Chapter 1 - Prologue: Heart of the Throne

The imperial palace gleamed under the silver light of the moon, its golden rooftops casting long, foreboding shadows across the stone courtyards. Within those walls, where beauty and grandeur reigned supreme, the air was thick with intrigue and ambition. It was a place where smiles hid daggers, loyalty was a mask, and survival demanded more than innocence—it required ruthlessness.

At the heart of this labyrinth of power stood Lian Yun, her delicate frame draped in the resplendent robes of the Empress Dowager. The seal of supreme authority rested heavy in her hand, its weight a cruel reminder of the path she had taken to reach this pinnacle. Before her knelt a row of trembling figures—ministers, concubines, and nobles who had once wielded power over her. Now, their heads bowed in submission, their voices silenced by fear.

Yun's eyes, once bright with youthful hope, were now cold and unyielding, like a winter storm. She had long abandoned the naïve girl who had entered these gates, believing in the ideals of love and justice. That girl was gone, lost in the tide of betrayals and bloodshed that had shaped her into the woman she had become.

She took a deep breath, her gaze sweeping across the opulent throne room, its walls adorned with golden dragons and silk tapestries. This place had been her cage, her battleground, and now, her domain. Yet, as the most powerful figure in the empire, she found no joy in her victory. Only an unshakable resolve remained—to ensure that no one would ever control her again.

Years Ago - A Girl's Journey Begins

When Lian Yun first entered into the palace, she had been a simple village girl, known for her quiet beauty and gentle demeanor, yet unremarkable. Her father, a humble scholar, had fallen into sudden debt, and the entrance to the palace for Yun as a humble servant is the only way to save her family from the depths of financial ruin.

To her, the palace was a place of wonder. She admired the shimmering jade fountains, the fragrant gardens where exotic flowers seen only in the palace bloomed all year round, and the exquisite silk clothes worn by the noblewomen. It was a world far removed from her humble upbringing, a place that seemed touched by the divine.

But beneath the surface of its beauty lay an evil world far darker than Lian Yun could have ever imagined.

Her first lesson came swiftly. A senior maid had accused her of stealing a silver hairpin - a trinket Yun had never even seen. Despite countless protests screaming for her innocence, she was dragged to the servants' punishment room and was beaten harshly as a warning. It was only later that Yun discovered the truth: the maid had purposely planted the hairpin to divert suspicion from her own theft. It was from then she realised somehow that lies were often more powerful than seeking the truth.

Yun tried to keep her head down, to avoid being noticed by those above her. But fate often has other plans. One faithful day, while delivering tea to the imperial gardens she caught the attention of a young nobleman, Xuan Jun, known as Prince Jian of the First Rank. Struck by her beauty, he arranged for Yun to be promoted as a palace attendant, serving Consort Xian, placing her closer to the royal family.

At first, Yun was flattered by Xuan Jun's kindness. His gentle words and soft smiles were a comfort during dark times, warming her weary heart. But her close relationship with Xuan Jun made her a target for jealousy. The concubines viewed her as a rival, the servants resented her sudden rise in power, and whispers of favoritism spread like wildfire.

One night, Yun returned to her sleeping quarters to find her belongings burned and the word "whore" scrawled on the wall. When she tried to report the incident, she was dismissed with a warning: " Learn your place servant, or you'll lose more than your possessions."

Still, Yun's heart clung to hope. She believed if she stayed true to herself, she could handle the cruelty of the palace. But the turning point came when she became entangled in a conspiracy against the royal palace she had no part in.

The First Betrayal

It was a crisp autumn evening when Yun was suddenly summoned to the emperor's private study. Her body trembled as she approached the grand doors, unsure of why she was summoned. Inside, the emperor sat with his advisors, their expressions grim.

"You've been accused of passing important information to the enemies of the Great Yin," one of the ministers declared, tossing a scroll at her feet. Yun's heart sank as she recognised the handwriting - it was hers. Letters she had written to her family, filled with mundane details of her life in the royal palace, had been altered to include treasonous words against the royal family.

Desperate to prove her innocence, Yun pleaded with tears streaming down her face. " I would never betray Great Yin. please, Your Majesty, I am being framed!"

But her cries fell on deaf ears. The emperor, cold and unforgiving, ordered her imprisonment. It was through the intervention of Xian Jun, who vouched for her loyalty, that Yun's life was spared. Yet the damage is done. Her reputation was tarnished, and she was left with a chilling realisation: in the palace, even innocence could be turned as a weapon against you.

The Turning Point

Yun's imprisonment marked the beginning of her transformation. While confined to a dark, damp cell, she replayed the event leading to her downfall. She saw clearly how her naivety had made her an easy target, how her trust in others had led to her descent.

When she was released, Yun returned to the palace a changed woman. No longer innocent, she sought to know the palace's intrigues, resolving to master them. She began her move by observing the women around her - the calculative concubines, the shrewd dowagers, the manipulative ministers' wives. She studied their tactics, their current alliances, and finally, their fatal weaknesses.

Bit by bit, Yun began to rebuild her standing. She forged alliances with overlooked servants and minor officials, using favors and secrets as currency, she cultivated a mask of meekness, allowing her enemies to underestimate her while she worked in the shadows.

Her opportunity came when a scandal erupted in the royal harem. Imperial Concubine Shun accused Empress De of poisoning her, throwing the royal palace into chaos. Yun, armed with evidence she had quietly gathered, exposed the truth: the concubine had poisoned herself in an attempt to frame the empress. Her revelation earned her the empress's gratitude and a position as her trusted attendant.

From there, Yun's ascent was unstoppable. She maneuvered through the palace's treacherous waters with precision, dismantling her enemies one by one. When Xian Jun ascended the throne as Emperor, she became an Imperial Noble Consort. And when his reign was cut short by illness, she positioned herself as the birth mother of his young heir, securing her place as Empress Dowager.

The Empress Dowager's Throne

Now, as the most powerful woman in the Great Yin, Yun stood above the very people who have sought to destroy her. But the victory felt hollow. The sacrifices she had made - the innocence abandoned, the friendships lost - left a void that no amount of power could fill.

As she gazed down at the kneeling figures in the throne room, a bitter smile played on her lips. She had won the game, but at what cost?

The palace had turned her into a creature of its making, a woman who could no longer recognize the girl she had once been. And yet, she knew there was no turning back. The crown she wore was not just a symbol of power - it was her shield, her armor, her survival.

With a voice as cold as the winter wind, she addressed the assembly. "You sought to break me, to bury me. But you forget one thing." Her gaze swept over them, unflinching. " I am a survivor. And in this palace, only the strongest survive."

The hall felt silent, her words echoing like a warning. As the Empress Dowager turned and ascended her throne, she allowed herself one final thought:

Power was her only ally now, and she would wield it without mercy.
