Chapter 70 - Chapter 70: Parades Go By

Walking back from Kushina's, Kannin pondered the projects he had. He originally had two things he wanted to work on in the coming years, and neither of them were going to be easy. With the Flying Raijin on top, Kannin wasn't sure he'd get any of them mastered in fewer than 10 years.

The first thing that Kannin had thought of had to do with his chakra affinities. Over the war, Kannin's proficiency with Water, Lightning, and Wind Release had reached a level that he doubted few of his fellow jonin could achieve. Furthermore, the fighting style he'd developed with them, what he had called his Storm God style, was powerful, but cumbersome in that it needed Kannin to either cast three jutsus in succession, or create shadow clones to perform the jutsus simultaneously--either way, it was too slow, especially after he saw the speed of A on the battlefield.

What was Kannin's plan then? To get rid of the time issue, of course. The way he planned to do that, however, was near impossible; in fact, there was only one example of what Kannin wanted to do in the entire history of the world: a Kekkei Tota.

Kekkei Tota were like standard Kekkei Genkai, which, aside from Dojutsu and other strange types, were usually the fusion of two different nature releases. The First Hokage's Mokuton was a good example, a fusion of Earth and Water release. Kekkei Tota went one level beyond and fused three natures together. Kannin had never seen a Kekkei Genkai himself, but he had seen the destructive power of Onoki's Dust Release, which was the only Kekkei Tota anyone had heard of.

The issue, of course, was that there was a reason that only one had ever been made before. Thankfully, Kannin had spent a number of years using all three of his nature releases in tandem, so his knowledge of how they work together was quite good, but actually combining them was a whole other issue, one that Kannin estimated might take him upwards of a few years to even make a little progress.

The other project was Senjutsu. Senjutsu was a very difficult thing for the average shinobi to learn, since it usually took immense reserves of chakra to even have a hope of getting it down. Thankfully, as an Uzumaki, Kannin had access to a large amount of chakra. Senjutsu would allow Kannin to effectively double his chakra reserves, and enhance the power and speed of his body and his jutsu--all in all, it was an extremely enticing boon to any shinobi. The only issue was that it seemed very arbitrary as to who could and couldn't learn it, or even sense natural energy.

And now there was the Flying Thunder God jutsu to add onto that. Thankfully, Kannin was pretty good at learning jutsus, and with shadow clone training it shouldn't be impossible, but compounded with the other 2 major projects, he wasn't sure how fast it would go.

Kannin spent the rest of that day planning out his routine for the next while. He had no leads on how to learn Senjutsu yet, so he was splitting himself into three again, one to work on fusing his Wind, Water, and Lightning Releases, one to work on Flying Raijin, and the other to do random other things around the village. But that was going to start later, as there were a few important things to do in the meantime.

The next day came, and with it, the hooding of the Fourth Hokage. Basically the whole village gathered in the central square. A select few were allowed on the stage with the Hokage, including the Lord Third, who was to enter wearing the traditional garb and ceremonially transfer it to Minato. Kannin saw the elders of the village on stage as well, Koharu, Danzo, and the rest; they sat behind the Hokage, in the their best dress, overseeing the whole operation. Kakashi and Kushina also got to be on the stage, standing off to the side.

Hiruzen got up to make a brief speech before the proceedings:

"Shinobi and civilians gathered today--thank you for coming. You all know what you're here for," He smiled, looking around to some laughter, "If you don't mind, though, I'd like to share a brief story or two to set the mood. Back when I was a young one, and most of you weren't alive, I was but a lowly jonin class shinobi, one of the first graduates of our academy here. As a disciple of our Lord Second, I followed him into battle in our First War. We found ourselves surrounded by enemy ninja, and we debated for a while about who needed to sacrifice themselves..."

He went on to describe the events that led to the death of the Second Hokage in the first war, how he was given the position of Hokage by Tobirama.

"...Never yet has the position of Hokage been transferred by resignation, in a time of relative peace. I hope that this sort of beginning can serve as a good omen for the rest of Minato's tenure. Let me just say that I am proud to give this position to a man so very much like the one who gave it to me."

He retreated from the podium and beckoned Minato to come forward. Minato obliged and shook Hiruzen's hand. Hiruzen proceeded to ceremonially remove his cloak and hand it to Minato, who put it on. Once the crowd died down, he did the same with the Kage hood, and before putting it on, Minato took a moment to look at the storied hood, worn by the greatest shinobi of Konoha in generations past, and finally placed it on his own head.
