Chapter 49 - marriage proposal ambush

After listening to his aunt's words, Jiang Yun learned that the Wen family had already fallen to the point where they couldn't even afford servants anymore. However, he could also sense that the Wen family members were still quite friendly. If his mother could live with the Wen family, it wouldn't be bad. Therefore, Jiang Yun felt it necessary to help with the troubles of the Wen family, especially since he would be living there in the future.

Wen family now had a son, who happened to be Jiang Yun's cousin named Wen Quan. He had a childhood sweetheart named Xiao Hui. Originally, the two of them were going to marry each other, but unexpectedly, the girl's parents decided to have their daughter become a concubine for another man due to financial reasons.

When the Wen family was still prosperous, the girl's family had always treated Wen Quan with respect. However, as the Wen family declined, they began to mock and taunt Wen Quan, revealing their true intentions.

Upon learning that the girl was being given away as a concubine, Wen Quan pleaded desperately, but the girl's family ignored him completely. Today was the day when the man was supposed to propose to the girl's family, and Wen Quan had no choice but to go there to stop it.

Jiang Yun asked for the girl's family address, informed his mother and aunt, and decided to see if he could help in any way. He left the Wen family and headed towards the destination.

After asking around on the way, he arrived at the location and saw Wen He trying to persuade a young man in his twenties, presumably his cousin Wen Quan.

Approaching, Jiang Yun saw Wen Quan standing at the gate with a swollen face, calling out the name "Xiao Hui," likely the name of his childhood sweetheart.

"Uncle, I came to see if I can help," Jiang Yun said as he approached Wen He.

"Why did you come? Didn't I tell you to wait at home?" With his mind preoccupied, Wen He wasn't in the mood to be polite with Jiang Yun. Wen Quan, with tears in his eyes, was focused on the gate and didn't even look at Jiang Yun.

Without answering, Jiang Yun instead loudly addressed Wen Quan, "Do you really want to marry Xiao Hui?"

Although Wen Quan didn't know who this sudden cousin was, he was taken aback by Jiang Yun's remarkable demeanor. Seeing that Jiang Yun asked, he nodded weakly and tried to speak through his tears.

"In that case, what's the use of crying at the gate? If you want to marry her, go inside and tell her," Jiang Yun said firmly, even admonishing his cousin, "Let me ask you, if she's willing to go with you, will you marry her?"

Both Wen He and Wen Quan were somewhat intimidated by Jiang Yun's forceful presence. Jiang Yun's words were resolute, and Wen Quan, feeling like he had found a lifeline, wiped his tears and said, "Of course, I will marry Xiao Hui. She's the one I love the most."

"That's good. When you go in later, if Xiao Hui agrees, take her and leave. Leave the rest to me," Jiang Yun said without a doubt.

Wen He initially wanted to object, but looking at Jiang Yun's calm and unwavering gaze, he felt a glimmer of hope and didn't stop Jiang Yun. He reminded him, "The other party is the son of a somewhat influential family in Wu'an City, be careful."

"Don't worry, Uncle. You go back first, I'll take my cousin to bring that girl out," Jiang Yun reassured with a smile, asking Wen He to go back and prepare.

Jiang Yun finished speaking and led Wen Quan into the girl's family's house. They quickly arrived at the main hall, and the door was open. At a glance, they saw a girl in her twenties, crying like Wen Quan. Seeing Wen Quan approaching, she slipped away from where she was standing and went to him, crying out, "Quan Ge..."

Wen Quan also held the girl's hand and said, "Xiao Hui, I'm sorry. It's all my fault."

Jiang Yun paid no attention to the people inside the main hall and spoke to Wen Quan, saying, "Do you remember what I said?"

Wen Quan realized and nodded, then asked Xiao Hui, "Xiao Hui, are you willing to marry me and come with me?"

Upon hearing this, Xiao Hui nodded and tears continued to flow, evoking a sense of sorrow in onlookers. Unfortunately, some people were indifferent. A middle-aged man stepped out and shouted, "Xiao Hui, come back to me. Isn't it enough that Master Wu personally came today?"

The person referred to as Master Wu lightly waved his folding fan, and a group of servants followed him out of the hall, looking down from above. "Xiao Hui, I genuinely care for you. As long as you come with me, I will definitely make you happy. That poor boy can't give you anything."

Xiao Hui held Wen Quan's hand and pleaded tearfully, "Master Wu, Quan Ge and I truly love each other. Please, grant us your blessings. You have such good conditions, surely you can find someone better than me. Please let us be."

Master Wu's expression darkened as he said, "Xiao Hui, I've said that I genuinely like you. As long as you agree to marry me, I will definitely take care of that poor boy for you. Otherwise..."

"Otherwise what? Love is a matter of mutual consent. Master Wu, isn't it? I advise you not to force it, or else..." Jiang Yun interjected here, snorting coldly, clearly indicating that there would be consequences for not taking the warning seriously.

"Who are you? Don't meddle in other people's affairs." Master Wu didn't expect someone to interfere so boldly, and even dared to threaten him openly. He didn't seem to value his own life.

"You two go ahead. Cousin, now that you're taking her away, you'll have to take responsibility for her for the rest of your life. Leave this to me," Jiang Yun said to Wen Quan and Xiao Hui.

After a moment of thought, Wen Quan slowly led Xiao Hui outside. He thanked Jiang Yun and advised him to take care of himself.

"Stop them. They can't leave. The person I, Wu Tiannan, want has yet to be taken away by anyone."

Master Wu angrily watched Wen Quan and Xiao Hui running towards the door and ordered his subordinates to block them.

Several of his subordinates rushed forward to intercept Wen Quan and Xiao Hui, but they had to pass by Jiang Yun. Jiang Yun warned, "Anyone who dares to pass here, don't blame me for not sparing my sword."

Master Wu's subordinates were not easily intimidated by Jiang Yun's words and still attempted to proceed, but they were met with Jiang Yun's swift action. With his sword still sheathed, he struck the fastest of them, causing them all to fall to the ground, screaming in pain.

Jiang Yun's movement was incredibly fast. Those who rushed forward only saw a blur before feeling intense pain in their knees, causing them to collapse and clutch their knees in agony.

"Without my permission today, no one can leave this place."

Jiang Yun spoke again, having learned from the previous encounter. His words made the subordinates hesitant to proceed. They turned to look at Master Wu. Master Wu's face turned an angry shade of blue. He hadn't expected such resistance.

"Adachi, break his legs for me." Master Wu ordered a stoic man behind him. Adachi's eyes bore a malevolent gaze as he glanced at Jiang Yun. He stepped forward without a word.

Adachi pushed off the ground and leapt towards Jiang Yun like a leopard. With a glint of cold light, a dagger appeared in his hand, aimed ruthlessly at Jiang Yun.

Sensing Adachi's danger, Jiang Yun carefully executed the Four Elephant Steps to evade his attack.
