Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: KHK CONSULTATION OFFICE

In one of the busy streets of New Kyoto, Kenji could be seen sprinting down the pavement with a worried expression on his face. He was late for work, as the issue he had to tackle this morning took more time than expected. How would he face the boss when he got to the consultation office?

"This is bad, this is bad, this is really bad," Kenji muttered as he moved hastily, narrowly avoiding bumping into a group of strangers.

The sword on Kenji's side swayed as he continued to run. Kenji's silhouette flashed by a handmade wooden sign that read "NEW KYOTO'S NO 1 APPARITION CONSULTATION OFFICE UP AHEAD."

Kenji continued to run and showed no signs of slowing down. A smile appeared on his face when he saw a certain building.

It was a fairly tall building, and if it were any taller, it could be considered a small skyscraper. The consultation office was located on the fourth floor. Kenji didn't take the elevator because he felt there was no point; he was already late, and taking the elevator would only waste time. Plus, why not continue running since he was already in the mood?

Since Kenji had a lot of stamina, the running didn't actually bother him too much. He could even go another lap.

Kenji arrived at a door with a metal plate engraving on it that read "KHK CONSULTATION OFFICE." He took a deep breath, pulled the doorknob, and a short woman came out.

"Thanks for working with us. I promise we'll do our best," Hitoshi's voice rang out from inside the office.

"You better make good on all those promises of yours. If not, I'm never contracting this office ever again," the short lady frowned slightly, seeing Hitoshi's wild grin.

"No worries, madam. You can always count on us," Hitoshi waved as the lady left.

Kenji, who saw this, could only bow slightly at the old lady's disappearing figure before turning and entering the office.

"I'm really sorry I'm late. I had somethi-"

"Kenji, you're here! That's great. We just got a new job, and the pay is great. We'll leave as soon as you're ready," Hitoshi said, interrupting Kenji's apology.

"Wait, what? We really got a job?" Kenji said, stunned.

"Why are you surprised?" Hitoshi said as he tried to move a box filled with stacks of paper.

"Well, kind of. The thing is, you don't get jobs that often," Kenji said as he rubbed the back of his head.

"Yeah, now that you know, don't just stand there. Come and help me move," Hitoshi said as he tried to carry a much larger box, but with no avail.

"Oh, sorry," Kenji moved to where Hitoshi was and helped him lift the box with little effort.

"Ehe, what monstrous strength," Hitoshi sighed enviously.

Though Hitoshi was taller than Kenji by a few centimeters, Kenji had some well-defined muscles even though he wasn't bulky, compared to Hitoshi who was mostly skinny.

"So, where is the boss? I haven't seen him since I got here. Don't tell me he's letting us do this on our own," Kenji said as he looked around the office.

"The boss hasn't come yet," Hitoshi said nonchalantly.

"Okay, so when did he-"

"The boss doesn't know yet."

"..."

"Don't look at me like that. It's not like I didn't try calling him. It's not my fault his phone was switched off," Hitoshi shifted his gaze away from Kenji, who was staring at him strangely.

Hitoshi opened a big shelf where various weapons were kept, from long katanas to spears, bows, and arrows. Hitoshi searched inside until he found what he was looking for. He retrieved an oddly shaped dagger from the shelf, unsheathed the shining blade with sharp edges and three holes in the middle before nodding slightly.

Hitoshi put the dagger back in its sheath and hung it by his side. He grabbed the key from the table and quickly walked towards the door.

"Are you coming or not?" Hitoshi asked as he opened the door.

Hitoshi's question seemed to pull Kenji out of his trance as he hurriedly followed behind him.

Outside, Kenji jogged so he could catch up with Hitoshi, who was walking quickly.

"Are you sure about this?" Kenji asked, worried.

"Sure about what?" Hitoshi replied as they continued to walk.

"Taking a job without the boss's approval. I don't know, but isn't that a bit risky since, you know, we are still minors after all?"

At this moment, Hitoshi stopped and turned towards Kenji.

"Remember how the boss said we're never going to get stronger if we only operate in our comfort zone?"

"Uhm, I don't really remember," Kenji said, scratching the back of his head.

"Well, he did say that, and it probably means he doesn't want us depending on him all the time."

Kenji lowered his head as he was in deep consideration. Hitoshi saw this and frowned slightly.

"Come on, don't you want to at least surprise the boss? Just think of this as helping the business out," Hitoshi said, finally pulling Kenji out of his dilemma.

"It's okay, I guess," Kenji muttered.

"That's the spirit!" Hitoshi patted Kenji on the shoulders.

After this, Hitoshi continued to walk, and Kenji followed closely behind him.

"You know, the boss always said with your talents, it wouldn't take long before you get to his level and eventually surpass him."

"Really?"

"No!"
