Chapter 85 - Son of the Morning (5)

The room faded back into view. Kage stood menacingly over Bentley. The sockets for which pupils of scarlet red should be were plastered by a dull gray with little warrant in them.

Wiping his forehead, the priest leaned in his seat breathing words in front of Kage's face. "Don't toss away what you have for some sense of responsibility, or guilt! Guilt is everywhere and we can only focus on the future. Take heed of your mother, I can't- No. I WON'T allow you to throw your life away!" Father Bentley knew that his anguished cry left bits of saliva across the unwashed uniform Kage wore, forcing himself to swallow down the apology.

He did not break his gaze thus awaited the snarl of retaliation which never arrived. Instead, Kage's voice produced itself at a leveled frequency, overtly calm, but touched by the grasp of a winter chill. "My mother gave her life for me to be born into this cruel, selfish world. Next, she placed her faith in a failure of a man like you. Who then continued to fail." In the pause taken before continuing, Bentley swore he saw the etching of a cracked glimmering smile creep to the furthest regions of Kage's face. The thing stretched the skin to one more of a wheezing mutt than a human.

Truly, a spine tingling chill ran through the priest as this concept ravaged him.

"Three million dollars." Bentley blinked in confusion but just before he could mutter in disbelief, Kage cut him off. "My life is worth three million dollars. More than enough to save her life."

Raising a hand to hold Kage still, Bentley was shrugged off. "The son is bound to the sins of his parents. Oh, father, you are right. It's just a never ending cycle and I'm the next to perpetuate it spinning." Kage proceeded away from Father Bentley swiping at a stray hair clouding his sister's forehead.

For many long weeks he smelled it, studied it, and finally observed it. Afterall, it belonged to what he viewed to be his greatest self. When the voices subsided, no longer influencing his person, such moments occurred beside her. Despite the calls for maim then destruction, Kage kept sane by the thought of his sister remaining alone.

Long did he believe it to be true, that he was in fact his truest form in her presence. But even that clearly falsifiable reality had no way to last.

A monster, start to finish. Now, with this knowledge all he could do was fabricate a lasting memory of his existence.

He let go of her hair, trudging to the doorway. "KAGE! WAI-

"Don't worry… I'm not doing this out of guilt nor some responsibility. Well, perhaps the last, heh." A solemn chuckle reverberated back to Bentley causing him to clench his teeth. "It's my decision…"

Kage turned back around facing the priest in position to pounce after him if he were to leave the room. "I'll save my friend then I'll die for my sister. Don't worry… you won't be the only person to have disappointed mother." Kage fled from the room clogging his ears with either hand because if he were to hear anything from that man then he could be persuaded away.

He must remain resolute; otherwise, what would be the purpose to him ever having been born?
