he deserved it." Shirley said, "And instead of being rich, he's in jail." Shirley and Jennifer then hugged, and Shirley left. Then Shirley got in her car, put on her shades to make herself look like a spy again, and turned on the radio to listen to music. Then she drove off, celebrating her victory on her way home.
