Chapter 1 - A strange specimen

Annabel sighed, this wasn't as easy as she thought, she got to rub it on the face of her colleagues but it didn't last long. It has been week probably a month since she started working on this thing but it still hasn't shown any sign of life.

Annabel sat on the chair and watched the specimen quietly, she suddenly recalled how she got herself into all this mess.

It was a faithful and boring day until,

"Dr Annabel Gabriel, Dr Lewis would like to see you in his office... immediately." The lady scoffed and walked away immediately after delivering her message.

"Huh? Dr Lewis sent for her?"

"Is it the department supervisor?"

"Probably not, even though it's the department supervisor maybe they want her to clean the floors."

"Hahaha, absolutely."

Annabel dismissed the mocking words of her colleagues. She had gotten used to it over the years. To her though, it wasn't their faults, it was just because for the entire three years she had worked in the research institute, she never got to work on an important specimen or take part in an important research. So to her colleagues she was considered useless and not skilled enough.

Annabel ran her fingers through her disheveled hair, before going into the Dr Lewis's office.

"You sent for me, Sir."

"Oh, Dr Gabriel. Come with me."

Dr Lewis stood up not bothering to spare her a glance, with his eyes glued on his tab, he quietly led her to a research room.

"I never even knew that this room existed in the institute." Annabel murmured internally with a slight frown on her face.

"Come in." Dr Lewis said and walked further into the room. Annabel sighed and followed after him.

A large ice cube sat at the middle of the room with a dark red cocoon inside.

"Wh, What is that?!" Annabel's eyes widened.

"We don't know yet, it was found in a frozen lake a few years ago."

"Is it alive?"

"No, it has has no sign of life."

"Does that mean it's not a living thing?"

"We don't know yet but we think it's an egg."

"Of what? Animal? Beast? Dinosaur? Dragon?"

"Like I said, we don't know. All we know is that the red cocoon inside of the ice is at least the size of an adult man."

"I still don't get why the department supervisor is telling me all this."

"We need you to continue the research, we got a pending and more important case. So we believe we can live this in your hands."

"Me?" Annabel asked but silently did a happy dance in her head.

"Yes."

"I'm I working alone?"

"Sadly but yes."

"Is there any lead on the specimen or any information I ought to know?"

Dr Lewis walked to the door, with his hand on the door knob, he turned his head and smiled at Annabel.

"Of course, they is."

"What is it, Sir."

"The ice can't break... nor melt." Dr Lewis said and quickly left the room.

"Huh? What? This assholes, no wonder they gave me a wonderful specimen to work on." Annabel stomped her feet and walked grumply to the ice cube but a smile soon graced her face, she touched the ice cube and ran her fingers through the edge letting her fingers absorb the coldness of the ice.

"Finally, something to rub on their faces." Annabel grinned evily.

"But, how should I do it when I can't even get to the cocoon?" Her grin disappeared and her forehead creased.

Her eyes flashed with intense emotions, the research had no lead but if her colleagues finds out that she was given something this important, they would probably die of jealousy.

"Hehehe, good."

**End of flash back**

Annabel stretched on the chair and clicked her tongue.

"Tsk, useless."

She stood up and walked towards the specimen, just like Dr Lewis said, the ice never melted or broke throughout the month no matter how much she tried.

"Hey, little eggie... Ahem, I mean large eggie." Annabel quickly corrected herself and added, "Please just give me a sign even though it's just one time."

She waited with pleading eyes before she kicked the ice cube in annoyance and anger.

"Aw aw aw!" Annabel held her feet and cried in pain, she nimbly walked to the table and picked up the laboratory iris scissors. Annabel walked to the ice cuboid and stabbed it with the iris scissors continuously.

"Ouch!"

Blood flowed from her finger when she mistakenly injured herself, the crimson red liquid flowed and painted the surface of the ice cuboid red.

Annabel's eye brow twitched, the pressure and energy emitting from the ice cuboid was slowly beginning to suffocate her.

"What, What's this? Is it a new discovery?" Annabel murmured and desperately gasped for air.

Her eyes rolled to the back of her head, the entire world seemed to be spinning in a circle.

She forcefully opened her eyes and stared intensely at the ice cuboid. Even in this state, it was proven that this crazy scientists didn't want to miss any reaction from the specimen.

"No,no. At this rate, I'll loose my consciousness." Annabel finally decided to look away, she crawled to the table and desperately tried to call for help.

Her eyelids turned heavy and her sight slowly darkened, she felt a strong pull slowly pulling her into the abyss.

"That thing is not an egg." Annabel murmured with the last bit of strength she had.

She saw a faint and vague figure standing beside the ice cuboid.

"Get away, get away from my specimen, it's mine, my discovery." Annabel muttered and desperately tried to keep her eyes open, her heavy eye lids quivering.
