Chapter 34 - Sending Off a Beggar

When Zhou Shan heard what Xia Zhi had said, he responded automatically with "No, we...Oh."

Sun Chuan put his hand over his mouth before Zhou Shan could finish. Then, Sun Chuan quickly said, "Let's go, let's go!"

Sun Chuan then grabbed Zhou Shan in one hand and the nurse in the other before bolting out of the morgue.

This made Zhang Xi chuckle. "Your pals don't seem too concerned about you. It's okay if they leave, though. When you take one look at them, you know they're no threat. You're unique, though. Even if you leave this time, we'll find a way to capture you."

Xia Zhi's eyes widened in surprise at Zhang Xi's unexpected statement.

Zhang Xi and Zhang Meng saw Xia Zhi's face and burst out laughing, saying, "We love to see people trembling in fear."

After a moment of silence, Xia Zhi shook her head and said, "You've misunderstood. I'm not afraid of you. I'm just surprised that you have such good taste. Just by seeing me for a few minutes, you have already determined that I am the most capable person in the crowd."

They were both taken aback when they heard this.

Xia Zhi didn't wait for them to come to their senses; she strutted ahead confidently. When they remained frozen, she shouted at them, "Are you still going to arrest me and take me to the police station? If you don't leave now, the sky will turn dark!"

Both Zhang Xi and Zhang Meng were at a loss for words.

Upon Xia Zhi's arrival at the police station, Zhang Meng took her to the interrogation room. "As long as you don't say that the girl died of a heart attack and insist that she died of bread, we'll let you out and give you 100,000 dollars."

"I wasn't sure if you had a part to play in this, but you just confirmed your own involvement."

After a pause, Xia Zhi continued, "Is this what you paid her parents too?"

Zhang Meng's face darkened. He didn't expect her to be such a tricky opponent. He was tried of playing mind games, so he said directly, "What if that's the case? First, you need the strength to get out of here. Then, you'll need hard evidence!"

Zhang Meng paused for a few weary breaths after saying this, then continued, "Think about it carefully here. I'll be back later, and hopefully, you'll have an answer for me then."

For the rest of his interrogation, Xia Zhi remained seated in the chair provided. Outside, a number of people were keeping an eye on her.

Several hours later, a proud Zhang Meng asked, "How does it feel to be locked up for so long?"

"It's pretty good," Xia Zhi yawned, opening her eyes lazily. "I can't remember the last time I was this relaxed. It's a nice change of pace."

This was an unexpected response for Zhang Meng. He was so angry that he could not sit still. He slammed the table hard and said angrily, "Heh, since you like to stay here, then stay here!"

After saying that, Zhang Meng turned around and left.

After Zhang Meng left, Xia Zhi's eyes became clearer. She said to a young policeman outside, "Even prime suspects can go to the bathroom, right?"

"Sure, sure." The young police officer quickly opened the door.

On the way to the bathroom, she had to be accompanied by a police officer, so the young police officer followed behind her.

When Xia Zhi saw this, she slowly asked, "I just noticed that you all seem to be quite afraid of Zhang Meng."

The young policeman was stunned for a moment. After a few seconds, he said gloomily, "Yes, he got in through his family connections. He often bullies us new police officers, especially those who refuse to flatter him."

Xia Zhi nodded in understanding. At the same time, she did not forget to ask, "Then do you know who's behind him?"

"I don't know the details. I only know that it seems to be a food company." After the young policeman said this, he thought that Xia Zhi was afraid of Zhang Meng's connections, so he comforted her. "Don't worry. Zhang Meng can't hold you here for long. A high-ranking officer is making his rounds today."
