Chapter 10 - The mossy realm

The air was humid enough to stick my hair in place. While it was not bright outside it was daytime and little sun showed through the trees. Lights and glowing things were hung through trees and vines. Everything was richly green and brown. I haven't traveled much in my life but if anything this would remind me of the rainforest. But there were some slight differences. We walked quickly next to some sort of stream. This stream was not water but some dark murky substance that bubbled and popped. Not unlike the substance I was thrown into by Caligo. Creatures were by the river and small wooden boats floated by. I was not sure how well they could move on the thick liquid but the boats paddled by unfazed. There were many creatures around. I saw a tree, an actual tree pick up its roots and move to another spot and settle back down. I saw pixies everywhere, but they all gave us a wide berth. Caligo was exuding an aura that made all things keep their distance.

There was a cloud of bugs that made the distinct shape of a man, then actually turned into a man, with no bugs in sight. He glanced at Caligo and me and smiled with bugs crawling out of his eyes and mouth. I thought I had seen some things but that made me want to puke.

A pack of catlike creatures was running in the distance. They were much bigger than cats on Earth but I wouldn't dare approach them. I already distrusted cats that were the size of a handbag. We were approaching a settlement that was not in the trees. These houses were made of oddly shaped stone and lopsided. It seemed more natural like the rocks fell from the sky to make little homes. Caligo turned so we walked on the outside of the houses until we arrived at a particularly mossy house with a dark wooden door.

"Wait outside, I will be just a minute." He knocks three times and enters the hovel. I was fine waiting outside, in fact, I have been inside for days now and would much rather glance around. I stayed relatively close to the door since there was a vine I noticed that wrapped itself around my wrist. He must be able to control them. That's the power of a prince I guess. I had the power to kill and maim and eat.

The yard next door had a well and a strange pig tied up that had mushrooms growing all over it. The pig was resting so I drew closer to it using the quiet steps that the ghoul's body gave me. It looked completely alive even with mushrooms attached to its flesh, they were mostly the big ear-shaped ones growing off its side, but right at the top where the pig was laying there was a row of glowing fungus. If I knew anything about what glowing meant, probably something magical or poisonous, or maybe both.

The pig stirred and opened its eyes startling to see me it squealed a high-pitched ear aching noise. This is when I noticed its slobbering mouth filled with catlike teeth. Okay, that is a predator, not a prey.
