As it turned out, the enemy team that was assigned to the same plant as Team 4 got trapped somewhere in the Forest of Death, and had been incapacitated for the hour, so they passed once more onto the 3rd and final stage of the exam: the contest.
The contest was really nothing more than a formality. Passing the first two tests was really the gauge of skill, the competition at the end would just weed out the last dozen or so genins, and allow for a nice spectacle. Each contestant would do 3 battles, and if they won at least 2 of them, they would become a chunin.
Kannin was very confident in himself for this portion of the exam. He had sparred against a chunin in Amegakure and won, albeit at a steep cost, so beating a bunch of genins shouldn't be too hard. All he was worried about was being paired against either his teammates or Kakashi. The fights between his teammates tended to go either way, with each member having a roughly 50% win percentage against the others, whereas Kakashi was unpredictable due to his intellect and skills. Other than that, Kannin expected it to be a walk in the park.
Kannin's first battle was against a Sunagakure shinobi whose trick was a jutsu that let him hide in the floor and attack you at random, so he just summoned a wave of water to dampen the earth and slow him down. That allowed him to track the sand-nin much easier and eventually defeat him.
Tetsu also fought a sand-nin and defeated him quickly. Warai actually lost her first match, which was against Kakashi, who used a series of clones and White Light Chakra Blades to defeat her. Shin, who was watching from one of the suites, was sad that her student lost, but understood why given it was against Sakumo's kid.
Kannin was up against one of the rain-nin he had escorted for his second match, the dual wielding sword user Futatsu. His opponent unsheathed his swords, and Kannin unsheathed Koseki. He had never fought a dual wielder before, and was anxious to see how he fared.
Futatsu's kenjutsu was superior to his own, it turned out, but thankfully kenjutsu was his weakest tool so it wasn't the end of the world. After crossing blades a few times, he quickly sheathed Koseki and summoned two shadow clones. One would fight Futatsu with Koseki, one would launch wind release jutsu, and the other water release. Under the onslaught, Futatsu fell in 5 minutes.
Tetsu won his second bout as well, but had more trouble than in his first. He had to use earth release to uneven the playing field. Warai came back with a vengeance after her loss against Kakashi and embarrassed a Konoha-nin to the point where it was hard to watch. They felt really bad.
Kannin's final fight was, as luck would have it, against Kakashi. The boy with his lower face covered stared holes into Kannin during the countdown. Kannin was planning on using shadow clones again, but not the way he used them against the last opponent--Kakashi was too smart for that.
Kannin immediately split into 12 shadow clones and surrounded Kakashi, who used a mixture of his chakra blades and lightning release to destroy a number of them. But this allowed Kannin time to attack Kakashi with his real body. Flickering behind him, Koseki in hand, he slashed down, only for his opponent's body to turn into a stone. He felt a kunai pressed against his neck, when suddenly his body vanished in a puff of smoke!
'Dammit,' Kakashi thought, 'Another shadow clone.'
Just then, the area around Kakashi went dim as a torrent of water sprayed down from above him. As he ran to escape, the air around his feet began to swirl as Kannin summoned a whirlwind with wind release. This was a jutsu that Kannin had created over the past few months, he called it Rage of the Storm God, which trapped his enemy between a torrent of water above and a tornado below, which would mix together in the center creating a vicious storm.
But it wasn't enough. While impressive with its firepower, it took some time to prepare, and it required at least one shadow clone to assist. Kakashi knew a technique like this must require lots of focus and chakra, and quickly used Body Replacement and escaped, aiming for the real body outside.
'Man he really doesn't give up, does he?' Kannin thought.
One of his shadow clones threw four kunai, but the chakra sabre was too powerful and cut through them. Releasing Rage of the Storm God, Kannin returned to battle Kakashi, with a newly wetted battle ground. He used wind release to launch himself in the air, and again prepared a water release jutsu, when Kakashi's body vanished into nothing, surprising him thoroughly.
Just then a shadow came over Kannin as Kakashi attacked him from above, mid air. This was bad for Kannin. He didn't intend to get attacked up here. In fact, he was kind of checkmated, he didn't have many good ways of maneuvering mid-air, unless he wanted to reveal his adamantine chains, which he didn't. He had already won twice, so taking the loss here wouldn't keep him from getting promoted, so he decided to forfeit just as Kakashi's chakra sabre was reaching his throat
"I forfeit."
Everyone in the audience gasped from the anticipation, this had been the most exciting match so far, and the way Kakashi outplayed an opponent with such powerful jutsus and far more chakra was truly impressive, both to the onlookers and to Kannin.
Kannin landed on the ground pretty hard, but got up and offered his congratulations to Kakashi for not only defeating him but also for becoming a chunin at such a young age.
"Thanks."
