Chapter 20 - Gald's family background

I leave the two in their moment of happiness and climb the stairs, arrive on the second floor and head to my room.

"Well, it's time to know where they are." I put the map on the desk by the window and open it. 'Maduville, Maduville ahhh here it is, I'm south of the duke' town… well, it could be worse.' I ended up not teleporting that far, so I guess the others didn't get that far either.

"I just have to take the little road that joins the 'Road back', this road that connects the capital of the kingdom to the city of Loford, where duke Ulric resides." It should be a safe route, unless something happens.

'It's a long way though... I'll have to ask Gald how long it takes to reach Loford.' All right now I know where to go, but I have to equip myself a minimum. First of all I need a sword, armor, preferably full but I don't think I have the time to afford it, at least a bag and some potions.

"Thinking of other things... I managed to get to the 6th degree of power, strong... even if I don't feel anything as an improvement, in fact I'm very empty, it's normal after all I used all my Astra in that fight, but in theory at least a small part must be returned." Maybe I have slow charging? I will see it later.

*Knocks* *Knocks* Someone is knocking on my door. "Please."

"Excuse me." The one who came to see me was none other than Gald. "Darion, can I take some of your time?" He has a dark face on his face.

"Sure, sit down." I give him the chair I was sitting in and sit on the bed. "He looks serious." I tell him, looking into his eyes.

"You're right, do you remember that this morning I mentioned that speech to you? The one that made me make that decision about Jusy." I nod, remembering that I told him that if he wanted to talk about it he could do it whenever he wanted. "After seeing what you did for Jusy, I decided to share our family's past with you." Well, I have to admit I'm at least a little curious as to what made Gald this way.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

He begins to tell me that tavern keeper wasn't his first job, but to my surprise, he too had been an adventurer, just not in the guild here in Maduville, but in another town. His class was a thief, his job in the group was to reveal traps or ambushes in the places they explored. And in combat he assisted in melee, hitting enemies in their blind spots, sometimes landing final blows.

But that was only the bright side of Gald, as he revealed to me that he was not only an adventurer but also an assassin on behalf of clients. After all he came from a poor family and always envied the upper echelons of society, especially the nobles, always looking at them from the darker side of the big city alleyways, with their flamboyant clothes and well decorated carriages of the highest quality.

So he always wanted more, and for that he would have killed anyone if the pay was substantial...including innocent people. But one day everything changed, on a mission with his group of adventurers, he found himself abandoned by them when they discovered the dark side of his life, and then set a trap in a forest. It happens to be the same forest that is near Maduville, he didn't blame them, after all they were adventurers with a certain sense of justice, and he accepted his fate.

But that forest would not have been his end, indeed, that day would have been his new beginning. By chance a woman passed by, she found him dying, she treated him immediately. That woman would have been Jusy's future grandmother, just like her granddaughter she was also a priestess, but she was born and raised in a small church.

Gald thanked that woman, who introduced herself as Stasy. Gald explained to him what had happened, he himself didn't blame his comrades for what they had done, it was the minimum to repay the crimes he had committed out of sheer greed. But Stasy corrected him, and told him that his death would not give peace to the souls of his victims, the only way to remedy these errors was to continue living by expiating his sins by doing good to the people around him. And not only that, but she took it upon herself to supervise Gald as he attempted to do these good deeds.

And so over time, that they spent a lot together, they got closer and closer, until they fell in love. Gald with the money that he had accumulated during his life, opened the inn and together with Stasy began to work in their house. After a few years the two had a daughter, Sylda, their family expanded and for Gald that seemed like a dream, he couldn't believe he was living a life full of happiness like in that moment, but unfortunately happiness doesn't last forever .

The family that ruled Maduville, which still rules today, discovered Gald's past as an adventurer, he is also that of an assassin. So they contacted him to frame him for an assassination mission, the target being a child from a noble family that the Laten hated. He immediately refused, he didn't want to go back to his past as a murderer, not now that he had a difficult life, but alas, the nobles don't like a refusal for an answer, especially the Laten, and in a barbaric act they sent someone to kill his family . Gald fought to the bitter end against his attackers, but their number was too great, and Stasy with a desperate act, expelled all his Astra of light, eliminating the assassins.

Gald was devastated and wanted revenge on the Laten, but a dying Stasy told him that he should not think about revenge, because he must focus his time and resources on his daughter and protect her. Gald promised her, and with that promise Stasy walked away with a smile.

The Latens lost interest in Gald and his family, so with his daughter she was able to continue to lead a quiet life. Years passed and Sylda became fascinated with the work of adventurers, so she joined the guild. Gald wanted to somehow persuade her, but there was no way to do it, so Sylda began her career as an adventuress.

But sadly once again the Laten has targeted Gald's family, but this time for a different reason. The Marquis's son has targeted Sylda, the latter ultimately being a beautiful woman. The Marquis's son wasn't exactly considered a good man, but he saw Sylda as a suitable wife to continue his line of succession, but he knew he couldn't take a commoner to wife, but it didn't matter if she became a concubine of he.

Gald was extremely enraged by this, tired of keeping silent, he decided to storm the Laten mansion and kill the son of the Marquis.

But it didn't go well, Gald was defeated, but not only that, he was also deprived of the ability to use Astra. Gald had been shocked by such a thing, never in his life had he heard that such a thing could be done, but the Latens knew a way to do it, a way that not even the king knew. Gald's life seemed over when her daughter appeared and stood between her marquis and her father, saying she would accept her fate as a concubine if they let Gald live in peace. The Marquis and his son accepted this request and Gald continued to live, but she could not believe that it was her daughter who saved him, while she could do nothing. She thought several times of committing suicide, but remembering her wife's words, she didn't have the courage to do it, but from that day Gald would never see her daughter again.

After a few years, news reached him that his daughter had given birth and unfortunately died in childbirth, but managed to complete the birth. The poor man didn't even have the chance to see the deceased body of his daughter, the Latens didn't allow it. But after some time, the servants of the mansion knocked on the door of the inn, bringing with them a little girl, daughter of Sylda. The servants revealed to Gald that to the Laten this child was useless and decided to return her to her only family member, Gald.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This is the summary of my past and that of my family." I could see Gald's teary eyes tell this story, I was silent the whole time.
