A little boy, no older than seven years old was hiding in the last place anyone would think of searching for him. A library, the place that no boy of his age would ever step foot inside, was the place the young boy choose to hide from his parents. As for why he run away from home, well let's just say that an unfortunate event took place, almost killing the boy's mother and injuring his father quite badly forcing the boy to take this desperate decision. He tried to find an excuse, to lie to himself, but his actions would always remain in his mind, always making him remember how he injured his parents that had always loved him.
For Thomas, that incident would always remain his fault, but the truth was from what the young boy thought was. Many people that live normal lives don't know about another side of the world, a secret part, mostly hidden from mundane eyes and only a few people of extremely high importance know of its existence.
Yet despite being scared and fearing that he might have hurt his parents, Thomas in that desperate state of his choice actually research what he had just done in a library. After all, what he did was nothing short of fantasy for the young boy and maybe if he knows what he did, he might just fix the damage he had done to his parents.
As for what he did… Thomas alongside his parents was visiting the local zoo, mostly because Jonathan Grayson, Thomas's father was part of the staff and had free tickets for his family. Nevertheless, Thomas was actually enjoying his time with his parents when they got close to the reptiles section. While this was far from being his first visit to the zoo, Thomas was still cautious of walking inside this particular section thanks to a past incident where he stumbled across a water snake while he was playing outside, almost giving the young a heart attack.
However, despite how scared he was of snakes and other big reptiles, Thomas walked forward, keeping his chin trying to act as brave as an eight year could. Nevertheless, watching their son trying to act so brave brought a smile to his parents, who were slowly walking behind him. The family took their time looking at each and every single reptile, while Jonathan was telling some facts and interests things to his son about these creatures, and after half an hour, the trio stops in front of the only place Jon would have rather not had his son anywhere near. While nonexistent in England, the zoo still managed to get its hands on a pair of cape cobras, one of the most venomous snakes that Jon had worked with and the only species he actually fear working with.
Meanwhile, Thomas was standing in front of the big glass window watching in amazement the royal-looking snake that seemed to look back at the boy. For a second Jon could swear that the snake look around before it slowly dragged its body toward the glass, stopping just a few centimeters away from the glass. The cobra then raised its body trying to scare away the boy, only for the boy to let out a giggle finding the snake amusing. Contrary to what his parents thought would happen, their little ray of sunshine didn't get scared by the cobra, instead, he seemed to have found the snake amusing, making both of them smile at their son.
All of a sudden, leaned forward Thomas, seemly wanting to take a closer look at the cobra when the whole glass shattered sending shards in all directions. Some people that were close by got hit by those shards, but for the young boy that wasn't what made him freeze, not even close. His dear mother, the only woman that had taken care of him was now on the floor, leading as a shard made its way in her neck, while his father was desperately trying to keep his wife alive, despite his own injuries. Before anyone could even react, the young boy felt his tears running down his cheeks before running away, fearing that he had become a mother murderer.
Remembering how he got into this situation, made Thomas shiver in fear before he tried to move his tired body toward the shelves. He just finished his last year of kindergarten and despite his age, Thomas was still a little short for his age, taking after his mother. Therefore, because of his size, he had always been made fun of by the rest of the kids and thus the young boy learned to read to forget about those mean kids. The more books he read the more he found out that he could escape those problems in his favorite books. And yet what happened today made the boy question everything he thought was just fiction.
'Maybe I could find a way to heal mommy.'
Thomas thought as he wandered through the rows of bookshelves, trying hard to find an excuse for what happened back at the zoo. Because of that, Thomas decided to go deeper into the library than he had before ever gone. Once he reach a rather "abandoned" row, Thomas noticed that some of the books that were on the shelves looked both old and fragile, but for some reason, he felt at peace near them as if something was pulling him towards them. Just as he was about to carefully grab one of the books, a sudden movement inside his sleeve made the boy freeze. A few seconds later a familiar head poke out of his sleeve draining all of the colors from the boy's face, as he looked down at the same snake he had seen back at the zoo.
Due to his shock and fear, the boy took a few steps back trying desperately to shake off the snake from beneath his sleeve, when he fell back and landed hard on the ground. For a second he forgot about the snake, looked to his side, and saw in the dim light that there was a drawer-like cache similar to the nightstand. Grabbing the drawer, Thomas found a book, older covered in some strange-looking leather with chains all over it and a small yet strange-looking lock in the middle.
Just as he was about to take a closer look at the book, the cobra that was still inside his sleeve, poke its head once again taking a closer look at the book as well, scaring the boy once more.
"Get off me!"
"Piss off young humanlet. I need to see this."
Thomas glanced at the snake in shock, not because it coiled around his arm, but because he actually understood the snake. When the snake realized that the young boy wasn't moving anymore, it raise his head and glanced at the boy only to find a confused yet shocked look on the boy's face.
"Humanlets these days. They freeze when I show them my royal beauty."
Meanwhile, the boy's eyes went wider and wider the more the snake spoke, but before the snake could say another word, Thomas looked right at the cobra before he slowly moved his other arm towards it.
"Y-you ca-n talk?"
Before the snake could respond, Thomas's other hand grabbed the old book and almost smack the snake with it when the cobra launched itself forward going inside the boy's shirt. Right as Thomas was having a second mental breakdown, the cobra's head poke out before cursing the boy.
"Oi, you stupid humanlet! What in the bloody Thursday were you about to do?"
Since he could understand the snake, Thomas lowered the book before letting out a sigh, finally realizing that he couldn't win against the cobra.
"How can you speak? "
"Speak? I can't speak your human language. You are the one who is speaking my language, you stupid humanlet."
Thomas stared back at the snake, not understanding what the snake was trying to say. How could he, a human boy speak the language of snakes?
'No that must be some sort of trick, the same kind that injured my parents. Maybe I could fool this snake and prove that he's the one that did that.'
"You are lying! You were the one who made the glass go boom."
"Foolish humanlet! How could I, the great Mars injure a human that came to watch my beauty? It was you, you bloody untrained wand lover doing your mumbo jumbo that destroyed my home!"
Hearing what the snake just said, Thomas entire body went stiff before he slowly looked down at his own hands, fearing that he would once again destroy something hurting even more people. Before Mars could say anything to the boy, Thomas hugged his knees and start crying silently as he finally realized what he had done.
