Chapter 63 - Intangible Discomfort

The caravans moved at a steady pace, drawn by a pair of magnificent bipedal creatures whose rhythmic footsteps reverberated through the air.

Above them, the sky was awash with the soft glow of dusk, a breathtaking tapestry of pink hues that seamlessly blended into the encroaching darkness, casting an ethereal light upon the landscape below.

The party found themselves traversing an expansive grassland, a verdant sea stretching out before them, devoid of any trees or other landmarks to break the monotony.

The grass that carpeted this vast plain was unlike any they had encountered before. It grew to an impressive half meter in height, each blade possessing a unique, almost mystical quality. The thick veins that ran through the grass seemed to pulse with life, their roots burrowing deep into the earth, as if drawing sustenance from some unseen source.

The air was dense and palpable, heavy with the weight of the unknown. It clung to the skin and filled the lungs, a constant reminder of the alien nature of this place. The atmosphere was both invigorating and unsettling.

Gabbi pondered deeply, his thoughts drifting in sync with the gentle rocking of the caravan. 'Over the past days, we have not faced any formidable adversaries such as the Leader of the Grove Stalkers. Instead, we have encountered only weakened or injured creatures, exhibiting erratic and uncharacteristic behavior. They are effortlessly vanquished, as if some unknown force has rendered them vulnerable.'

Gabbi gazed out of the caravan, 'As we journey across this vast landscape, the ominous Accursed Forest looms ever closer, and the increasingly peculiar environment has become a cause for concern. For reasons that remain elusive, the familiar symphony of insects and the sight of birds soaring in the sky have been conspicuously absent in recent days.'

Hugo struggled to conceal his growing unease, his face betraying his restlessness as he tapped his foot softly against the wooden floor of the caravan. Berto, once known for his fiery temper, now exuded a more rational and composed aura.

The dark skinned woman, as per her usual demeanor, appeared deep in thought, contemplating something significant. Meanwhile, Larry's weary eyes seemed to be lost in the past, as if he were sifting through the pages of his own memories.

Berto addressed the group, "This situation is far more abnormal than I could have ever imagined."

Gabbi offered a subtle nod in agreement, while Larry turned to Berto and added, "Indeed… I believe we all sense it. Throughout our journey, we have yet to cross paths with a single person, and even the indigenous creatures seem to have vanished without a trace."

Hugo interjected, his voice quivering with a hint of trepidation, "In the past, one could venture to the outskirts of the Accursed Forest without facing any consequences, as long as they didn't dare to enter its depths. But now it seems as though the forest's malevolent presence has expanded well beyond its boundaries, casting an ominous pall over the adjacent territories."

Gabbi mused to himself, 'The Accursed Forest, as I recall, is divided into three sinister layers: the Outer Depths, the Inner Depths, and the Nethermost Depths. The Queerly Word of Catastrophe lies concealed within a hidden chasm, nestled between the Lower and Inner regions.'

'The inhabitants of this malevolent woodland are a chaotic assortment of beings, ranging from the relatively weak to the terrifyingly powerful. One may encounter lowly creatures or formidable adversaries, but the most unfortunate souls will stumble upon deranged, overpowered monstrosities that defy all reason.'

Gabbi's thoughts meandered, and he found himself contemplating an inexplicable sensation. 'Somehow, I've detected an unsettling anomaly. It bears no relation to the Accursed Forest or the present party, but rather, it originates from within me. Deep in my core, I sense a heavy, frigid presence gnawing at my very essence, akin to the body's intuitive warning of impending distress. And yet, for reasons beyond my comprehension, I continue to disregard this disquieting feeling.'

Abruptly, the handler brought the caravan to a standstill, exclaiming, "Beware! An assembly of Bombina Thorn creatures is fast approaching our vicinity!"

Gabbi swiftly emerged from the caravan, his eyes scanning the landscape.

In the short distance, he spotted several monstrous, ebony skinned amphibians, each brandishing a curved sharp dagger.

Their backs were adorned with an array of menacing, razor sharp spikes, while their mouths revealed rows of jagged teeth, glistening with malice. The creatures' eyes burned with an intense, blood red hue, radiating an aura of pure malevolence.

The moment the creature caught sight of Gabbi, it pounced at him with ferocious intent.

Gabbi, however, responded with remarkable nimbleness, his feet barely shifting as he wielded his dagger with expert precision.

In a rapid succession of slashes and thrusts, he dismantled the Bombina Thorns that assailed him. Their mutilated forms collapsed to the ground, writhing and convulsing in the throes of their ultimate demise.

Upon witnessing the scene, the rest of the party sprang into action, each member assuming their designated roles.

Berto, the earth mage, unleashed a barrage of potent spells upon the encroaching adversaries. Hugo stood before Berto, acting as a bulwark against any potential harm, vigilantly safeguarding his comrade's exposed vulnerabilities.

Meanwhile, the dark skinned woman carved through the opposition with ruthless efficiency, her blade effortlessly tearing apart the Bombina Thorns creature. The air was filled with the creature's agonizing, guttural groans as it met its demise.

Simultaneously, Larry, a formidable force in his own right, dispatched the remaining adversaries with remarkable ease. Their bodies crumpled like fragile insects, succumbing to the crushing power of his mace.

In the aftermath of the confrontation with the Bombina Thorns, their lifeless bodies lay strewn across the ground.

Berto, his brow furrowed in contemplation, couldn't help but express his bewilderment at their presence. "It's truly baffling to encounter these creatures in such a setting," he mused, "especially given their well documented affinity for semi aquatic environments, isn't it?"

Hugo offered a subtle nod of agreement to Berto, his expression a mixture of exhaustion and apprehension. He released a weary sigh, his voice laced with a touch of unease, "I'm not sure what to make of it anymore."

Larry scrutinized the lifeless, ebony hued amphibians with a discerning eye, contemplating for a quite moment.

His gaze then shifted to the lead caravan, where the cacophony of battle had momentarily subsided. The members of other party, too, had become embroiled in the conflict that surrounded them.

Suddenly, a suffocating sensation enveloped him, leaving his throat arid and a frigid shudder permeating his very being.

As swiftly as it had arrived, the sensation dissipated. Shifting his gaze toward the source of this disturbance, he discovered Gabbi, clutching his mask firmly against his visage, his aura emanating wrath.

Larry studied his demeanor, realizing it was the first time he had ever witnessed such raw emotion from him.

In that fleeting moment, a lone Bombani Thorn sprang towards Gabbi, igniting a fierce protective instinct within Larry. He swiftly intercepted the menacing creature, pulverizing it beneath the weight of his mace.

Redirecting his focus to Gabbi, Larry's voice carried a hint of concern as he inquired, "How are you feeling?"

Gabbi cast a succinct, discerning glance at Larry, before responding in a tranquil voice, "I'm quite all right, Larry."

With that, he strode purposefully toward the first caravan. Larry observed Gabbi's retreating figure, wisely refraining from probing further.

Meanwhile, a mysterious, dark skinned woman surreptitiously observed Gabbi, her gaze flickering between him and the duo of Hugo and Berto, who exchanged covert signals with one another.
