Kenji's heart raced as he looked at the man standing at the entrance to the alley. He didn't recognize him, but the way he spoke Kenji's name made him feel like he knew him.
"What do you want?" Kenji asked, trying to keep his voice steady.
The man stepped forward, his shadow stretching out before him. "I want to talk to you," he said, his voice low and gravelly.
Kenji took a step back, his hand reaching for something to defend himself. But there was nothing there, and he felt a sense of vulnerability wash over him.
"I don't know you," Kenji said, trying to sound confident. "Leave me alone."
The man chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down Kenji's spine. "Oh, but you will know me, Kenji. You will know me very well."
Kenji's mind raced as he tried to think of a way out of the situation. He didn't want to get into a fight, but he also didn't want to be cornered by this stranger.
"Who are you?" Kenji asked, his voice shaking slightly.
The man stepped closer, and Kenji could see his face now. He was older, with a rough beard and piercing blue eyes. There was a scar above his left eyebrow that looked like it had been there for years.
"My name is Takeshi," the man said. "And I've been sent to find you."
Kenji's heart sank. He had a feeling he knew who had sent this man. It could only be one person - his former boss, Kato.
"What does Kato want?" Kenji asked, trying to sound calm.
Takeshi's face twisted into a scowl. "He wants you back, Kenji. He wants you back in the yakuza."
Kenji felt a wave of anger wash over him. He had worked hard to get away from that life, and he didn't want to go back. He looked Takeshi in the eye, determined to stand his ground.
"I'm not going back," Kenji said firmly. "You can tell Kato that."
Takeshi's expression softened slightly. "I understand, Kenji. But you have to understand something too. You can't just walk away from the yakuza. There are consequences for that."
Kenji felt a chill run down his spine. He knew what Takeshi meant. He had heard stories of what happened to those who tried to leave the yakuza. It was not something he wanted to experience.
"I don't want any trouble," Kenji said, his voice shaking.
Takeshi stepped closer, his hand reaching out to touch Kenji's shoulder. "I'm not here to cause trouble, Kenji. I'm here to offer you a way out."
Kenji looked at Takeshi, unsure of what he meant. "What way out?"
Takeshi leaned in close to Kenji's ear, his voice barely above a whisper. "There's a man who can help you disappear, Kenji. He can give you a new identity, a new life. But you have to come with me now, before it's too late."
Kenji hesitated, unsure of what to do. He knew he couldn't go back to the yakuza, but he also didn't want to run away from his problems.
Takeshi must have sensed his hesitation, because he leaned in closer and whispered again. "Trust me, Kenji. This is your only chance."
Kenji took a deep breath, weighing his options. He didn't know if he could trust Takeshi, but he also didn't know if he had a choice.
