Chapter 4 - Encounter

NARRATOR.

Samuel and Andre continued on their way not knowing where they were going or what they were going to do.

they just wanted to find shelter anywhere.

the sun was setting, and the golden red hue brought the recent memory of the burning plantation to their minds.

"You know I really didn't expect us to do this till completion-- I mean we burned the whole farmland to the ground-- we must've maddened them" Andre started the conversation.

"No, we didn't, all we did was only an annoyance to them at best." Samuel refuted.

"How come?" Andre asked while tilting his head as if that would make him cuter, but he was filthier than the mud he was walking on.

"Well basically the plantation we were on wasn't even third-grade, it was a fifth-grade plantation, the grumunds really won't even look for the reason the fire started thoroughly, and they will assume it was a malfunction." Samuel explained thoroughly.

"But because of you they now know it happened because of the slaves." Samuel looked at Andre mockingly.

"Firstly, it wasn't my fault they saw me just try to be in my shoes." Andre rebutted.

"Secondly, does that mean they are going to track us down??" Andre queried with fright in his two eyes.

"No, they won't tire themselves out on two slaves like us when they have got that much fixing to do at the plantation, but they will be extremely strict on the other slaves in there."

"Strict by how much?"

" Well to start off they will have lower rations of food, the guards will torture them for fun, half of them will die within the next 6 months and things like that." Samuel said nonchalantly as he was walking through the mud.

But these words were like an arrow aimed at Andre's heart.

he stopped moving trying to process the weight of what he has done.

" What are you waiting for what has been done has been done, just crying, blanking out and wailing will change nothing." Samuel looked over his shoulder back at the boy with an uncaring look.

" You are right we should think about the now in the future we will save them." Andre had a gleaming look in his eyes it was clear that he was hopeful that he will save them.

"Tsk, just stop the meaningless blabber and hurry up we need to find somewhere to sleep this night." Samuel ordered and Andre immediately followed his order.

ANDRE.

well, we really need somewhere to sleep this night, but I would be thankful for you-- Samuel -- if you helped me walk, I have a broken shin goddamn it.

I used the trees and a stick I found in order to help me in my motion.

We have been walking all day and I feel as if I am going to pass out, but I must keep on moving.

This was the first time I came out of the farm, so I could be considered a free man.

Although Samuel doesn't acknowledge that for two reasons firstly, because I am not a man, I am a 10-year-old boy.

Secondly, he says that we are not free yet and that freedom is still not in our grasp.

I would love to know his definition of freedom, but I don't think now would be a good time to ask.

Just look at his face he is clearly not in the mood for small talk.

I continued looking around hoping to find something useful...and then it rained...darn it.

we had no shelter, and no way to warm ourselves.

the cloth bag that Samuel kept the food in soaked in the torrential rain.

"This damn downpour!" Samuel yelled in extreme annoyance.

" What is a downpour?" I asked curiously.

" Another word for rain. I heard it from an elderly guard once before at the farm." Samuel translated it into words I can understand.

"Ok stop." Samuel said.

I stopped and asked why.

" Well now we can't risk walking in such heavy rain, what if one of us slides down and falls prey for other creatures or even falls on a stone and dies?" Samuel argued.

" Well, that is reasonable let's settle under one of the trees around he--" a heavy galloping sound came from the back accompanied by a loud whip sound.

No, don't tell me they found us.

No how could they??.

We did everything we could how could they find us??.

what will happen to us???.

We are going to be tortured right?.

We are going to die right??.

We are going---.

The loud sound of the cart passing by woke me up from my habit.

" Hey! Hey! HEY! STOP SLOW DOWN!" Samuel called to the cart and shouted all he could...

..and the cart stopped.

why would he do that??.

" hey what are you doing?" I tried calling him but he went immediately to the cart.

I drew closer in order to see what will happen.

" hey look man me and my little brother here need to get to the nearest village from here but we have no way and as you can see this rain might just cause my little brother to pass out." Samuel said in a pleading tone.

he searched the cloth bag and took out a silver dalis.

" I will even pay you." he said with confidence.

" nah there is no need young man I understand your situation come on hop in the back." the old man leading the cart offered.

" No I demand that you take this for your kindness." Samuel told the man, but the man refused again.

" Just hop inside, I will take you to Ettor village there you can continue your journey however you please." the man laughed a kind-hearted laugh.

" Thank you." Samuel bowed.

" Come on Andre." I jumped into the back of the cart. the feeling of sitting down after all of this time and finally have a rest made sleep attack me, and I couldn't dodge its attack and so I surrendered to it.

*********

it was a miracle that we found a cart passing by in the rain.

In fact, even if we found one when it was sunny, they wouldn't let us in because of how filthy and dirty we appeared.

Suddenly, Andre's head fell on my lap.

I couldn't help but chuckle when I remembered that I called him " my little brother" subconsciously.

I better rest now and have some quality sleep in order to be ready when we reach the village.

I thought about what transpired through the last three days and tried to see if we made any mistakes by any chance, and in the middle of doing that sleep seduced me and I couldn't resist its seduction.

I fell asleep.

sleep truly is a bliss.
