The moonlight shines bright in my backyard. My nightgown moves in the gentle breeze as I take the steps off the back porch into the grass. Instead of staring at the usual big fence surrounding the area, I can now look out to the woods without any nosey neighbors. A howl pierces the air to bring goosebumps to my skin.
"What are you doing out here?"
I jump and quickly turn to see Kyle not a few steps away.
"Go back inside, I am fine."
"Davina, it is too cold out here. You need to come with me back inside the house."
He grabs my arm and tries to drag me with him back inside the house but I try to resist.
"Kyle let go, you cannot tell me what to do."
"No, you will listen to me and come inside now."
I start to lose blood circulation as he squeezes my arm even harder. My arm begins to go numb.
"I said let go!!!"
Growling, I swing my arm to connect with his chest. His body flies a couple feet away to land on the soft ground in front of the steps.
"Are you insane?"
I watch in shock as Kyle picks himself up off the ground and storms back inside the house.
'How did I even do that?'
"What is going on with me? What is wrong?"
"Nothing is wrong with you dear."
The sudden masculine voice behind me causes my blood to run cold as the fear sinks in. I feel my soul leave my body.
"Please do not hurt me," I whisper.
"I would never do such a thing, turn around and see why my dear."
Thinking it is best not to make the stranger mad, I slowly turn around to be completely surprised by who my unexpected visitor is.
"This is not possible, you are not really here."
'This is not real, it cannot be?'
I stare at the six foot, brown-haired, brown eyed stranger to realize he is not a stranger at all but indeed my very own father.
"This is definitely not real. I must be dreaming. I have to be."
He smiles, "I can guarantee that I am real. The part of you dreaming however is more complicating. You are in fact still in bed and sound asleep but I am really here."
"What do you mean I am still asleep," I ask confused.
"You punching Kyle to the ground was just a dream. I am here through visiting your dreams."
"I still do not understand. You said you are really here visiting my dreams while I sleep, how? How is this possible?"
"It does not matter how. What matters is what I am about to tell you."
"What is going on? Where have you been all these years? This is all so confusing. Why are you just now visiting me?"
"I know I owe you an explanation but I do not have much time. I promise to tell you everything another time but for right now I wanted to let you know that you cannot always trust the people closest to you."
"That is okay, I am not close to anyone really. I am not even close to my own mother anymore."
"Your mother is actually who I am talking about to be honest. You can't trust her."
"What do you mean?"
"Your mother has been keeping a very important secret from you and it is time for you to figure out what it is."
"What secret?"
"I think it is best if you ask her yourself. Now I have to go before you wake up."
At the mention of waking up, I suddenly become very dizzy.
"Dad?"
"I know dear. I will be back but there is one more thing I need to tell you."
"What is it?"
He grins, "the wolves are your friends, trust the wolves. They will protect you."
I do not even get to say goodbye before I open my eyes and realize I had indeed been dreaming.
'Why would I dream about my father after all these years?'
I glance down at the necklace my mother had given me the day she told me my father had left us. I was only eight years old and could not understand why he would leave me behind. Now that I am older, I sometimes wonder if it is my mother who drove him away long ago. There is one thing from my dream that sticks out more than the rest of it did though.
'If my dad was in fact visiting my dreams, which I doubt because how is that possible. Then how did he know about the wolves and me spending time with them?'
"The wolves are my friends. I trust them," I whisper to myself.
'How did he know about them?'
I laugh and shake my head.
'There is no reason to get worked up about it since it was all just a dream.'
With it only being nine in the morning, I decide to get changed into yoga pants and a tank to go for a little run. While I am running, I begin to think back on the past couple years and what I have done to get where I currently am today. The day my father left was the first time I had attended one of my mother's filming sessions. I was so intrigued with everything that I decided to always go with her to every filming session from that day forward.
The day I turned eighteen, my mother officially announced to the world that I would follow in her footsteps to become the next best actress. From that point on, I have worked on my acting skills every day to become the best and I have indeed thanks to my mother.
'Now I wonder though what would have happened if I had not become the number one actress in the movie boxes. Maybe my life would be a lot simpler or would my life still be crazy because of my mother? Would my father have come back?'
I continue to contemplate the actions of my past as I make my way and jog back home. Completely ignoring Kyle, who is sitting on the couch watching tv, I run up the stairs to take a hot shower. After I finish blow drying my hair I change into more comfortable clothing then head back downstairs. I sit down on the recliner to relax and watch the news.
Usually I could care less but more recently the paparazzi cannot keep my name out of the newspapers. Currently channel seven is talking about the premiere for the night and who all would be coming. I quickly get bored and pick my book up off the side table to begin reading where I left off.
"I figured you would like to watch people obsessively talk about and adore you."
"Why? Do you find me self-absorbed? I am sorry Kyle, I hate to disappoint but I am pretty sure you mixed me up with yourself. I am nothing like you."
"Yeah, I got that right away. Why are you reading?"
"It helps to calm me. Plus, I find it fun to lose myself in a good book."
"That is just dumb."
I sigh and get up off the recliner.
"I would not ask you to understand because I know you cannot comprehend anything at all no matter how simple it might be."
I grab my book and head to the back porch to shut the door behind me.
'Finally, I can relax without the concern of Kyle.'
I sit down on the top step and continue my reading where I left off. As I keep reading, minutes seem to go by very fast-like. I do not notice how long I have been outside until I look up from my book to see the sun setting. Sighing, I grab my book and go inside to get ready for the premiere tonight. I am just finishing curling my hair and am getting ready to put my dress on when Kyle walks into my room.
"I was going to ask if you are ready but it does not look like it. Nice outfit by the way."
"Ugh, you are such a pain. Why did you not come and get me from outside?"
I heavily groan as I vastly slip my dress on to hide the white lingerie I have on from Kyle's roaming eyes.
"I figured you were keeping track of time. Plus, I know how much you love to be late for these kinds of things. What do you call it, fashionably late?"
"You are such an idiot, we cannot be late. This premiere is for us and our movie. We have to be there for them to show it for the first time to the public."
I finish getting dressed to put my heels on then lightly apply make-up to my face.
"Oh well I forgot that part."
"Yeah well let's go before my mother notices we are not there yet and have to hear her complain about it."
I call for the limo as I grab my purse to head out. Our driver pulls right up to the red carpet they have laid out for the premiere tonight. As we arrive, millions of flashing lights start to go off as a guy in a tux struts up to open the limo door. I sigh and look at Kyle.
"Showtime."
Slowly, I step out of the limo with a smile on my face. Kyle follows beside me as he wraps his arm around my waist. I try to smile through the utter disgust I feel. We pose as the paparazzi take pictures of us together.
'Will my life be like this from now on? No privacy and pretending to date my costar? Will I ever get rid of Kyle or be stuck with him?'
I take hold of Kyle's hand and continue to walk to the movie theater entrance where my mother is already awaiting for our arrival.
"You both look so cute together," she exclaims with excitement.
'Ugh, why is it she cannot see that I do not want to date Kyle?'
"Why thank you Martha, you look very beautiful tonight as well."
'He is such a suck up to her, sometimes it makes me sick.'
My eyes look upon her one of a kind long blue Chanel dress.
'She no doubt wants to stand out on a night that is supposed to be for me and Kyle. I'm not even surprised.'
"Ahh, you are finally here. Are you ready to see how it all came together?"
I nod as Marcell walks toward us grinning. Letting go of Kyle, I wrap my arm in Marcell's and smile.
"Of course, shall we go in?"
"Yes, why don't we all go in and grab seats before they start letting everyone else into the theater?"
Marcell leads us inside and to the front row for us to take our seats. Seconds later, everyone else is starting to pile in and fill up the rest of the seats in every row possible. As soon as the last of the crowd sits down, the movie begins to play on the big screen. Scenes appear one by one as I watch intrigued.
First comes the moments of Maria and her simple life, followed by the moment she confesses to her friends about liking Erik. Her friends warn her that he is a player and will never go steady with her, but Maria feels she can change him to be a better person if need be. The movie continues, showing scenes of the two characters interacting with one another and eventually getting together. Maria and Erik go on so many dates throughout the movie and both soon fall in love.
It is then that Erik becomes scared of his feelings for Maria and decides to do something about it. The last scene pops up on the screen as tears well up in my eyes. I watch as Erik leaves Maria with a lie about wanting to see the world. Maria confronts him about his lie but does not get the answer she is hoping for so she walks away from her lover forever. I try to lightly wipe my tears away as the screen goes black and the lights come on.
Marcell stands up and faces the entire crowd as they all applaud him on his work.
"Thank you all but I could not have done it without my stars. Ladies and Gentlemen, Davina and Kyle!!!"
As everyone claps louder, I stand up smiling toward them to wave. Kyle follows pursuit as he pulls me to his side.
'Why does he always have to put his hands on me?'
I slowly step out of his grasp to congratulate Marcell on his amazing work on the movie.
"You did a wonderful job, I love how it all turned out."
He smiles, "if you think this movie was a success, just wait until we finish the next one."
"When did you want to start exactly?"
"Actually, I was thinking about the day after tomorrow. We have a lot of work ahead of us, so I was hoping we could start early."
"I will see you then, again, excellent job on the movie."
I say my goodbyes as the security arrives to escort us out of the theater. The whole ride home, Kyle is playing on his phone which I do not mind since he is being quiet. As soon as we arrive home, I go straight to my room and immediately get out of my tight dress. I wipe off my make-up and brush my hair then lay down on my soft bed to fall asleep.
