By the time Shin reached their position, it was a wasteland. The Hachibi had almost completely annihilated a square mile of territory, but what surprised her was that it wasn't moving. She saw, wrapping around its form, six chains, which were pulling it to the ground, while two small figures were pummeling it with Fire release and punches which, though so far away, made audible claps in Shin's ears. It was her team, and they were handling the 8 Tails on their own.
What she didn't know, however, was that it had not gone as well as it looked. The first thing B did was launch a series of massive Tailed Beast Balls at them, which they barely managed to avoid. With that, Kannin knew that his sole duty would be to restrain it with his chains, so that it couldn't contort its neck far enough to launch more. The rest of the work would be up to Tetsu and Warai, who hopefully could knock B out of Tailed Beast Mode somehow.
Thankfully, with all 6 chains embedded in the real body of the 8 tails, its vitality was draining fast, and Kannin's chakra was overflowing. Even though he couldn't move, lest the Hachibi get a TBB off, he felt like he could move mountains.
With the Hachibi's chakra dwindling, Shin saw Warai and Tetsu punch it in the head at the same time, which apparently was enough to knock B out of his form. With a puff of smoke, a badly battered B sat on the ground, bruised and bleeding. But before Warai could finish him off, a streak of purplish light knocked her and Tetsu away.
Standing in front of B and Team 4 was another Kumo nin, older than B, covered in purple-lightning chakra. Shin went into lightning chakra mode herself and caught Warai and Tetsu before facing this enemy, one she knew quite well.
Looking at who Kannin recognized as the Raikage's son, A, he glanced across at Shin, who had just shown up, staring daggers into the future Fourth Raikage. Kannin had never seen that face appear on his sensei--it wasn't contempt, it wasn't hatred--it was something more than that. Her eyes were bloodshot and her hands were clenched tight.
Just before Shin was going to lunge at him, he said, "If you allow me to take my brother back alive, I will allow you to take yours back as well."
Shin's eyes widened and the chakra pressure coming off of her increased tenfold
"It's a better deal than you got last time, Harakaze Shin..." A spoke, solemnly.
She was almost convinced to disregard his offer, but the sound of Warai coughing behind her snaped her out of it. She lowered her head and said,
"Fine," looking back up at A, she continued, "next time we meet, I'm killing you."
"I'd like to see you try."
Without breaking eye contact, they both retreated and grabbed hold of their respective wounded. Shin carried Warai and Kannin carried Tetsu, which he felt was unfair, though Shin did only have one arm.
Shin was silent for a very long time, and Kannin could tell she was mulling over what A had said before, he himself was wondering what A meant by 'last time.' He thought about asking, but the look on her face made him decide otherwise. Another few minutes of silence passed before Kannin heard Shin ask,
"Did you three really take out B by yourselves?"
"...I guess we did..." Kannin said, the meaning seemingly setting in as he said it.
Kannin was too in too much mortal danger before to really think about it, but yeah, they took B down. Kannin knew he was strong--he knew they were all strong, but B was a monster--in more ways than one. He was one of Kumo's power trio, and hundreds of powerful chunin and jonin had died at his hands; but he and his teammates had fended him off--in fact, had A not intervened, they could've killed him. The next thing he heard was
"How."
"Well," Kannin began, "aside from the life-saving and unbelievably well-timed intervention of Tetsu and Warai, a lot of it came down to that technique we found in Uzushiogakure. The scroll said it sapped chakra, but it almost seems like it was designed to counter tailed beasts; it weakens them, drains their vitality and chakra, and if you do it right you can keep them from moving."
"Why have I never seen you use them before?" Shin asked
"The only other times I used them before was Madoromi Pass and Kannabi Bridge. I try to keep them to myself in case of emergencies."
Shin nodded, realizing that she didn't remember the tail end of the Kannabi Bridge disaster herself.
'What monsters.' She thought to herself, 'I thought Hiruzen was joking back then, but I really need to look at what I'm feeding them.'
After they gave Tetsu and Warai to the medical tent, they went to the war room to discuss the events of the day. Shin tried to get Kannin to the medical tent too, but after absorbing so much of the Hachibi's chakra he had healed nearly back to full.
"Kumo sent a simultaneous assault on our flanks," Shin said to Orochimaru, "despite heavy losses, we managed to rebuff them back. We also know that Killer B will be out of commission for a while, though I can't say how long given how quick he heals. A might make some rash decisions."
Orochimaru was delighted at the intel, "Welll thenn...It seemmsss like we have an opportunity, no?"
In fact, Orochimaru was particularly impressed with the showing of Shin's brats. He had eyed the Uchiha before, since they always amused him, but the grey-haired boy seemed to make it out of the battle basically unscathed.
'Fascinating...' He thought, scanning the boy, seeing his tattered cloak and cracked armor, as well as the giant fox curled up at his feet, 'Very interesting...'
