Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Look. When I wished for my life to get more interesting this is NOT what I had in mind.

And now, a few subtle warnings. If you, in the course of reading this, begin to see tiny sparkles in front of you- or feel your fingers tingling, or begin to think the words 'spell', or 'book' or 'spell book', then please, for the love of all things beautiful PUT THE BOOK DOWN.

Are you still reading? Can't say I didn't warn you then.

So, here's how it goes.

My name is Akane. Akane River. No, I am not Japanese, my name is Akane simply because of the color of my eyes. I never gave it much thought. You know, except as a joke. That is, till that day of course.

I attend a special school. For kids who need special care. Not the good kind of special by the way. The bad special. It's called Denver. Denver Correctional Facility. Yes, apparently, I am in need of correction.

Mom said it wasn't going to be for long. Of course, this was before she disappeared, and I still had hope in the world...

"Don't worry Akane. I'll come and get you as soon as the term ends."

Yea well, Term ends tomorrow, and still no sign of mom.

Thats when my eyes started hurting. As in, real, really bad. The type of bad that makes you start thinking of doctors.

"Oh d*ng it", I mumbled.

Yea I know, I should have really gone to see a nurse or something. But almost as soon as it started, it stopped. My eyes were perfectly normal again. Odd? Meh. Whatever.

Looking back at this now, I really wish I had left the class at that time. I was standing at the back of the class as per usual so as not to attract attention, when I saw the weirdest thing in ever. Actually, I should say things. More like people.

Everyone in my class was suddenly engulfed in multiple-colored flames. And so, I screamed.

"Now really," my teacher tutted (Why wasn't she withering in pain?), "Miss. River, what is so important that you would scream in the middle of our comprehension?"

"Yo- you. Aren't you guys in pain? You're literally burning in green flames!", I screamed, ducking under my table.

And as if, the situation wasn't bad enough, the kids started laughing. How much pain do you have to be in to start laughing? The flames flickered for about a minute before going out completely. But the kids didn't stop laughing.

"Bu- but... the fire. You guys where all on fire!"

"That is enough Miss. River. Get out of my class right this instant!", My teacher yelled.

"But ma'am! Thats completely unfair, you guys where rea-"

"I said this instant!"

And I had to endure walking out of the class in shame while the other kids laughed at my back.

"And take out those contact lenses as well", she called after me. What lenses. Whatever.

I shouldered my bag and set off to the dorms, wondering what school I could possib ly be accepted in now. I'm already on probation, if she reports me for this I'm out. Ah well.

You wouldn't believe what happened that moment.

It started small. As I walked, I began to hear a sound. Like drums. Dun- dun- dun. But then they got louder, before I knew it the sound was deafening. I only had about enough time to think, oh sh*t, before the whole hallway blew up.

It was horrible.

The thing was hideous, it did not have six eyes, or three heads. Its two eyes where popping out of its head and- and bloodied. Its arms where to long for its body and dragged after it. The things skin was severed and peeling of in places. Looking at it made me want to vomit.

It made a swipe. You can imagine how that looked, its gigantic hand swung in the air right above me, giving me mega goosebumps and shattering a glass cabinet behind me. The impact of it knocked me off my feet.

It was going to finish me off.

Was being the operative word.

Just as it raised its disgusting foot to most likely kick me, I was once again knocked away.

"AKANE. USE YOUR FEET AND RUN!"

No need to tell me twice.

I got up and took of running.
