Harry returned home at midnight. Susan was fast asleep in bed. Harry sat on the edge of the bed watching Susan's pretty face sleeping facing him. Harry was slightly moved to kiss Susan's forehead and then said, "Good night."
Harry also brushed aside the hair that was slightly covering Susan's face. There was a great sense of guilt, but the feelings in his heart couldn't be changed. He wanted Louisa, not another woman.
Harry got up from the bed, to change clothes and sleep. As Harry's footsteps faded away, Susan opened her eyes, her lips pursed to hold back a heartful cry. Her love for Harry was unrequited.
It was very difficult to accept a reality that was not as she had imagined. She thought that accepting the offer as a surrogate bride was the right thing because she was sure that Harry loved her.
