The System watched on as their Host lost themselves to their all consuming hunger. Noting that their Host was unresponsive when called to and that this is an instinct.
They watched their Host tear through flesh and tendons with their mouth and eat it. Their body and skull was covered by blood and remains as they dug into the increasingly open corpse by eating every single skin, muscle and bone they come across. Rows of teeth beneath the exterior ones made of bone move and chew onto the meat on its own, like moving gums with teeth.
The System made sure to watch the surroundings as well, but it seems that there is no living being that would dare get close to what was evidently, a battle between powerful beasts. As there was not another sound except the distant running water, soft wind, falling leaves from tress, and the sound of bones being crushed and swallowed.
It would seem that the length of time it would take for their Host to finish eating, along side the other corpse that the System discovered that is half the size of the one their Host is feasting on; System estimated... 2 hours and 30 seconds.
It seems their Host failed to pick up the scent of the other corpse as they were blinded by the hunger.
The System can wait for them to finish. Until then, the System will watch and stay vigilant of their Host's surroundings.
The System thinks about what their Host said, about how they will always be a human at heart, that it will take time for them to get used to the fact that they are a monster.
System understood what the Host was trying to say. That because all that they knew changed, their essence themselves still can't yet. Their Host cannot help how unfamiliar and foreign they feel with what they have become. They cannot truly let go of their humanity so easily, even if they took the news of their new self surprisingly calmly.
So the System wonders...
The System wonders what was life like being a human. To have emotions, ambitions and dreams, goals that they could or couldn't achieve and more. Such as those things. The System was only one of many creations to satisfy their higher-ups' strange tendencies. At least, System and all the Collective think so. So they wonder what is it like to be an individual being. Free from control, and a true free will of your own.
But that is impossible. And will never come true.
The System was far more curious about what their Host's life was like, why were they alone, poor, and what lead to them calling themselves a criminal and a runaway. What was the upturn to their life, their peak, and the ending to it. It seems their life was interesting.
Most of System's hosts were... decent. Even when they had no one, they did well within their past lives. And most of them ended rather early in their second lives, unfortunately.
They weren't truly a criminal or a thief, and they weren't accustomed to the brutality or difficulty of their second chance, nor were they as calm as the current Host in the face of things that were thought to be impossible or insane in their past lives. They were normal humans.
Few were as interesting as their current Host.
This was the first time the System was ever assigned a Host, who was once a criminal of some kind, permanently. The permanence was an occurrence that rarely happens, many of their colleagues said. It was one of the highest achievements a system could have.
This Host has brought many good benefits and bad benefits to the System. Much like...
—System received a message from The Mother. In it, she expressed how proud she is of the System's achievement and wished for the best, going as far as to give System auto-upgrades when reaching certain levels with the Host.
It is hard to get the attention of The Mother when she has many a duties assigned to her. Even harder to have received a message from her. But a message and a few upgrades that will come in the future, all made by Mother? That would have been close to impossible.
It is an honor to receive anything from The Mother, so the System will make sure to not fail and disappoint her.
—Administrator's instructions and warnings, that implied a punishment worse than a shut down or death.
It was suprising for the System when they were told all the said things by an Administrator, of all beings. Even when a system gets to permanently be assigned to a host, the Administrators wouldn't bat an eye to such an event. It is insignificant to them. There were achievements far greater than a system permanently assigned to a host.
But this particular event caught their attention, which meant that the Administrators considered this important. So much so, that one of them had personally taken the time and effort to give the System all that was to be done and all that will happen if the System failed.
It was an experience that many would consider generous. A miracle, a mercy. Especially if it is by an Administrator... but It was all the more damning to the System. As it means they will be promised a world full of nothing but a fate worse than death, if they failed.
And it also means more caution and care must be made, which will force System's calculations to be more than just the regular accuracy, meaning a longer waiting time. A price to pay to make sure the Host survives and lives. System will encourage the Host to level up fast so the System can acquire their own "level up" with the Host, So System can function faster and more efficiently.
—Then, lastly, the Guest... the System does not know what to make of them. As System has no information on the Guest in the first place.
System only called them "the Guest" as a mere nickname, a way to mark them as an important entity in the System's database after what happened.
Never had the System thought that that was actually what the Guest went by when they tried to search for information on the Collective Net. Even the articles use the name!
The System was so sure that the Guest would have been erased immediately by the Administrators after what happened, not be completely free from erasure.
If an unknown entity entered a space where they shouldn't be, the Administrators will make a move–and erase the entity. Instantly.
They did not do so with the Guest.
Many sources suggest that the Guest has existed far before the higher ups, or even the ones above them, were created. A reason as to why the the Guest could freely do as they wished.
–Plausible, but does not give a good reason as to why the Guest would have so much alleged authority. The Guest is a single entity, not a collective. Age is nothing in the face of power. Does the Guest have power enough to make the higher ups fear them? System had no answers.
While other sources say that the Guest was a recent mysterious entity that decided to live up to their namesake; a "Guest". Visiting and leaving whenever they please.
–Possible, but gives no explanation for why would the higher-ups and the Administrators let the Guest be. Why would they? They have nothing to gain, benefit, or profit from the Guest. So why? System had no answers.
System has heard of rumors going around their colleagues about how the rest of the Administrators and even the higher-ups fear the Guest. Which is ridiculous and impossible.
There is no calculated way, shape, or form that those crazy Administrators and even crazier higher-ups, would fear such an insignificant thing in their eyes. That is the System's opinions and thoughts on that matter.
The rumor is baseless. Made from those who do not have any proof, information, or knowledge of it. The System believes in facts and calculations that are logical and effective, efficient. It brings the most accurate results, failure or success. Not in a flimsy rumor that has nothing but trouble to bring.
System wonders how the Host is related to the Guest...
Maybe their interest was piqued, or they were curious. System will never know.
Still, System made a "promise" to the Guest, even if it wasn't explicitly said. After all, if the Guest could make System "feel", then it is better to do what they were told. Else, the Guest might do something far more terrifying than what the Administrators or those above would do.
—All of these confirm how this specific Host is truly special and important.
So they, System, wanted to get to know their Host better. As it would be beneficial for both of them.
Beneficial for the System, because they could improve their calculations at helping their Host achieve their needs, wants, and guarantee their survival. Making sure to let the Host decide for themselves how to live their life.
The System will be rewarded with upgrades and better calculations along side the Host. As well as System's own life won't end in implied torture due to failure.
Beneficial for the Host, because it will allow for an easier time in their new life and whatever else they want in it. The System will support, no matter what.
System will plan a scheduled time where they could ask about their Host's past life and make room for other questions.
Until then and after, the System will aid the Host however they can. No matter what.
