Damien's forehead puckered.
Something about his tone, a desperate edge beneath the command, made Damien nod curtly.
For a sliver of a second, their eyes met. Shock painted Skai's face as Jared's gaze flickered to her.
Skai thought she saw a flicker of something else in Jared's gaze — pain, a plea, maybe even fear, a fleeting emotion crossed his features. Then it was gone, hardening into a steely glint.
Jared ripped his attention away, his voice laced with urgency. "What are you waiting for? Now!"
For the first time, Skai witnessed Jared bark an order at Damien, and to her surprise, Damien obeyed without question.
He pivoted towards her, his face grim. Before she could protest, he scooped her up effortlessly, his touch surprisingly gentle despite the urgency in his movements.
A startled yelp escaped her lips as Damien dashed away.
