[X771, Path to Magnolia]
— Dannis Martell —
I whistled a tune as I slowly walked towards the direction of Magnolia from where I am now. I had just finished a solo B Class mission and it was still pretty early. I wanted to enjoy the scenery while traveling back to the guild.
It's been around a year since I had the prosthetic eye with the lacrima implanted in me. Ever since then, my efficiency as a mage skyrocketed. With the ability to see the future, even a simple few seconds which is what I'm capable of right now, combat became so much easier.
I'm now able to predict people's movements and react accordingly. Half the missions I've gone on all involved combat. It was intentional since Laxus and I want to improve a lot more and gain more experience.
We were still far from being able to take on the likes of Gildarts, but the both of us were slowly but surely building our strength.
This time however, I took a job that involved exterminating a nest of goblins. They were strange little critters that had enough intelligence to wield their own makeshift weapons, but not much else.
These goblins often travel in groups and whenever you find them, a nest is usually built closeby. The client, a farmer, ran into them a few days back and requested for a mage to exterminate them before they cause more trouble.
Laxus was supposed to come with me and we were supposed to do the job together like we always do. But Ivan Dreyar, Laxus's shitty old man and Master Makarov's son, apparently wanted to take him on their own mission as a duo.
Something about Laxus growing stronger than expected and wanting to see that strength for himself. I didn't really get it to be honest, and Ivan had always been kind of a wackjob. But he was still Laxus's dad so I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Anywho, I never realized how quiet it is going on a mission alone. I've always liked the peace and quiet, a strange luxury that had been missing in my life ever since I joined Fairy Tail.
That place, as much I appreciated Makarov for taking me in, could use a little less intensity if I had to be honest. But that rambunctiousness had always been Fairy Tail's charm.
The sound of ruffling leaves to my right got me to pause. I stood still for a moment as my instinct of danger, one that I had cultivated ever since I went on missions, rang out to me like a bell.
That was when it happened. I felt a tingle as my left eye, one that was covered by the bangs of my hair, glowed red. A glimpse of the future a few seconds away from now played out in my mind.
I immediately swung around, my blade unsheathed in one swift motion as I slashed behind me, decapitating a sneaking goblin. I then shifted my head to the right and left, dodging crudely made arrows before I pointed my palm to the trees.
Dark energy coalesced at the edge of my palm as a goblin was pulled from its perch on the branches of a tree to my awaiting hand. I held it by the neck, a simple stab to the heart was all it took to end its life.
Quickly turning to the side, I sent a wordless slash towards the last waiting goblin. The slash of darkness flew through and lacerated the poor creature's torso.
I slowly surveyed my surroundings before resheathing my blade.
'Must be survivors from the goblin colony I took out.'
I reached onto each of the goblins corpses before cutting out their ears. My client was the one who advised on doing this since apparently, goblin ears fetch a pretty good price on the market. Good alchemical ingredients if I remember correctly.
After that was done, I resumed my trek back to Magnolia. It was another successful mission, and another job well done for my growing career as a mage.
All in a day's work.

– Laxus Dreyar –
If there was one thing Laxus could use to describe Dannis, it would be a madman.
"How…how the hell are you still going?"
It's been 6 hours since they started training. 6 hours and Dannis still wanted to keep going.
"Heh…Hehehe. Someone's getting tired, I see."
Laxus glared at his friend as he shakily stood back up on his feet. Even when they're both a panting mess, there's no way Laxus would be bested by Dannis that easily.
Dannis held out a shaky arm in front of him as he concentrated.
"Darkness Magic: Black Hole!"
A swirling mass of darkness manifested in front of him and Laxus watched as the air around it seemed to be sucked in the hole.
"Now Laxus, try and shoot a lightning blast at me."
Laxus raised his eyebrow before he decided to humor his friend. He focused his magic as he summoned a small bolt of lighting. It wasn't as powerful as the one he usually makes, but it should suffice for whatever experiment Dannis wanted to do.
"Go!"
The bolt of lightning was launched towards the mass of darkness, and Laxus watched in awe as the lightning was sucked into and absorbed into the black hole.
"Perfect." Dannis had a predatory grin on his usual calm and stoic face. "Looks like my guess was correct."
"You were guessing?"
"Well duh." Dannis gave a shrug that for some reason annoyed Laxus to no end. "My magic is so unique that I have no idea what it could do, Laxus. I need to know every possibilities of my magic if I want any hope in mastering it. How much magic power could I absorb before my magic gets overpowered? Does absorbing it mean I just take them away or could they add to my own magic reserves and possibly restore them? Can I absorb material objects? If I do, where do they go? Does that mean I also have a potential storage space with my magic? How much different is it with requip? There's also the fact that I could coat my body and weapons with darkness. Does it do anything else than improve durability and strength? What about my ability to pull and push people? Is it gravity based with me as its center point or is it telekinetic based? I could also extend the range of my sword with my darkness, could I also create armor with it? What about-"
Laxus's jaw dropped as his best friend went on and on about the list of things he needed to find out about his magic. All of the training, both today and the previous days, were all just a test to find out the way to use his magic?
Laxus looked into his own raised arm, he had never even thought of the things he could do with his own magic. Could there be other ways he could utilize his lightning? Creative applications aside from the lightning bolts and lightning blasts?
Dannis had also gotten crazy strong ever since he got that eye. Laxus's attacks now barely ever graze him and now he'd now have to work extra hard to think ahead and try to match Dannis's moves.
"-and if I want to be an S-Class mage one day, that means I'll have to master every single aspect of my magic. And when I've mastered them, I can start to create even bigger things. I could create that black hole the size of a freaking moon. Or maybe even a powerful slash that cuts through dimensions. Can you believe it, Laxus? Imagine, my absorption ability combined with my slashes to create an attack that could cut through virtually anything. I'm going to be unstoppable-"
His friend is an absolute madman. He realized this quite a while ago. He's heard some rumors from people when they went on missions saying his friend is a monster. A demon in human form. His magic only proves that his life is destined to be shrouded in darkness.
Well he calls bullshit on that. What's dangerous isn't his magic, but it's Dannis himself. Who the hell thinks of an unstoppable slash attack with magic that could suck things up?
"-and I can already see it! My ultimate finishing move! It would be- Oi, Laxus? You there?"
"Yes, I am!" Laxus snapped back. "What now?"
"Great! Help me test something out!"
Laxus just sighed, but he conceded anyway.
"What now? Is there something else you wanna test?"
Dannis lifted his arm as his dark mist started pooling into his arm.
"Let's try combining our magic, I wanna see if it'll be possible for me to enhance other people's magic."
Laxus's confusion must be clear on his face for Dannis immediately explained his idea.
"I can enhance my sword with darkness to make it stronger. If I can help with your Lightning, it means we can combine our magic! Imagine it Laxus, between my support and your raw power, we'll be unstoppable!"
Laxus could immediately feel the same manic grin on Dannis's face forming on his own.
He could honestly barely remember what happened after that, all he knew was that it worked. Dannis's crazy idea had worked.
Their magic could mesh with each other. It wasn't a Unison Raid, far from it, but their newfound discovery had opened up a whole new world for them to discover.
The both of them got severely reprimanded by Gramps after that, since they could barely get out of bed for the next two days. But it was all worth it.
If they work hard enough, their dream of becoming an unstoppable duo can become a reality.

AN: Laxus and Dannis continue to grow in strength. My goal is to show these two properly build up a friendship and their powers before eventually becoming the monsters they would be in Canon.
Hope you enjoyed the story thus far.
