Chereads / Wandering in Another World / Chapter 41 - Win a Heart

Chapter 41 - Win a Heart

Early the next day as we were making our way out, Foss, the owner of the inn we had stayed at, had made us a packed lunch of rice balls. We thanked him and quickly made our way to the mountain side. Just before we got out there was a group of people there waiting for us.

"Sigh" Hajime's tone sounded exhausted. "Let's get this over with." He told us.

"What are you guys doing here?" Aiko came closer to us, her eyes dull with lack of sleep. Her mascara attempted to try and hide her sleep heavy eyes, which fooled the casual eyewitness.

"I think she's wearing makeup…" I whispered to Hajime.

"I know." Hajime answered me bluntly. He stepped forward. "I can guess where this is going but go ahead."

Aiko attempts a cheerful mood, not fooling either myself or Hajime. "The bigger the group the better, we can find the missing party and Shimizu, whom we've yet to find."

"You can try and tag along, but don't expect this to be one big group. You'll just slow us down."

"You're not telling us you can go faster than our horses." Yuka interjected. "That crazy pressure you projected yesterday sent shivers down our spines, as if you're not human."

Hajime summons two motorcycles, shimmering energy bringing forth the vehicles.

"Look, I'm not bullshitting you guys. Not only our speeds, but our overall power and abilities are just that different. If you guys want to try you can, but I'm not going to be holding your hands!"

Aiko gets close to Hajime, only inches away and whispering low to him. I could still hear him, so did Shea and Yue, but the rest didn't.

"Look," Aiko was serious. "You laid down some pretty serious stuff the other day, and I want to go over it with you. We can talk on the road, or whenever we hunker down. In exchange, we'll leave you alone!"

Hajime was clearly disgruntled.

"Fine, you can come with us." He removed the motorcycles back into the Treasure Trove and spawned a giant vehicle, a military type hummer that's decked out with extra slots of armor covering it. I shivered seeing this vehicle, recalling all the past versions that I had to test out, many of which sent me flying high to the sky.

"Hajime!" Noboru yelled out. " How fast do those motorcycles go?!"

Hajime ignored his question and gestured to everyone to get in the back of the hummer. The kids were awed at the interior of a car, reminding them of home. Hajime, Yue, and Aiko sat in the front, Shae and I sat right behind them.

"I want to be up in the front seat…" Shea grumbled.

"Someday," I murmured. "You'll be in the coveted front seat."

As they drove, Aiko turned to whisper to me. "Are you sure you guys were blown off the bridge that day? And it wasn't an accident?"

"Oh, it definitely wasn't an accident." I replied. "Whoever attacked us clearly hit their mark."

"Young lady!" Aiko she hushed harshly. "You have to take this situation seriously! At least Hajime knew to do so last night, but you? You seem to be taking everything as a joke! You almost died out there! Does this sound like one big joke to you!"

I wanted to let out a joke, but nothing came out. Aiko was right, I hate to admit it. All these last few encounters like the Husks and five headed dragon were clearly life and death situations. Any of us would be lying dead right now and that would have been it. Considering Hajime didn't quip back, this was a serious talk.

"You're right, Miss Aiko. I know that this is serious, but I still fool around too much. Maybe this is how I try to deal with it, but going forward I'll be more considerate with our situations, especially when it comes with you."

Aiko sighed in relief. Afterwards, she discussed with us about the situation with the Gods and how we fell into this world. I held my tongue on who sent Hajime and myself here. After some more driving, Aiko fell asleep on Hajime's shoulder. Yue glared with annoyance at the sight.

"I plan to sit there myself when we drive back." Yue told Hajime bluntly.

"Hey! When can I sit there?!" Shea exclaimed. "I want to be at the front as well!"

Shea's breasts placed themselves firmly on top of Hajime's head as he felt her warmth. I could hear the young men from before start to talk amongst themselves.

"No way! Hajime has all those girls all over him!"

"I want to feel that girl's beautiful breasts all over my hands!"

"That Yue girl is pretty cute too!"

"Hey! Should we ask Hajime how to pick up chicks in this world."

I could only chuckle at their hormones working on overdrive. I felt Yuka's slender hand tap me on the shoulder.

"Thank you again, Selena. I could never forget you."

"Everything alright?"

Yuka let out a soft sigh.

"Yes, no, I don't know. All this time I thought Hajime sacrificed himself for us. And for the longest time I was simply broken…"

I saw Hajime stiffened a bit, the declaration clearly got to him. I also noticed Shea was smiling even more, clearly discovering more reasons to love and desire him.

"You know, I think Hajime should be the one to hear this from you, I'm sure he'd appreciate it."

Yuka's gorgeous face looked up at me with eyes brimming with hope.

"You think so? If he needs me, I can always be there."

I noticed this eased Hajime's presence, which was usually on edge. Yue on the other hand stiffened, and I saw her fists ball up as she sent a side glance my way. She clearly didn't appreciate me having another girl open up to Hajime, especially since whenever they do, they seem to always get sucked into that harem of his. Lucky bastard….

The car continued the trek, and Yuka and I just talked about anything and everything that was on our mind. I noticed that throughout the talks she would eye my breasts while also looking at hers, clearly comparing our sizes. I held my tongue and sympathized, back in my old life mine weren't that incredible, in general this sexy body of mind I never would have dreamed of ever having. The car finally came to a stop.

"Alright, everyone out!"

I saw Aiko slowly getting off of Hajime's shoulder, a drool line briefly connecting the two. Hajime took off his drenched sweater and spawned a brand new one to wear. Aiko blushed madly that she slept so intimately with a student, but at least none of the students seem to notice. Everyone gathered together to see Hajime remove the Hummer from existence and in its place were a group of flying objects, four of them.

"What are those?" Aiko asked.

"Human seeking automatons. I call them Ornises." Hajime replied.

"I just call them bat-a-rangs." I comment.

Hajime points at a bracelet he wore with four gems on it.

"I can control these through here. It's why I wear an eyepatch, tons of information is processed through there, helps me focus on the information."

Atsushi spoke up. "I thought that was just cause you wanted to look cool! Didn't think it had a purpose."

Two shots go off as rubber bullets smack the boy's forehead hard.

"I'll shoot you, damn it!"

"You already did…" the girls said in low tones.

While that was going on, Aiko seemed to recompose herself, taking a deep breath as if regaining her resolve.

Hajime had already started walking up the mountain, Yue and Shea following closely behind him. They moved with practiced ease, their synchronized steps showing how naturally they had adapted to traveling together. I was about to leap forward and catch up when I suddenly felt a tug on my sleeve. Turning around, I saw Aiko standing there, an uneasy expression clouding her face.

"Can I talk to you while we walk?" she asked hesitantly.

I glanced up at the sky, hoping to see the massive black dragon hovering above us, ready to carry us forward. Instead, all I saw were clear skies and drifting clouds. My initial impulse was to dismiss her, but I hesitated, recalling my conversation with the old man—the one that reminded me that sometimes, listening was just as important as fighting. I sighed inwardly and shrugged, letting my feet remain planted. The leap I was about to take was halted. Hajime seemed to notice but chose to let things unfold naturally, his focus still ahead.

"What do you want to know, Teach?" I asked, glancing back at Aiko.

She bit her lip, her gaze flickering between me and Selena before finally speaking.

"I know I asked this before, but what happened after you two fell?" Her voice was gentle but filled with concern. She looked directly at Selena, keeping pace beside her, her steps careful as if not wanting to push too hard.

Selena's breath, which had been steady, hitched slightly. She searched her mind for the right words, but in the end, she simply let the first thought that came to her escape.

"The Orcus Labyrinth," she said finally, her tone distant.

Aiko stumbled slightly at the sudden mention of that name. Perhaps she thought Selena was brushing her off, considering how Hajime and I had been dodging questions for the better part of the past few hours. Her voice softened.

"I see… What about it?"

I hadn't realized how much tension had built up in my body until that moment. My jaw clenched on its own, a subconscious reaction to memories I had tried to keep buried. The words that followed came from somewhere raw, a place I had been avoiding.

Selena's voice was quieter now, almost hesitant. "For a while, when we were in the pit of hell, Hajime and I were separated. At first, I was fine, but I guess I didn't realize how much of myself I left down there. I thought I could handle anything, and I did. But my own thoughts kept eating at me. Just when I thought I was going to break, Hajime was there to pick me up."

She trailed off, her words carrying the weight of emotions she hadn't confronted in a long time. The scar she had barely acknowledged until now.

Aiko watched her closely, her usual teacher-like presence taking over. Her exhaustion seemed to momentarily fade as she turned her full attention to Selena, her voice filled with quiet understanding.

"Selena, that kind of fear doesn't just disappear overnight. If you ever want to talk more about it, my door is always open. We can sit down at the inn later, just the two of us."

I glanced around, realizing that everyone had slowed down. Hajime, Yue, and Shea had all adjusted their pace just to listen.

"It's not all bad, though," I added quickly, hoping to lighten the mood. "Traveling with Hajime has been a blast." I let out a chuckle, prompting a few laughs from Hajime, Yue, and Shea.

Shea, never missing an opportunity, suddenly declared loudly, "Just you wait, Selena! One day, I'll be in the bedroom with Hajime!"

Bang!

Shea's head throbbed as Hajime shot her a glare, watching as she rubbed her forehead after being swiftly knocked down. You were grateful to Shea for taking the attention from yourself.

"When hell freezes over!!" he snapped, crossing his arms. Yue tugged on Hajime's sleeve, and they exchanged silent glances again, seemingly lost in their own little world.

Laughter echoed around us, breaking the tension that had settled in the air moments before. It was almost comforting, the way the group interacted—like a strange, dysfunctional family.

Eventually, we reached a river flowing down the mountain. Hajime took one look at it and declared, "All right, we'll rest here." He walked over to a tree and leaned against it, arms crossed.

"Haha, you guys are monsters," Akito muttered, shaking his head.

"Yeah, haha, bro," Noboru chimed in, equally exhausted.

Aiko let me drag her for the last stretch since she was clearly struggling to keep up.

"You boys just need to work out more," Yuka teased, though she was panting herself.

"I don't know, Yuka, my legs feel like jelly…" Taeko groaned.

I sighed, stretching. "All you need is a morning workout routine. I could help," I pointed to myself dramatically. "You guys are 'heroes'. So you need to act the part."

The group chuckled as they sat by the stream, catching their breath. I was about to take a drink when something caught Hajime's attention. He turn his head looking further up the mountain

"Aaa, come on!" Nana groaned.

Aiko furrowed her brows. "What is it?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern.

"Upstream, not too far from here…" Hajime said slowly, narrowing his eyes. "It looks like this stream was made recently."

Hajime was already on the move, heading up the stream to find its source. Without hesitation, I followed suit. Aiko and the others groaned but forced themselves to get up and trail after us, dragging their weary bodies forward.

It wasn't long before we stumbled upon what looked like a battlefield. The ground was scorched, deep scars running through the dirt where powerful attacks had once landed.

"Oh my god… what happened?" Aiko whispered, her eyes scanning the destruction in horror.

Hajime walked forward, kneeling down to pick up a broken sword. He lifted it slowly, only for it to crumble apart in his hands the moment he tried to examine it.

"Whatever happened here… it wasn't that long ago," he muttered, his expression darkening.

Silence hung between us as we all took in the eerie sight. Something had gone down here—and seems to be over. To all but Selena who knew it was just getting started.

"This must be the adventurer's equipment that we were looking for." Shea says will looking at a shield nearby.

Hajime looks around them and notes the destruction before standing back up.

"From the looks of it, they were heading towards the river. I will send my Ornises to scout ahead and find any further hints of them." He then starts to head in the direction of destruction. Yue, Shea, and myself followed right behind him.

The Aiko Defense Squad looked at each other before shrugging and following after us.

As they get closer to the river, the destruction became worse. Trees broken or burned, multiple craters, and even huge furrows in the earth diverting part of the river into a new one.

Hajime walked closer to a muddy print that was in the ground and kneeled next to it.

"Whatever they were fighting must have been a huge monster. Possibly one that walks on two legs… But it couldn't be any of the Bulltauros that roam here by the way the ground was cut through…"

I walked up to Hajime and leaned on his shoulder. "Now, do you think they went upstream or downstream?"

He shoves me off him before standing and looks at the river. "Well, the traces of battle make it seem like they went upstream… but it wouldn't make sense to go that way if they were tired. It would make more sense if they let the river take them to help them escape." He reasoned after taking into account what he was seeing and what he has seen from most normal people he dealt with.

"Let's get going then Hajime!" Shea excitedly said, pulling Hajime downstream. I couldn't help but chuckle in amusement at the excitable bunny.

"Come on guys, we need to follow them!" Yuka said, deciding to take charge to go after the duo that was getting further away from them.

Eventually the group reached a cliff that the river made another waterfall at. Our quartet of 'monsters' easily jumped off from the cliff and nimbly landed on the rock at the bottom. The moment that we stood up, both Hajime and my [Sense Presence] detected something.

"Wha…! No way…" Hajime was left flabbergasted at what he sensed.

"UMMMMM guys, how do we get down???!!!" Aiko was screaming down at our group.

"Mmm?" Hajime took a moment to think, and with a smile, "just jump!!!" He bellowed out!

"HE'S CRAZY, ATSUSHI! There's no way we can live that drop." Akito freaked out.

After a while we manage to help get Aiko and the other girls down. I helped the guys jump hehe much to their dismay. Safe to say they never look ogling me again since now they could only remember me pushing them off. Yue used wind magic to break their falls and I carried Aiko down. All the while Hajime was annoyed and had to wait.

After calming down a bit, Aiko turns to Hajime, "So, is there something wrong with the waterfall?"

"I detected a single living person in that direction," he explains while pointing at said waterfall.

I leaned over to Yue and whispered to her, "Hey, if you split the waterfall, I bet he would reward you."

Yue turns and stares at me with a blank stare before giving me a thumbs up before raising her right hand and used her magic.

"Liquid Rampart. Wind Wall."

The waterfall split down the middle while the wall kept the resulting spray from soaking us. Aiko and the students were slack jawed as Yue casted two different spells without any incantations or magic circles.

"Oh my god is she a god?" The students said, clearly the day's event was eating at their sanity.

"Hurry up, she doesn't have infinite mana" Hajime snapped, not wanting to wait any longer.

They all went in but I just watched. Hajime turned to look at me, his eyes asking the question.

"Go on, I think we have an uninvited company coming. I will take care of them."

Hajime nodded and wasted no more time. Just as Hajime disappeared into the hidden cave, Yue's magic released the waterfall, allowing it to cascade down once again, sealing off the entrance. The roaring water crashed against the rocks below, drowning out all other sounds.

A slight shift in the air caught my attention. She turned her head toward the sky, her golden eyes narrowing as she activated [Far Sight], a skill that enhanced her sight far beyond normal capabilities. Even then, she barely managed to make out a small dot soaring through the sky, emerging from the second mountain pass and heading directly toward the waterfall.

"Hmm… I wonder if, in her dragon form, she can see that far naturally?"

It was a question for later. Right now, I needed to act. I doubted I could solve this problem without her input, but time wasn't on our side.

Taking a deep breath, I channeled my magic. Gravity shifted around me as I lightened my body, reducing my weight to almost nothing. Then, with a single push, I launched myself into the air. The force of my jump sent the ground cracking beneath me, and with the help of [Air Step], I propelled myself higher and higher, quickly closing the distance between myself and the incoming dragon. With each consecutive jump I make, I can hear the sound of the "platform" break when I kick off of it.

'Tsk, I need to master this skill more. I don't think it was supposed to break that easily.'

The massive beast locked eyes with me for a brief moment, its reptilian gaze cold and indifferent. Then, as if deeming me unworthy of its attention, it turned away, continuing its steady approach toward the waterfall.

"Hmph."

I cracked my neck, rolling my shoulders as I steadied my breathing. There were still a few moments before she reached her destination.

"I'm not exactly an expert in gravity magic yet... but I guess I'll have to give it the old college try."

A smirk tugged at the corner of my lips as I chuckled at my own joke. Not that anyone would ever consider stopping a dragon by sheer weight alone. That idea was either pure genius… or outright insanity.

I leaped once more, this time far above the black dragon, watching as it circled the waterfall, waiting for its target to appear. It had chosen to ignore me.

Big mistake.

Pouring a significant amount of mana into my spell, I increased my weight drastically, my body becoming as heavy as a boulder. With gravity working in my favor, I plummeted toward the dragon's path, aiming for direct impact. I had no idea how much force it would take to bring this beast crashing down, so I didn't hold back. At the last moment, I activated [Steel Leg], reinforcing my limbs for the inevitable collision.

This was the best plan I could come up with—one that didn't waste time keeping me airborne, where I was at a disadvantage.

The moment my body slammed into the dragon's back, its massive frame jerked downward, its wings faltering as it lost all ability to stay aloft.

"RRRRROOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAA" A deafening roar erupted from its throat as we both plummeted toward the ground at terrifying speed.

And then, as I hurtled toward the earth, a thought struck me.

'Wait… why didn't I just freeze her wings?'

Before I could curse my own stupidity, everything went black.

When consciousness returned, the first thing I felt was pain—sharp, searing pain radiating from my legs. My head was spinning, my thoughts sluggish as I struggled to piece together what had happened. Blinking rapidly, I forced myself to focus, ignoring the throbbing ache in my skull.

I was lying in a massive crater, the ground beneath me shattered from the impact. Groaning, I attempted to move and immediately regretted it. My legs… they were broken.

Damn it.

Forcing myself to concentrate, I activated [Healing Conversion], directing all my energy toward mending the fractures. Slowly, warmth spread through my limbs, dulling the pain as the bones began to knit themselves back together.

A deep, guttural growl made my breath hitch.

Lifting my gaze, I spotted the black dragon stirring, its massive body shifting as it too regained consciousness. Its fierce golden eyes snapped open, locking onto something in the distance. I followed its gaze and saw the waterfall, still standing strong, not too far from the devastation we had left in our wake.

The battle wasn't over yet.

I exhaled sharply, bracing myself as I pushed off the ground. My legs trembled but held steady.

"Round two, huh?"

A smirk formed on my lips as I readied myself for whatever came next.

The moment Selena locked eyes with the massive dragon, her blood surged with exhilaration. Without hesitation, she rushed forward, her hands weaving intricate patterns as she unleashed a barrage of ice attacks. Shards of frost and razor-sharp icicles shot toward the beast, one striking the ridge of its back. The dragon roared in fury, its golden eyes finally turning to face her, the challenge accepted.

Selena clenched her jaw, determination burning in her chest. 'I have to prove myself. I need them to see that I'm strong, that I belong here.' But more than that, she wanted to impress Tio. She knew the dragoness only respected strength, and if she had any hope of being seen as more than just another fighter, she needed to prove herself worthy. This was more than just a battle; it was a declaration.

With a deep inhale, the dragon's chest expanded before it released a torrent of fire, the heat of its breath consuming the very air. But instead of fear, Selena's lips curled into a wide grin. She welcomed the thrill of battle. The clash of elements captured the attention of everyone in the cave, a spectacle of fire and ice that sent a thick fog billowing across the battlefield as their attacks collided.

As the mist obscured vision, Selena was already moving, her mind calculating her next strike. When the smoke cleared, she stood atop a massive beam of ice—her makeshift barrier against the flames. The gathered onlookers gasped as they noticed something remarkable—Selena was pulling water from a nearby underground lake, the moisture rapidly freezing under her command. The river and pools scattered throughout the cavern were turning to ice, supplying her with a limitless arsenal of attacks. The water rippled and surged toward her, shifting into countless deadly forms before launching at the dragon.

Without missing a beat, she drew Abraxos, her firearm, and took aim, firing a volley of shots toward the dragon.

Soon after hearing a boom and the earth trembled, the party made their way outside only to see something Aiko and the student would not forget.

The thunderous clash of their battle reached Hajime, Yue, Shea, and the others, the booming echoes shaking the cavern. Yuka gasped, gripping her weapon tighter as her eyes darted between the flashes of ice and fire. "Are we sure she's human? That's insane!" she blurted.

Aiko, the teacher, looked on in awe, hands pressed to her chest. "Selena… She's really fighting a dragon like it's just another opponent. Her power—her control—it's unbelievable."

Noboru swallowed nervously. "If she's this strong, what does that say about the enemies we'll have to face?"

Akito was shaking just from watching the fight since his class was Illusionist.

"I thought Hajime was kidding when he said our stats were worlds apart." Nana was hugging Yuka tightly in fear and awe watching the battle unfold. Scared by the beam clash that happened.

"I get what you mean," Yuka didn't seem down about the fight but her thoughts seem to be on something else.

Atsushi could only nod, stunned into silence.

Hajime, keeping an eye on the battle, glanced toward Aiko and the students. Wanting them to witness Selena's power firsthand, he gave Yue a nod. With a simple motion, she blew away the lingering mist, unveiling the battlefield once more.

Yue's crimson eyes narrowed as she watched Selena, an intrigued glimmer in her gaze. "She's strong," she murmured simply, though there was an edge of irritation in her tone.

Shea let out a relieved sigh before laughing. "Of course she is! I mean, she just suplexed a dragon! That was amazing!"

Yue crossed her arms, her expression turning exasperated. "She's wasting too much energy," she muttered, clearly annoyed by Selena's excessive use of power. "That's inefficient. but.."

"You see it too?" Hajime was more focused on Selena rather than the dragon.

"Yea, her eyes are spinning."

"So she's trying to put that thing in an illusion?" they seem confused since they knew she was bad with that part of her ability.

Aiko turned to Hajime, concern in her voice. "Shouldn't you step in? That's a dragon she's fighting!"

Hajime shook his head. "She hasn't even used Limit Break yet. She's not struggling."

"Aw man, Selena is just hogging all the fun," Shea looked bummed out since she wanted to fight and strut her stuff as well.

Nearby, another figure stood frozen, eyes wide in both terror and awe. Will, one of the few who had managed to escape the dragon's attack last time, was watching with bated breath. At first, his body had tensed in fear, memories of the last attack haunting him. But as he saw the massive dragon getting its attacks countered—getting beaten—his fear was slowly replaced by sheer amazement. "She's actually winning…" he whispered, his hands trembling from excitement rather than terror.

As the mist cleared, the dragon caught sight of Will and, with a fierce growl, made another attempt to take flight. Selena's eyes flashed with determination. "Not so fast!" Channeling her chakra, she summoned five ice dragons, their serpentine forms twisting through the air before launching themselves at the beast. They crashed into its wings, ice rapidly spreading over them, locking them in place. The dragon roared in frustration and unleashed a burst of wind magic, shattering most of the ice dragons. However, one managed to freeze over its left wing, forcing it to remain grounded.

Selena, never one to waste an opportunity, conjured several ice shurikens and sent them flying towards the dragon, some aimed directly at its eyes. The beast reared its head back, avoiding the projectiles before destroying the rest with its massive tail.

Selena narrows her eyes as the wind wiped from Tio's tail lash out against Selena's latest attack.

With a deep breath, she activated [Supersonic Step], her speed increasing drastically as she dashed around the dragon. Black Blade, now coated in [Triple Gale Claw] and layered on top of each other, sliced through the air, leaving thin scratches on the dragon's scales. When she finally cut deep, the dragon let out a raw roar—this time, laced with pain.

Seeing the result of her attack, Selena pumped her fist in celebration, only to be blindsided by a massive claw slamming her into the ground.

Shea flinched as the impact sent a shockwave through the cave. "Ouch… that looked like it hurt," she muttered, gripping Druken. "But she's not the type to give up."

'I think that's enough showing off for Tio and the others… I should probably end this soon.' She looked over at the group in aw but Yue had a glare as if she didn't like showboating. Selena groaned but pushed herself up. Forget her katana Selena started weaving hand signs.

With a sharp inhale, she gathered all the residual ice scattered throughout the battlefield, molding it into a towering ice golem. Unlike her previous creations, this one was sturdier, its very form reinforced by the glimmering sheen of the [Diamond Skin] ability. As the dragon unleashed a full-powered fire blast, the golem charged forward, taking the hit head-on without faltering. Then, in a display of overwhelming strength, it delivered a devastating uppercut to the dragon's jaw before Selena rushed in, wrapping her arms around the dragon's massive body. With a final burst of energy, she executed a suplex, slamming its head into the ground.

*THUD*

The Ice Golem fell on its back as its legs clasped around the lower half of the dragon, pinning it in place and preventing the tail from attacking. To the onlookers, the Golem looked almost like some kind of spider with the way it gripped on to the dragon.

Selena jumped out from an opening that she made from the Golem, landing on the dragon's back. Selena felt proud at what she had accomplished despite how tired she was feeling right now.

Just then, the dragon's head turned towards her, the golden eyes seemed to be clouded over but seemed to clear up a little bit before clouding over once again.

It was at this moment that Selena felt a weird pull, just before….
