Chapter 23 - Lie beneath the façade

"Young master Gordon finally cancelled this engagement. Sigh… this child is really pitiful; it appears to me that she has lived her whole life in that dangerous place and now that she is going to live as Leigh, she has to go through all those condemnation for being left by a man," John shook his head disdainfully.

The old lady was lost in her deep thought but she wasn't worrying about how Leigh would face the people who were going to judge her now after breaking up with Roff but rather something else was troubling her.

She slyly glanced at john while sitting on the slab with her leg hanging outside, "Go and call Tia,".

She took the girl's real name. john was startled for a moment, he looked at the moon outside and asked, "She just left after eating with you, what is so important that you want me to bring her back. You know she is injured, right? Better let her rest for now".

The grandma sighed as she shook her head in irritation, "Just call her back, I am not in the mood either to trouble her, so don't worry".

Honestly john was worried that the old lady was going to bother the girl again about trifling stuffs but it doesn't seem to be the case so, he nodded and walked away.

A moment later, he brought the girl inside the old lady room and as he saw her face, he nodded before leaving.

Tia was wearing a loose t-shirt and shorts as her night dress that was given to her by grandma.

She sat next to grandma when the old lady whose back was facing the girl patted softly at the ground next to her.

"I thought about it and it seems quite right to tell you my girl past," anger was filling her voice.

What troubled her was the fact that this girl has asked her about the reason for the real Leigh to be hated by her own mother so badly.

They were still having dinner at that time but hearing that question, grandma turned furious and walked away without completing her meal.

But now after giving it a lot of thought, she realized that it was necessary to let this girl know the truth.

"Yes," Tia nodded and sat staring straight without any aim.

In front of them was the garden with medical herbs and various other plants.

"Iam Filin is my one and only daughter. She took after the business after her father's death. Soon she married her boyfriend and had Lily as her first-born child. Everything was ok eventually but Iam greed started to increase and at one point it knew no boundary".

"She divorced her husband to marry a rich man suitable for the rise of her company and then had two more daughters. Later catching her husband cheating, she divorced again and once again married her first husband who was innocent enough to think that his love was back to him."

"I was against her divorce and her marriage and also her remarriage to her first husband since I pitied him and from there on, we parted our ways. I no longer considered her my daughter but at the birth of her fourth child who was Leigh her husband got into an accident"

"It happened at the same day as her delivery so she threw all the blame on the child who knew nothing. Calling her bad luck or whatever, she went ahead to leave her at the orphanage but I stopped her and we again started to live together".

"Though she still didn't liked Leigh but at least with me being there she couldn't throw her away but when Leigh was five years old some misfortune happened and Iam third daughter who was playing with Leigh near the pond fell into it and later blamed it all over that innocent child"

"With that, Iam had enough excuse to kick away a five-year-old child while calling her a jinx, so I brought her at the countryside where I used to live after parting with Iam".

There was no expression on Tia face, she was just hearing everything patiently and as the old lady stopped, she swallowed.

The pain that she could see at the old lady face was bothersome because she had no idea how to comfort someone.

She scratched her neck and her lips parted to avoid the eerie silence, "Umm… I am thankful that you told me the truth".

The silence remained, surrounding the place continuously. The girl started to scratch her finger feeling awkward and nervous and wondering what to say next.

While her head was filled with 'what to say?' she suddenly uttered something bittered, "It didn't sound like Mrs. Iam loved her husband so why did she hated Leigh just because the day coincided".

Grandma eyes which were staring at front till now took a sudden sharp turn and glanced the girl who nervously averted her gaze and apologized, "I am sorry, I crossed the line just now".

"She needed someone to blame at that time for her messy marriage life more than her husband's death. Leigh was the best pray to throw all her anger on. And by putting a fake mask of a faithful believer of buddha, she notoriously turned her own daughter into a monster who ate her father life on the day of her birth".

"Even now she continues to put a façade. Famous for being a strong believer of buddha, she does all sort of disgusting thing".
