The mage quickly cast a spell on Luna to decrease her speed and to hold the exploder break free. As a result, he was able to slow Luna down but he was not able to escape Ella's attacks.
He sacrificed a massive amount of his health just to hold the exploder out.
But that did not even matter to Luna. She continued her combo and the lack of speed did not matter to her. Her combo had become a high enough number to grant her extra speed anyway.

The exploder asked before his heath hit zero. Everyone was surprised at the rapid and explosive display of power Luna showed.
