Chapter 36 - Journey

A sudden visitor disrupted the atmosphere, abruptly shifting Nitin's focus from the belated birthday celebration to a sense of unease.

He had been anticipating an unexpected visit, but the fear of receiving yet another piece of bad news loomed large in his mind.

He knew that this unforeseen event could potentially shatter the plans he had worked so hard to put in place and the promises he had made to his family.

Nitin's mind raced as he prepared himself for the worst, bracing for the impact of whatever news was about to be delivered.

With a determined resolve to face whatever came his way, he left his office and began to walk slowly, each step fraught with suspense and apprehension.

As he moved closer to the entrance, his thoughts were dominated by a sense of impending dread.

Just as he was about to reach the door, a familiar voice reached his ears, freezing his thoughts in their tracks.

The voice was unmistakably familiar, and it halted his racing mind.

Nitin's steps quickened as he approached the entrance, unable to believe what he was hearing.

The voice was so deeply ingrained in his memory that he recognized it instantly.

As he reached the entrance, his eyes widened in disbelief and his heart swelled with a mixture of emotions.

A young child, around 7 years old, wearing a black hoodie and pants, came running towards him with a wide, satisfied smile.

"Father! Surpriseeee!" the child exclaimed, his joy infectious.

Tears welled up in Nitin's eyes as he looked at the child, his own son, standing before him with that heartwarming smile.

It was a moment that defied the gravity of the situation he had been anticipating.

The fear and unease that had consumed him were replaced with an overwhelming rush of love, relief, and pure joy.

He knelt down to embrace his son, holding him tightly as tears streamed down his face.

The weight of his responsibilities, the challenges he faced, and the constant fear that had burdened him all melted away in that moment of connection.

In the embrace of his son, Nitin realized that amidst all the chaos and uncertainty, the love and bond he shared with his family were the anchor that kept him grounded.

The promises, the plans, and the duty to protect the city were important, but they were secondary to the happiness and well-being of his loved ones.

As they held each other, Nitin's heart swelled with gratitude for this unexpected surprise.

"You are not coming home, so we came," his wife said with a pleading tone, a hint of excitement in her eyes as she assisted him with this sudden surprise.

Nitin sighed, a mix of worry and relief washing over him.

He hadn't expected his family to show up, especially given the current situation in the city. "You know what the situation is around here. You shouldn't left the house without letting me know," he replied, his concern evident in his furrowed brows.

His wife gently placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "Three security guards are always roaming around our home. They follow us everywhere I go, or our son. I asked them to help me, so they did."

Nitin's eyes narrowed, his gaze shifting to the outside where the three guards were engaged in conversation.

As his gaze settled on them, a sudden silence seemed to descend upon the area.

The guards stopped talking, their expressions becoming more guarded as they met Nitin's gaze.

It was clear that they had noticed his scrutiny, and it was equally clear that there was more to this situation than met the eye.

But for now, this is what Nitin needed to believe, focusing on the present moment and letting all necessary worries fade away.

With a small smile, he said, "c'mon, Rishi, I'll show you my department." His gaze rested on his wife and son, a mixture of affection and concern in his eyes.

Guiding Rishi along, Nitin led him through the bustling corridors of his workplace.

He wanted to give his son a glimpse of his professional life, to show him the scale of the department and the dedicated individuals who worked there.

In the back of his mind, he had always entertained the idea of inspiring Rishi to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer one day.

But as the current situation unfolded around them, Nitin's thoughts took a different turn.

As they walked, Nitin couldn't help but notice the palpable tension in the air.

Colleagues exchanged hushed conversations, their expressions a mix of determination and concern.

The urgency of the moment was not lost on him, and he realized that his earlier dreams of encouraging Rishi to join the police force were now shadowed by the gravity of the situation.

As they continued their tour, Nitin found himself sharing stories with Rishi – stories of camaraderie, of challenges, and of the pursuit of justice.

He emphasized the importance of courage, integrity, and empathy in their line of work. But as they walked through the halls, Nitin's underlying message was clear – that whatever path Rishi chose, his safety and happiness were what truly mattered.

As Nitin and his son, Rishi, continued their walk through the department, a noticeable contrast emerged between Rishi's demeanor around others and his behavior when he was with his father.

Nitin couldn't help but notice that his son seemed rather reserved and shy around his father's colleagues and associates, keeping to himself and avoiding interactions. It was clear that Rishi wasn't comfortable in such social settings.

However, in the presence of Nitin, Rishi's behavior underwent a transformation. His shyness seemed to melt away, replaced by a vibrant curiosity and eagerness to learn.

As they strolled through the corridors, Rishi's eyes lit up with wonder, and he bombarded his father with questions about the various aspects of the department.

"Dad, what's that room for?" Rishi pointed at a closed door they were passing by.

"That's the evidence room, son," Nitin replied with a warm smile. "It's where we store all the items that are connected to ongoing investigations."

Rishi's fascination was palpable. "And what about that board with all the pictures and strings?"

Nitin chuckled. "That's our investigation board. We use it to connect the dots and track leads in complex cases."

Rishi's inquisitive mind didn't seem to tire.

He continued to ask about everything he saw – from the computers and gadgets on the desks to the uniforms worn by the officers.

Nitin patiently answered each question, his heart swelling with pride at his son's genuine interest.

"You know, Rishi," Nitin said as they paused by a window overlooking the city, "being a police officer is about more than just solving crimes. It's about helping people, keeping our city safe, and making a positive difference."

Rishi looked up at his father, his eyes wide with admiration. "I want to help people too, Dad."

Nitin's heart skipped a beat, touched by his son's aspirations. He placed a hand on Rishi's shoulder. "You have a kind heart, Rishi. Whatever you choose to do in life, just remember that making a difference, no matter how small, matters a lot."

Nitin quickly redirected their conversation, shifting their focus away from the images of crime scenes that he didn't want Rishi to see.

He led his son toward the cafeteria, a place of solace and warmth within the bustling police department.

Nitin wanted to show Rishi a different aspect of their work environment, something more lighthearted and relatable.

As they entered the cafeteria, the aroma of freshly cooked food enveloped them.

Nitin's eyes landed on the chef, a skilled culinary artist who took great pride in nourishing the officers and staff with delicious meals.

Nitin approached the chef with a smile, introducing him to Rishi.

"Rishi, this is Chef Raj. He's the one who makes all the amazing food that keeps us going through the day," Nitin said, gesturing toward the chef.

Chef Raj greeted them warmly, his face breaking into a wide grin. "Ah, Nitin, it's always a pleasure to see you. And this must be your son, Rishi. Welcome!"

Nitin glanced at Rishi, who seemed both intrigued and a bit overwhelmed by the bustling atmosphere of the cafeteria. "Rishi, Chef Raj is a magician in the kitchen. He can turn simple ingredients into the most delicious meals you've ever tasted."

Rishi's eyes widened with curiosity. "Really? Can you cook anything?"

Chef Raj chuckled. "Almost anything, young man. I've been cooking for years, and I love trying out new recipes. It's a bit like solving a puzzle, you know."

Rishi smiled shyly. "I like puzzles too."

Nitin watched the interaction between his son and Chef Raj with a sense of contentment.

He knew that showing Rishi the camaraderie and the everyday aspects of police work was just as important as sharing the more intense parts.

As they chatted with Chef Raj and learned about his own family, Nitin's thoughts drifted back to the unspoken concerns that had been lingering in his mind.

While he had always hoped to inspire Rishi to consider a career in law enforcement, he couldn't ignore the harsh realities of the job.

The long hours, the emotional toll, the difficult decisions – these were all parts of the package that Nitin grappled with daily.

As they continued their journey through the department, he realized that there would be a time when he'd have to explain the challenges and sacrifices more honestly to his son.

But for now, in this moment, he allowed himself to bask in the simpler joys of their father-son connection, sharing laughter and experiences that transcended the complexities of their roles in a changing world.
