One of the reasons why Zen despised the main character was because of the fact that Harold was a commener. Of course many things happened like his parent's death and the downfall of his family. They were the main reasons on why he became a villain, but another reason why he kept antagonizing Harold was because of his nobility complex....
Unlike his father, Zen viewed commeners as weak leeches who depend on nobles for protection.

He wasn't that impressive but his tenacity and preservation in the novel was quite admirable. If I can bring him to the good side maybe he will become a powerful ally instead of an annoying villain... Although the martial arts was the main reason on making him tougher than others, but still his tenacity to endure hardships was quite admirable as well.
