With Shin and the mystery woman locked in a stand off, Kannin realized that he was the unbalancing force. He would make the difference in this fight. A scheme was forming in his head, but it would take a while to complete. First, he needed to wake his friends up.
"Release them!" He shouted at the woman
"No"
Plan 1 failed. Onto plan 2. Kannin remembered how Shin told him that beneath much of the rubble, there were aquifers and running water, and his hope was that he could utilize that to strengthen his water release jutsu.
He began weaving hand signs and shouted "Water Release: Gunshot!" Letting out a large blast of water from his mouth, it rocketed towards the missing-nin, who leaped forward to avoid it. When Shin heard Kannin shout, she immediately threw three kunai at her, hoping to catch her as she escaped the water blast, but the missing-nin threw her own, and they met mid-air, clanging to the ground.
Shin wanted to bait out some more of this shinobi's abilities before committing to a plan of action, but Kannin's interjection forced her hand a little. Weaving a few hand signs, she shouted "Lightning Strike" When she did, a crack of thunder resounded and a white-hot flash of lightning snakes its way from Shin's hand to the missing-nin's head, who promptly turned into a brick with a poof of smoke.
'Damn, Body Replacement'
She looked around to find where she went, when she heard Kannin inhale sharply behind her. She turned around to see the missing-nin with a kunai to his throat.
"Now I wouldn't make any sudden moves, Konoha shinobi. Or else the little one here might get shaved a little too close."
Shin froze seeing Kannin in her grasp and lowered her hands.
"Let him go. He's just a kid."
"Oh shut up! Knowing you Konoha folks he probably already blood on his hands!"
A few tense seconds passed while Shin was formulating a plan in her mind, when all of a sudden Kannin poofed into smoke.
"A Shadow Clone?"
"A Shadow Clone?"
Both woman said at once. But before the surprise could wear off, the real Kannin swiped at the missing-nin from behind with Koseki. Kannin had never actually attacked someone with a sword, and his arm strength wasn't properly attuned to kenjutsu yet so the slash didn't go as deep as he hoped. It ripped through her clothes and left a deep gash on her back, and red blood began seeping down her spine.
"SON OF A BITCH!" She shouted before grabbing Kannin by the scruff of the neck and launching him back to the ground, Koseki clattering to the floor beside him. But despite the pain, Kannin had a smirk on his face.
Shin saw the opportunity before her and rushed at the missing-nin, kunai in hand. The mystery woman leapt back, put her hands together and shouted "Genjutsu: Alike to Night!"
Suddenly, despite the sun blazing from directly overhead, a darkness crept around them, beginning from behind the missing-nin's back. As the shadows were coalescing, Kannin, leaning on Koseki, limped over to Warai and Tetsu to see if they would wake up now that the missing-nin was injured. And indeed they were. Warai was stirring and Tetsu was already getting himself up. By the time both of them were fully conscious, darkness had enveloped them.
When Warai looked beyond Kannin's shoulder, her eyes went wide. Kannin looked back and saw their sensei covered in shallow gashes and bruised on her cheek. It seems the enemy's genjutsu allowed her to lurk in the darkness and emerge at random, giving her the element of surprise, and letting her land a number of strikes on Shin.
Warai looked back at Kannin to realize he didn't look so good either. His eyes were still a little glazed over, and he was covered in dirt and bruises from getting launched, and a small nick was on his neck, which was dripping blood down to his sternum.
"Is this some sort of nightmare?"
Kannin helped her up, and sighed, "No. We're under attack from an unknown missing-nin. Looked like she was originally from Kumo"
Seeing her friend and sensei so battered sharpened her resolve. She hardened her glare and grabbed a kunai. "What do we do?"
Tetsu had walked over by this point and interrupted, "We need to dispel whatever genjutsu is trapping us."
"Agreed"
"Agreed"
They gathered together, Tetsu began weaving hand signs, and Warai put three kunai in each hand. This was her first life-or-death battle, and she intended to come out of it alive.
What she didn't realize was, that to Kannin and Tetsu's eyes, hers had changed. Their normal black color had softened to a deep red, and it began spinning. Within each iris, a single tomoe appeared, whirling around her pupils.
In a hushed tone, Tetsu asked, "Warai, what's going on with your eyes?"
As Tetsu asked, it seemed like Warai had finally realized it herself. An almost creepy smile snaked across her face, and she replied "It means that this missing-nin has her days numbered."
'The Sharingan...' Kannin muttered.
One of his bigger regrets in this life was not being born an Uchiha. The Sharingan in its normal state was already a great boon to a shinobi, allowing them brief precognition of their enemy's movement. But at the higher stages, it could cast near inescapable genjutsu, and even reverse genjutsu. And that's not even mentioning what the Mangekyo was capable of...
Kannin resolved himself and returned the present. Sheathing Koseki for the moment, the three of them ran towards their sensei to support her, all three weaving hand signs along the way.
