Chapter 33 - Variable (3)

The forest was quiet. Unnaturally quiet. It was as if every sound, every breath, and every movement had been swallowed by the dark mist that coiled through the trees. Tendrils of black, corrupted mana curled and drifted, twisting the undergrowth and withering leaves as it passed. The once vibrant woods now stood as a haunting landscape, alien and foreboding.

And within the depths of this corrupted forest, the students unknowingly ventured toward their doom.

...

Marin, Gregor, and Lina moved through the forest, their nerves on edge as the dark mist wrapped around them. Marin's fingers crackled with embers, casting a faint glow that barely held back the encroaching shadows. Gregor held his sword at the ready, his muscles tense, while Lina scanned their surroundings, an arrow nocked in her bow.

A low growl rumbled through the trees, causing all three to freeze. From the shadows, a monstrous figure stepped forward, towering over them. Its body was a hulking mass of sinewy muscle, cloaked in swirling black mist. Sickly green eyes locked onto them, brimming with a malevolent intelligence.

Without hesitation, Marin launched a torrent of flames toward the creature, engulfing it in fire. Gregor charged, swinging his sword with all his might, while Lina released a volley of arrows, each one aimed to cripple and distract.

As the flames died down, they saw it standing there, almost unscathed. The creature lunged forward, its speed a horrific contrast to its size. With a single swipe of its claws, it sent Gregor flying, crashing against a tree. Lina tried to dodge, rolling away, but the creature's gaze pinned her down with paralyzing fear.

Marin, in a desperate attempt, conjured a massive fireball, throwing all her energy into one final explosion. The blast echoed through the forest, sending waves of heat and light.

But when the smoke cleared, the creature remained, its green eyes glowing in the darkness. As it advanced, one last scream escaped the group, only to be silenced by the looming, suffocating mist.

...

Tarin, Oswin, and Edith made their way carefully, their minds set on the objectives of the tournament, though they couldn't shake the feeling of unease in the air. Tarin summoned a swirling barrier of water around them as a precaution. Oswin, sword in hand, scanned the area, while Edith, the healer, remained at the back, prepared to support.

The creature emerged with little warning, moving so quietly it was upon them before they could react. Tarin's water barrier held for only a moment before shattering under the force of its attack. Oswin stepped forward, his sword glowing with high-tech enhancements as he struck, each blow precise, aiming to cut through the creature's thick hide.

The beast dodged and retaliated, slamming Oswin with enough force to send him sprawling. Edith, seeing her friends in danger, cast a paralysis spell, hoping to buy them time. For a brief second, the creature stilled, its body jerking under the magical influence.

Tarin and Oswin seized the opportunity, launching attacks from either side. But the creature's resistance was terrifying; it broke free of the spell and lashed out, catching Edith in its grasp. Oswin tried to intervene, but a single swipe from the creature ended his struggle. In seconds, silence fell, leaving only the dark mist swirling around the remains of Group Delta.

…..

Ryla, Marek, and Sina were cautiously optimistic, having successfully completed a few objectives already. But as they moved deeper into the forest, the oppressive atmosphere grew thicker, darker, and the feeling of being hunted began to gnaw at them.

When the creature finally revealed itself, Ryla acted fast, casting a vortex of wind around it, hoping to trap it in a whirlwind of sharp air currents. Marek, a powerful brawler, lunged forward, his fists glowing with mana-enhanced strength, ready to land a decisive blow.

But the creature was unnervingly fast. It sidestepped Marek's attack, evading each punch with a terrifying ease, then struck back with claws that sliced through Ryla's defenses like they were paper. She stumbled, feeling the edges of her wound pulse with dark energy as the mist seeped in.

Sina, ever the strategist, set traps around their position, creating a grid of runic barriers. As the creature stepped onto one, the trap activated, chaining it in place with binds of energy. For a moment, it seemed they might have immobilized it.

But the creature let out a deafening roar, shattering the chains. In a swift, brutal motion, it struck Ryla down, then Marek, leaving Sina to witness her team fall before the creature descended on her as well, ending Group Epsilon's fight.

…..

Niven, Kara, Falon, and Jessyn moved with more caution than the others, aware of the increasing dangers in the forest. They'd heard distant screams and caught glimpses of fallen students. Jessyn, a tactical illusionist, cast duplicates of their group to create confusion, hoping to mislead anything lurking in the shadows.

But when the creature appeared, it seemed almost amused by the illusions. Its green eyes scanned each clone, as if able to sense the real from the fake. Niven tried to raise a wall of earth between them, hoping to slow it down, while Kara released a volley of enchanted arrows, each one tipped with magic aimed to pierce.

Falon charged, his spear crackling with lightning, driving it toward the creature's heart. But the creature dodged effortlessly, closing the distance and striking with devastating precision.

Seeing no other option, Jessyn activated her last trap—a powerful light spell meant to disorient. The creature staggered back for a brief moment, and the group thought they might have a chance. But their relief was short-lived. With an explosive pulse of dark energy, the creature shattered their defenses and tore through them with unrelenting ferocity, leaving nothing but silence in its wake.

…..

As the last echoes of the battles faded, the forest grew still once more, but it was a sinister, unnatural stillness. The dark mist crept further, spreading like a cancer across the trees and soil, leaving patches of decay in its path. The corrupted forest had claimed yet another set of lives, and the creature moved onward, unchallenged and unstoppable.

From afar, in the shadows, an unseen presence watched the devastation unfold, as if feeding off the fear and despair left in the creature's wake. The forest was now a place of death and silence, a twisted shadow of its former self.
