Chapter 78 - Capítulo 78: Experimento

However, the human refused to die so Luna prepared for another attack, this time to the head. Unfortunately, the human dodged the blow and Luna was slammed against the ceiling due to a wall of ice that suddenly emerged under its feet.

Miriam took advantage of that moment to heal Adam and push him into the hallway.

Adam was too dazed to respond, so he could barely understand what was happening. Two healings in a row began to take a serious toll on him. He still didn't feel tired, but a horrible hunger was starting to affect his mental state, so Ivy and Tarin took over the battle.

Ivy harnessed all her energy to create a wall of darkness that she propelled towards the Breeder, in an attempt to stop it, but it seemed to ignore everything and just kept advancing towards them.

"We need to end this now. Adam doesn't have much time left and will be completely unconscious in minutes," shouted Miriam, who tried to paralyze the Breeder again. The effect was over in the blink of an eye, but it gave Ivy time to dodge an attack from that would have certainly killed her.

Luna took advantage of that moment to jump on his closest prey, which turned out to be Miguel, Miriam and Adam.

The old soldier sensed the danger, so he made the decision in a moment. He removed the pin on the grenade and then got up in time to intercept the Breeder's attack, which was aimed at the almost unconscious Adam.

Luna's claws pierced Miguel through the chest. The zombie was taken by surprise, as he expected the old human to dodge. When his attack connected easily, he was momentarily thrown out of the mental state in which he had submerged. Miguel took advantage of that instant and took a step forward, worsening his wounds. It didn't take him long to lose his strength, so he raised his hand with the grenade and threw it at the Breeder's face.

The explosion took the Breeder by surprise and it barely had time to close its eyes. Luna avoided being completely blinded, but the explosion of the grenade right next to him disfigured part of his face and knocked out half of his teeth. Miguel covered his face at the moment of the explosion, but was still propelled backwards, which managed to free him from Luna's grasp.

The zombie backed up until he hit the wall and opened his eyes, only for them to be covered by a large amount of blood.

As he recovered, he heard new voices entering the apartment at that moment. More humans? he thought, but there was no way he could deal with them in the state he was in. He had pushed his body to the limit. Right now he wasn't even regenerating energy.

All its urges to kill humans were gone. It was tired, exhausted and without any doubt, defeated. At the beginning of the attack it thought it would not be much of a problem, but now it was on the verge of death and practically no humans had died. They were few, but they were powerful and their abilities were completely different and unpredictable. If only it had known more about them from the beginning, it could have prepared itself better. It was in that instant that it realized its mistake. Had Arnold not offered this information in the beginning?

Luna paused for a moment, for at that instant the zombie was trying to get out of the room it was in and make its way outside. If only it had listened to Arnold, maybe it could have won and maybe could have managed to kill all the humans without much trouble.

Its thoughts were interrupted by the voice of Alfred, who just at that moment had spotted the Breeder.

"Attack, don't hold back!"

Alfred's team was made up of rookies, but they had already been in several battles. However, none of them were above level 5, so despite the bad state the Breeder was in, the attacks did not cause him many problems, with the exception of only one.

The bark that Alfred had obtained by adapting his body to the characteristics of a dog, managed to affect the Breeder's balance. Sonic attacks seemed to be one of its worst weaknesses. The damage was not enough to kill the Breeder, but it also can't fight.

Moments later, an orb of darkness, launched by Ivy, hit the zombie on its back, especially in a place where its plumage had been torn off. For the first time, Ivy's darkness showed its corrosive power and began to consume flesh, causing the Breeder to fall to its knees.

Under the rain of attacks, it knew that its end had probably come. Luna no longer even had the strength to get up. However, to everyone's surprise, Shadow appeared out of nowhere.

The tiny zombie had been disfigured by fire and part of its face and chest showed a horrible scar. The zombie appeared in the material world for a moment, held Luna by one arm and brought the Breeder with it into the shadow world. There he dragged the zombie along the ground until it reached a shadow that would allow them to escape.

However, bringing the Breeder with itself proved to be more difficult than dragging the humans along, so he barely made it out into the hallway and they both materialized back into the material world.

Shadow was exhausted, but mustered what little energy it had left and decided to jump back into the shadow world.

It didn't take long for Shadow and Luna to reappear in the parking lot, completely exhausted. Luna was confused, he couldn't understand why Shadow had saved him, but that didn't matter to him now, the important thing was to get away from the humans.

The tiny zombie was knocked unconscious after materializing one last time, so Luna carefully grabbed it and concentrated on getting back to the shelter. She looked at the humans' building. An army of zombies was still attacking, but their numbers were dwindling with every second. At some point, from somewhere, more humans had appeared. There were only three of them and they were weak, but they began to help those who were fighting and soon pushed the zombies back.

Luna ignored this and decided to turn back, but something it hadn't counted on got in its way. The Siamese zombie appeared in front of the Breeder. Luna looked at the zombie suspiciously, as it immediately perceived that what he was observing was not its real body, but an illusion. Luna looked away from it and searched carefully for the real one.

"We can't fool you even with those wounds, are you backing off?"

Luna simply nodded and continued searching for the other zombie.

"It's a disappointment, you're not as powerful as we expected. Maybe we should kill you and take the haven, the humans have practically done all the work for us."

The Breeder became alert at these words.

"If you think you can kill me that easily, then you're in for a surprise."

Luna knew it was a lie, but it couldn't think of anything else that would get that strange zombie off its back.

"You're lying, we can feel it. Killing you in that state is easy and our instincts tell us that if we consume your heart we'll become a Breeder."

Luna looked at the illusion again.

"Why don't you do it then? Why talk to me this way."

"Because being a Breede means being bound to a refuge and being the leader of your refuge is a waste of time. Those humans will conquer it after this failure, there aren't enough zombies in this place to contain them anymore."

Luna felt a chill, the Siamese spoke too coherently, which reminded her of Arnold's way of talking.

"What do you want?" Luna asked, sure that the Siamese had a reason for all this.

"To do an experiment. I want to know if a cornered Breeder like you can cut ties with his shelter and still live to tell about it."

"What do you mean?"

"Don't your instincts guide you to defend your property? This happens with our building and we just assumed it would be more serious in a Breeder."

Luna looked behind, toward the human shelter. Before it could respond, the Siamese spoke again.

"With my magic I have made you and Shadow invisible, no one will bother us for now."

The Breeder looked away, ashamed to admit that it felt fear towards the humans it had until recently considered his prey, but there wasn't much it could do about it, so he decided to go along with the Siamese's idea. The breeder had realized that the strange double zombie was right, when it escaped all it thought about was getting back to his shelter. But what would happen when it got there?

"I agree to help you, just tell me what to do."

"Fight against your instincts. They are our salvation, but they also impose limits on us. Try to overcome them. I will observe the result."

Luna nodded, it had done it before, but this time it knew that separating from the shelter would cost itself all its energy.

"Come on, it's time to go back. Besides, we have to pick up someone, if he's still alive." Now that Luna knew Arnold's usefulness, it wouldn't let him die or escape so easily.

"As you wish," said the Siamese before disappearing.

Luna turned to take one last look at the shelter of Nuevo Sol. It remembered the faces of all the humans and etched them in its mind. One thing it was sure of, someday it would return.
