Chapter 2 - Message

The captain glanced at the paper and yawned. Because the rest of the content was encrypted, he had no desire to decipher the parchment.

He seemed to be in no hurry to read the paper. He looked at the bouncing device placed in the corner, pointed at it, and complained to Althur.

It was a rectangular machine assembled from pieces of copper and wood, with coils of copper coiled around the outside and attached to a thin steel rod that protruded straight up. How it vomited up the paper seems to be a mystery.

The captain sighed, "They said that because I always receive mail late. So, they installed a machine that could send it directly to my room."

He mimicked the tone of feigned kindness that he heard. "Oh, it's good for you! Saves you time finding lost postmen. Isn't that hard on you because you're locked up?"

"Is that so?" Althur smiled. "I used to hear that except for direct mail, the postmen seem to forget how to do their job properly when receiving your letters."

"It was obvious that someone was messing with the letters."

"Yes, of course it is." Althur looked at the middle-aged man, whom he perceived as one of his fellows.

There was a delay in the man's voice. "Guess who said that?" But he quickly changed the subject.

"This weird and puzzling thing is one of the few that was added when those headstrong people proposed to add it in the branches. I don't know how much, but they looked like they had to bleed a lot. Some highfalutin learned something from looking at lightning bolts, which we can't feel, that... hmm. Technology what? They did something with the railroad and got this thing."

"Telegraph technology. A wonderful thing. It's a pretty hot topic right now. Now people talk about it everywhere. Rumors of Lord Norton and his young mistress would be known as far as Apolonia Harbor." Althur smiled lightly as he replied.

"Yes, that damn wave in the air—that thing that's transparent but flows around us. Then some crazy people got hold of them and made this thing. However, I had dissected it and looked through it, but I still couldn't figure out what the wave was. Strange."

"It's normal, I could say. Maybe this kind of wave is like gravity. We know it exists, yet we never notice it."

The man turned his head towards the window, and several large buildings outside came into view.

"I heard that the royal army is extremely excited about this new invention. The same is true, since I know they can already produce them. The transmission will be simpler. After all, the elaborate rituals of transmitting the news were not possible for everyone. However, I don't think the idiots sitting in that Building wouldn't be able to come up with this. Maybe those little cowards were sold to the royal family. Those greedy creatures always know how to make money."

"It was something unimaginable to many people."

"Think about it; it was only a few years ago when we still used horses for transportation and birds for mail. But now, railways are everywhere, and receivers and broadcast towers are being built massively. Everything changes quickly." Althur said.

At the same time, he added, "Both you and I know that this thing wasn't made by them. That Fair was just a formality. It was all planned and moved by some kind of covered force there."

Althur did not comment further on the subject; he pointed to the paper, which was slowly crumpled after the middle-aged man's words. "Shouldn't you be focusing on what the paper says now?"

"Haha, damn it." The man muttered, "I don't really want to read at all; because of these things, my workload increases even more."

Even so, he picked up the paper and began to read it seriously. The middle-aged man's expression turned stern as he stared at the paper.

For a moment, the man touched his nose slightly and raised an eyebrow. The air in the room froze for a time, and the only sound was the breathing of the two men. After he finished reading, he handed the paper to Althur and fell into silence. Both focus on the content the paper conveys.

"With modern technology, however, the more convenient everything becomes, the less time we seem to have." Althur took the paper and examined its appearance before commenting.

"A death for a professional exorcist, As well as some unsolved mysteries."

"Every exorcist is a valuable asset to the organization. However, this is a career fraught with risks. There's nothing we can do about it, though, if tomorrow is crazier than yesterday." The man said.

"Not much information is conveyed. No sign of fascination, madness, or possession, just dead in his sleep."

"Have there been any similar cases before?" Althur asked as his eyebrows rose slightly.

" No. If the Exorcist dies, at least there will be abnormalities, whether invisible or visible. If a supernatural person dies, distortion will occur in the surroundings."

"Anything is possible."

"Maybe."

In this world, there are frequent cases of demonic possession. These people show signs of insanity, self-harm, or harm to others. There are cases that change the surrounding area, creating many unusual supernatural phenomena.

To counteract this, the force led by the Sanctums under the banner of religion, possessing divine powers, took on the task of preventing and destroying such things for an extremely long time in history.

Many gods and religious organizations existed in history. However, there are a few rules to which any congregation must adhere. That is, only bishops, priests, or peers who have had training and have the confidence of the council may preside at an exorcism. And any other act of exorcism except this one must be against the rules. This is all heresy.

Exorcism rituals and spells are esoteric traditions that have been handed down within the church for millennia. It is an affirmation of the power of the gods against evil, transgression, and anarchy.

The Sanctums and government don't allow supernatural existences to get out of hand. In the Helioric Kingdom, this was only relaxed over 500 years ago with the establishment of the Isandros Academy.

Many supernatural organizations were later established under the influence of this event, including the Organization of the Sincerity and Pray for the Instability Souls, known as O.S.P.I.S. for short.
