"Boy or girl? I can't wait to know the answer." Gwen walked around excitedly, ready to rush into the delivery room at any moment.
After about a minute, the baby's cries faded, the door to the delivery room remained closed, and Ulric asked in a shaky voice, "Why hasn't anyone come out yet?"
Gwen gave him a look and explained, "After the baby is born, the doctor will give him or her a quick exam and clean him or her before you can see the baby."
Ulric let out a "hmm".
He remembered with some sadness that he had missed Pearl's birth. He took a cigarette out of his pocket, then he suddenly realized something and hurriedly threw it in the trash.
